Long Departed Southampton Hauliers (Part 1)

Buzzer:
Mappo is probably the only one on here who knows who drove this truck, it was taken on Mont Cenis and takes you back some, must be before 1983 as only tandem axle one of Squibby’s aka Transport Services Southampton. Remember Squibby doing International in 63 when I was a nipper still at school Buzzer.

That’s UOR 316T that was mine Nick’y Gate had it from new and then me i think the picture with the red trailer is Irun seen it before i think John Pike had it then on the post run to Madrid but not 100% sure

Buzzer…i have to apologise. The first pic you put on, for some reason i thought it was posted by Jimski.
Think i,ll ask for more tablets…lol

Hi Cluey, i,d be surprised if that was Irun mate, although those masts / pylons look similar
to those in Irun where they tipped the scrap, but rarely saw those multi axle Italian Fiats in Spain.
plus that small Fiat in the background looks to be just a runabout…so i reckon its in Italy somewhere.
I stand to be corrected though…

Jeeez Mappo, Pint Size (who’s birthday it is today) was getting so excited about the FIRST photo in Irun not the second one with the I-Ties in it! FFS, book a slot in the medico for some stronger ones…soon!

Dont worry too much Gazzer, i,ve got an appointment next week…plus as you know
i aint posted for ages, so gotta get my brain in gear…lol

Phil Dibden (RIP) drove several different motors for Squibby’s, Transport Services. Here are a selection. I’m not sure if this was his Merc, but he did drive one as I did many trips to Italy with him in the early eighties. I took lots of photos at the time, just got to find them and scan them!

Hello to all you Soton Drivers, past & present,I am Ray Smyth (Nickname,Amarillo), I worked for Robert Baillie of Portsmouth and Horndean,Early 1970 for 3 years. Last December I put a post on TrucknetUK,searching for any item regarding Robert Baillie,Fergie47
kindly sent me a reply, and a query was answered by MaggieD,Thank you both. Since then I have trawled through all 392 pages of this
thread, hoping to find some more info and possibly a decent picture of one of their Atkinson Borderers, the only thing I found was a
mention from “Old Trucker” on page 8,regarding he used to meet with some of Baillies drivers at Kidligton café,on their way to Wigan
depot or some northern fruit market. I have just one photo of a Baillies outfit,FPO 13C,an Atkinson/Gardner 150,on the A58 between
Bradford and Rochdale,en route to load for Heinz Soton from Heinz Kitt Green,Wigan,It was 1970 and the M62 was still being built.
I hope some of you have memories of Robert Baillies. Kind Regards Ray Smyth.

Hi Ray,
Hope you are well,I remember the yard at Horndean, and Paraffin Lill’s at Kidlington, also Sunday night in the Caernarvon Arms on the old A34,with Burnetts,Cobbs,Mainland Market Deliveries etc.A few years ago now !!
I wish I had some photo’s.
Regards
Richard

Not forgetting R A C Marsh and Windebanks, though not too sure when they started…
My only connection with Bailies is that i took my HGV test with them in 1971 which was at the time
paid for by employer Lucketts of Fareham…As you say Richard, a long time ago…

Hi Ray. I do have many memories of Robert Baillie and their drivers but that was back in the early 60’s. One driver that always comes to mind is Nick the foreman who always sported an earring and there wasn’t many of them around back then. Nick was a big fella so would leave an impression on people. I used to load with them and M.M.D at Camber Quay and Flathouse Quay, Portsmouth. I too also used Parraffin Annie’s at Kidlington (not Lill’s a slip of the tongue from Richard, sorry mate). This was a wooden cafe heated by about twenty parraffin stoves and thats how it got the name. It later burnt down and was replaced by a far superior brick building which was called Bob’s. Yes mate good memories of some very good days. Did a lot, learned a lot and worked bloody hard.
Regards, Nobby.
P.S.) All M.M.D. delivery notes started with the prefix JFC, which stood for Jersey Farmers Co_operation whom I was told financed the start up of M.M.D.

Hi all MMD have recently been getting some stick, they are now owned by Portsmouth City Council and since 2008 they have pumped 5 million into it to keep it going on the pretext that it keeps the fruit trade coming in there. I too did work from Flathouse quay mainly Jersey spuds, a scot was in charge when we did it in the early 80’s called Bob and he lives near bye to me on Sarisbury Hill on the A27. We either loaded flats and back loaded with fertilizer from Billingham for Dorchester Transport tipping in Petersfield also we had a high taughtliner and back loaded for Kammac Trucking wit empty coke cans for Southampton and occasionally Dorchester for Panda soft Drinks.
The best thing was it could get very busy at Flathouse Quay and you could wait for hours to load but Bob knew we were only 30 minutes away and used to ring when our stuff was coming off the boat, also the dockers were always on job and knock so get it done go home worked well.

