Long Departed Southampton Hauliers (Part 1)

Blimey Maggie you’ve just brought back some good memories re Vicenza, when driving for my old mate Jim Squibb, i used to run down there every week loaded with circulation pumps which i loaded out of isles in Avonmouth,i used to love that run because once i was there i used to have half a day to have a wander around and sample some really good food and wine, then when i got the papers back just shoot a couple of km to unload, then reload just behind were i was tipping then one hit it back to le harve, the reload was large machines for weaving cloth and that meant a full strip out but the lads there were really good and put a over head crane on the sheet and drag it back then help me put the trailer back together, not many places in italy that would do that for you.remember one night arriving at the Vicenza pay-age, snowing like hell and jumped out of the cab to pay, payed up,went back to get in the cab and had locked myself out,so i lifted the cab which was an f88 but couldn’t reach far enough up through were the gear stick was to get the keys out of the steering lock,■■■■■■■■ now what am i going to do and by now looking like the abominable snow man and freezing, so dropped the cab and found a lump of 4x2 wood so tried to break the quarter light but it didn’t matter how hard i hit it just wouldn’t break, so in desperation went back to the pay-age and asked the guy in there if he had any keys that might fit my door as id locked myself out, which seemed to amuse him, so he came to the motor to see what he could do to help but no keys would fit, with that he pulled a tiny fruit knife out of his pocket, inserted it into the door and opened it with ease, i couldn’t believe it, anyway i offered him some lira but he wouldn’t take it bless him, after that i struck up a good friendship with him and had the pleasure of having a meal with his family,so i used to keep him topped up with johnny walker which he love,so there you go Maggie some good memories, i did that same run for two year. :sunglasses:

This is a picture of our old yard in Andersons Road, Southampton. That’s me being used as ballast on the back of the fork lift moving a 20ft container. Lorraines lorry park is on the right which took up several old transport yards Eurohaul included , today it has all been built on so no more trucks Buizzer.

Richard did you ever clear customs with wine tanks in the rail sidings in Suamer, I did it all the time it was far quicker than central routiers in Bordeaux and you had a head start back to the ferry as you were a goodly bit up the road, JD.

I’m led to believe there is a new Truck Stop in Southampton.

If you leave Dock Gate 20, over the bridge, left into the Ind. Est, left at the end.
By all accounts it’s all singing all dancing and new.
Openfield are applying to use it as their O Licence parking site. I daresay others will too.
Sounds like Lorraines with nobs on.
About time too!

Good morning everyone. A very sad day. I have just had a phone call from Terry Sparrows daughter. Terry passed away this morning. He deteriorated rapidly. No more pain mate. The funeral will be at Basingstoke Crematorium at a date to be advised.Regards Charlie.

Sorry to hear about Terry, condolences to the family,
Had some great times whilst working with him at STS
RIP Terry. John [Ginger]

Hi Ginger STS I notice this is your first post so welcome aboard, at least you get some memory jerkers on this thread. Very sad about Spadger but it comes to us all in the end.
Any ways how is life in France with you, by the way you still got that new forest pony you bought of the old man all those years ago. Put up a mug shot as we have not seen you since the time you attended the August bash at the Wheat Sheaf, cheers John Davies aka Buzzer.

Hi, yes there is a new truck stop in southampton. It is on the old gas site by dock gate 20, truck wash and a 24hr workshop.facebook.com/cartlandtruckstop/?fref=ts

Hi all. Ive just been to visit Pierre and Nicolle. (and cadged a free lunch). I told them the sad news about Spadger and they send condolences to his family. I hope those of you attending his cremation will pass on their regards. Ive also put in a PM to Gazzer asking for Ernestos details as they always ask after him. "Un vrai caracter". If any of you who used to use the Leopard Bar pass me a PM, Ill give their phone and address details, but obviously wont publish that on line. Pierre and Nicolle left the Leopard, and the flat above, a coupla years ago and now live in their house near the Tankerville bridge. They arent on line at all so any messages will have to be via phone or post. Theyre both in good health, and always ask after some of the older drivers. Peter is a bit rusty with his English now, as he doesnt use it so much, but I`m sure would welcome contact from any of the old Le Havre, Quai De Southampton, crowd.

This was on FB today. I was more interested in the registration number OAA932T, no doubt supplied by the Scania mob from Salisbury.
Was it owned by anyone local before this chap had it?

Gazzer that looks very much like a JSL trailer from stoke on Trent (Janerite Services Ltd) who we did the loads to Bosnia for in the early 90’s and its the right colour for them as well, don’t know if that helps at all, Buzzer.

Hi All
We nearly fell off page 1
Pat will be happy

Cheers
Rich
