Long Departed Southampton Hauliers (Part 1)

Tonto lived in Lordswood. Not as posh as Chilworth!

what happened to scac then I ran out of poole for a while on scac work, the work and trailers were ok I just had a berliet to pull them with, not the best truck, but a fine cab to work in,

I think Norbert capitalised on the demise of SCAC and had a ready made launchpad into the UK.

Just thinking back to the old days when on for RH&D in Pompy pulling SCAC trailers, boy were they crap trailers with hardly any brakes minimal maintenance and then they thought it was a good idea to sheet waste paper with old tilt sheets which were very heavy and stiff as a board when cold, don’t know how we managed it. Then the weight went up in 1983 and no one with tri axle units to pull them, but then they got some tri axle’s trailers and things improved a bit. You could earn reasonable money if you got your ass in gear and we nearly always got paid on time which was a plus, Buzzer.

found these pics on the “Old Truck Accident Pics” thread (thanks to “neversweat1”), they are of a PM Combes truck based in Andover.

PM Combes were a timber merchant and also had a saw mill/machine shop in Toynbee Road Eastleigh from where they ran Ford D series artic and a Ford A series rigid (I know this as I did an apprentiship there in mid 70’s) They were then part of the Montague L Meyer Group which used to import timber and had a yard in the docks (I seem to remember it being close to Dock Gate 10) where several local Co’s. would haul timber and ready built crates (for Fords amongst others)
one Eastleigh based carrier was R Smith and Son who ran out of their farm in Stoneham Lane.

I think the main haulier had some motors in Meyer livery but who it was escapes me at present.

Colin

Hi Todd, I assume that you worked for Ridgers then.
The names mentioned that I remember ( though i possibly knew some of the others )
we’re Bob English and Chippy of course, and Brian Oliver if he was known as ’ Ollie ’
Is this him ■■?

I seem to recall that Alan of Claywood transport and someone else, might even have been
Trevor Mc Ness, were set up to do a trip to the Middle East but for some reason, didn,t
get further than Dover…so they continued doing Hocfun work ( Colin Wilkes ) doing Italy.

Dunno what happened there, all I did was a small edit, and it came up twice. :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

Tone did you know Alan from Claywood is Brian Paling’s brother in law, as well as that Merc they had a V8 Mandator remember seeing it in there yard with the engine sticking out the back of the cab. This was Edmund Geralds old place cream and maroon (remember them) Leyland comets was it ? now you gonna tell me your to young to remember. Buzzer.

Yeh I remember Edmund Gerald Buzzer at the bottom of Four Post hill, and also who Alan was.
I worked out of that yard when it was in the hands of Begard, that was run by Alan White
who later went to Skillbeech when they started, and Gavin ■■? or maybe the surname was Gavigan.
They used to do the Cape fruit and the yard was shared by Fred Croucher, my boss at the time
and Alan, the Mcnesses and I think Eddie Huntly.

Hi Mappo, I don’t remember Brian Oliver being known as Ollie, but I think he originally was an owner driver and he came from Manchester,I think he had a F10 which Princes converted into a twin steer and Ronnie Ridger bought it and I drove it on SCAC and RH&D work. regards Todd

I was miles out then…but thanks for clearing that up Todd.
