Regards Jimmer
Company still going today, started by Chris Collins and think his son runs it now. Local to me as think it originated in Swanwick lane as did Chivers boat transport, remember them. Run by Dave Chivers who sold out for his permits to the then called Chivers International or European cant remember which, they started with an F12 and I ended up in court with them for an over chilled load of peaches that was '77 when it took 4 or 5 hours to load as it was not on pallets in those days , all on the floor. Won the day in court plus interest so ended ok, Buzzer.
PS. could not find a pic of Chivers so you have this instead, funny though !
Lovely Turbostar Jim, nice job you made of that
An adr photo from another thread…Portsmouth reg. no. and I remember seeing the vehicle about.
Most of those TOE trailers used to come into Newhaven, we had to go there on occasions when working for SCAC usually when industrial action stopped Le Havre, the tuggy’s always used to drop the trailers to low and that was hard work when it was ■■■■■■■ down and blowing a hooly, Buzzer.
I used to pickup TOE unaccompanied from Newhaven when I used to do a bit of shunting for Ridgers Transport from Lymington in about 1978/9 iirc.

Ridgers was on SCAC with two trucks with us, we had three on for them PJK had two Roger Page one plus a couple of O/Ds, good old days when Pompy docks was all gravel yard now look at it. Had more on later when Southampton office moved there, and the ice cream man was in charge at the top, but that’s when they had filled in the coal dock at the top and expanded the park at the bottom, then they did it again and again till it’s what it is today, cheers Buzzer.
In the early 80s when the recession had started to take its toll I was Sykes Bulk Liquids/Shaws fuels and we had a few of the tanker lads pulling TOE trailers out of Newhaven and if recall they had set back king pins so only a few units wee able to couple up to them such as day cab DAFs and I think the Foden fleetmaster unit would as well, but I never did any myself
cheers Johnnie

Johnnie first job we did when we bought a second hand unit was to move the 5th wheel back, best to get a longer chassis or you feared it might rear up on you, Buzzer.

Getting the grey cells working here, incoming loads were allsorts, champaigne to builders boards/plywood but I think return loads were always steel, rolls from S.Wales or ingots/blocks from Sheffield.

We loaded thousands of tons of rod and coil bar from Robertsbridge near Sheffield, we had a stockpile of 3x3 timbers in our yard to save time to use as dunnage , else you had to go to a designated salvage yard to get it on SCAC’s account. This was after all the post and rail fencing for about a ten mile radius had been nicked for the job, we also loaded hundreds of Massey tractors from Coventry on flats but all that’s gone today Buzzer.
Thinking of Ridgers, aka R&R transport, Ronnie certainly had a good mix of units. First was a DAF 2800 from an owner driver Poole way I think, a RHD Berliet with a backwards gearchange, an ex Shipphams of Chichester MAN with the dreaded (and well worn) column change, a Scania 110 (nice one that), a LHD 2800 DAF and finally he bought a new Volvo F12 that was on Italy I think. As said I used to do holiday relief and evening trailer changes at Poole and Newhaven mostly. Like so many now long gone, I think he qualified as a Southampton Haulier back in the day.
Any names Mr.Jake from Rigglers transport?
Those of you wishing to look a little further…you might be mentioned here: baumaschinenbilder.de/forum/index.php

First one on the artics (Ridgers also had some ridgids) was Brian Warne, I had worked with him on UK bulk distance work about 10 years earlier, Eric Light (RIP) had taken early retirement from Esso when they ran their own tanker fleet, Barry ?, bit of a chancer who started out on his own after a short spell at Ridgers, Melvyn (I think McKenna or similar) from Romsey and Alan Taylor, who had recently passed his class 1, who had the F12 from new and was running to Italy in my time there. There were others whos names escape me at present, I think Melvins brother or brother in law was there at some point but I am now thinking back about 35 years.
Yep getting there MrJake: Melvyn(aka Hookey) had the Berliet (arf about teet gearbox)then the F12. Todd (his brother who is on here). Kevin (Handbag) Screech. Many others that need my brain jogged!..Alan■■?(Blue eyed boy!!)
baumaschinenbilder.de/forum/index.php I’ve got to page 60 on the VOLVO F series thread and WE (Southern Boys) don’t get a mention! Oh well, another night, another 60 pages!
Who was the Ridgers driver who used to park on the bridge over the M27 ( chilworth )just passed Rownhams services he had a Scania 111 or was it a 110 used to pull scac trailers, the fella lived in Chilworth was a nice chap when I was on for Bob Cartwright with the MACK we were both on scac
But I just can’t remember his name !!! We were both tipping big reals of paper somewhere in Luton
At the time I was drinking about 4litres of coke water anything really that was before lunch I had a thirst I couldn’t quench !
He said to me I should go to see a doctor which I did some time later when my weight dropped to below 10 stn Yep diabetes !!!

At times like this I realise just how bad the memory is, can picture the man but can’t bring a name to mind, in my time he drove the lhd DAF I think and when I did a weeks holiday cover for him he left all the extras (cool box + food, kettle etc) in the motor and said help yourself to anything, top bloke.
