Long Departed Southampton Hauliers (Part 1)

Hi Nick, I can only assume, like you that it was an early gen set.

Dieselcowboy:
No luck with that box on the side of the Molo skelly then? I can only presume it’s a generator for the fridge box?

I think that the Genny for the box is on the on the front of it. The box on the side is probably for the drivers sandwiches. Regards Charlie.

robthedog:
I didn’t realise SHB went across the water, do you go often ?

Gatt66:
One more… SHB, not departed but over 40 years old and currently 13000 vehicles, moves its own goods only 60 of its own on its transport fleet, hope these photo’s qualify on here.
Andy

Hi Rob, not to often but we are known to go over occasionally, only saw four other British registered trucks the whole trip, one of Williams Shipping in Belgium and three of the Harley Davidson road shows just across the Austrian border on there way to Milan.
Andy

gazzer:
Only recently I was talking to someone about SHB 4X4 Hire (as I remember them). They were on the TV for some reason and they hadn’t heard of them.
Did they start off in Hampshire? With just a couple of Land Rovers…

As for Spectre…not another 'Bond movie…yawn!

Hi Gazzer, yes they started at Salisbury Rd in Totton, it was the dads building business originally, South Hants Builders hence the SHB. The son then rented two of his Landrovers and it went from strength to strength. Andy

Gatt66:

Heres one of my dads old TK’s taken at Southamptons 1973 rag week procession

The ‘sepia’ look adds a bit of nolstaga, good pic.
We used to call Tony A1 Gatrell (rather than A I) seem to remember he was a top carpenter and did a couple of small office conversions using his skills (bit of a hooligan on a motorbike back in the day too  )

Wish we had taken more photo’s at the time, found a few more that I’ll try and get on soon, just need to scan them on. Yes he is a top carpenter and loves nothing more than working with wood and using his tools, he’s not such a hooligan now, a bit more sedate as he just shows his bikes at the steam engine rally’s in the summer, me and my brother took over the banner as hooligans on the bikes but even we’ve calmed down at our ages. Nice to know he’s remembered. Andy

acceptme:
Alrgith gatt66 is dennis still working for you guys? Married to a lady named julie?

Gatt66:
And another

Yes Denis is still working for us, and still married to Julie, opinion about everything and biggest pain I have… work ethic can’t be knocked though and be a sad day when he eventually retires. Andy

Hi Tony and hope you are well. Looked at the photo and that is most definitely my old mucker from Coventry, Peter Monger (R.I.P). Maybe the picture is a bit fuzzy but you could even tell by his unmistakable silhouette and definitely not Johnny Lee. Regards, Nobby.

TIR original…Hi Nobby, long time since we heard from you mate.
Hope you,re ok…looking at the photo again, I think you , Gerbil and MaggieD are right.
Who am I to argue with such experienced and knowledgable guys.
I must go to specsavers…hang on though, I,ve already been… Lol

Deesider:
Does anyone remember a firm called ‘Jameson’ or ‘Jameson Europa’ ?
I think they were based somewhere in the Southampton area.
They had those tilt trailers that were lifted on and off trains, and had the chamfered roof edges so that they would fit through the tunnels.
They did mainly Italy, I think.

Hi again Tony and I’m not doing too bad for an old’un. No you are right I haven’t posted for a very long time on this site although I do have a nose now and again to see if there is anything interesting. I have had a long spell of being not so good but I reckon I’m getting there now. The trouble is my interest goes back a little further than what most people are talking about so I don’t really join in. Do give my regards to your brother Kieth when you see him(now there’s some stories). By the way I believe you are recently retired and if so hope you are enjoying it.
Regards, Nobby.

Hi Nobby, glad to hear you’re better now mate.
Yes I have retired, but not officially until April…I,m not gonna miss driving
at all Nobby…the job has changed beyond all recognition now.
Oh I spoke with Keith and he sends his regards…he also wanted to remind you
of a 5 day customs strike in Porto, when the sales of Brandy Croft rocketed… Lol
Take it easy Nobby, good to talk again after so long…Tony.