Hello, Ray Smyth again,

Richard/MaggieD, I remember MMD,Pitters, and Windebanks in particular. If I had to do a night changeover at Oxford,it was
always on the original Oxford Services on the A34,until HGVs were banned from using it.

Tony/Mappo, Re your HGV test at Robert Baillie,The Instructor was probably Ray Golds (RIP).I started driving HGVs aged 21 in
1965,on the then little red licence. Early 1968 I did almost 2 years bus driving with Ribble Buses.Because of my time bus driving
I did not qualify for grandfather rights to an HGV licence,However,Robert Baillie give me a job, because you were allowed to
drive HGVs until it ran out,in my case October 1970. Early October I spent a day with Ray Golds in FordD800/single axle trailer
36 foot long, with the axle right at the back, next day off to Lancing, took the test and passed it.

Nobby/TIR Original,I had forgotten about Big Nick with the earring, only met him once. The Depot Manager/Foreman driver at
Wigan Depot,Jack McLoughlin(RIP) used to refer to Nick as a Diddycoy,
I think it is a slang name for a gypsy. Other than that, many memories, mostly good,Arriving at Liverpool Market at 4a.m. with a
full shoot of French cauliflowers, once the sheets were off it looked like a block of flats sat on a 40 footer. T.J.Poupart would
offer ten shillings lobbo if you went to him first,Nip round to J.V.Whites,and John would offer you a quid to do him first.

Dave/Fergie47,I forgot to mention on my email to you that the Wigan Depot Manager,Jack McLoughlin(RIP) was formerly
employed by Smith Of Maddiston, before coming to Robert Baillie,Based at Newton Le Willows depot, near Haydock.
Many tales of a six speed David Brown6 box,Finding another called silent seventh,or Aberdeen Booster,Hurtling down
Beattock or Shap(A6) doing 70 plus. Did it myself a few times,Stupid Boy

Kind Regards to you all, Ray Smyth. raysmyth@fsmail.net

Hi Nobby, your dead right that f88 of Squibbs was indeed on the Avon contract and at the time Kenny Batton had her, then Kenny left think he went to one of the channel ire-lands bed and breakfast i think,i then did a trip in her to italy then reload mineral water out of San Morits was supposed to pick up 22 pallets but that got altered to 44 pallets and the idea was to bring it back into Southampton and transship 22 pallets onto another motor, well on the way back down the mountain i had to adjust my brake six time because of brake fade, the poor old motor was struggling with all that weight on her and by the time i got to Macon she wasnt sounding to good, so rang Sqiubby and told him i thought she was about to drop a valve,Norma, Barrys wife answered the phone and told me nurse her back, but the inevitable happened just south of Paris, i left the company after that after 8yrs serivce, but the picture of TTR F88 must have been rebuilt and put in sqibbs new colours, hope your keeping well over there Nobby, take good care of yourself nipper

Went to school at Bartley with Barry Squibb he was a year younger than me, also the old man, both were into auto cross and Barry was very good at it with Jim fettling the motors all the time. Remember he used to change all the shells in an F88 every year as precaution against any thing going wrong, also did engine oil changes more than regular and asked him why, he replied oil is a lot cheaper than rebuilding an engine.
Kenny Batten’s name I also remember think he lived in Nomansland near Landford, when I was riding me bike near there parked up was an old round cabbed AEC in a layby and he drove that for Jim, this was early 60’s . They had a workshop at Bartley next to an old sawmill and when at school used to often see his trailers parked on the main road to Totton where they straightened out the road near the old radio mast and also the café there. Jim was into International well early, they also had a yard at one time on Hursley road, in the old Landrover place owned by Ken Piper, then also in Eastleigh they had a couple of adjoining units, Mappo will remember that. Norma was in the office think she was a tad older than Barry and there was another woman her name escapes me always had a ■■■ on the go think she did accounts someone will remember her name. Never thought when at school seeing those trailers I would end up doing the same job a few years later.

On another note does any one remember Terry Winter From Fritham, he had a 4 wheeled AEC flat sleeper cab with a box body that fitted on it, used to do antiques to Italy, later he bought a brand new F88 from Princes, colour was light blue. When no international the four wheeler had its box lifted and they did mining chock’s to the coal fields loading around the New Forest, that’s when we still had coal mines. Buzzer.
