Long Departed Southampton Hauliers (Part 1)

Hi all,

Im only a nipper but im sure my dad worked for SRT (who i`ve not seen a mention for) in Southampton (dock gate 4) back in the day?

Dad`s been gone donkeys but my older brother has told me stories of the past.

Hi again
A few more names have entered my head regarding Armstrong’s.
Tom Crutchley & Monty (went on to work for Boarhunt) and now I remember Dave Hooper and ‘Smudger’, John Smith
There was also a chap that lived in Lordshill/Lordswood. Quite tall with a beard.

They were good days for me but I never got taken on full time. I remember going in the yard one day and a F10 was parked up in the corner, (Tom Crutchley’s)
and I said to John Cooper, ‘Do I get taken on full time now?’ ‘No’ he said ‘It’s already been sold’
Same thing when Ted got the push.
I was peed off waiting so I never took their phone calls any more and started up my own burger van.
Who remembers (NOSMOKING’s) KNIGHT BURGER??
Started off parked up on Weston Shore opposite what used to be the lorry park (Top end)
Got myself established then we had the mother of all storms in, was it '89? I had to move from the shore and ended up
moving around a bit. Car park in Bridge Road, Woolston. Car park in Bitterne opposite what was Safeway.
I had a fair old few cb’ers that would follow me around as well. No doubt a few drivers from on here as well.
Lay by on Thomas Lewis Way just before M27. (Got prosecuted for ‘obstructing the highway’. More like the reason was the wheeltappers
used it as a pulling point for trucks and I was in the way!)
Sold the burger van and started my own transport. Nothing big but it paid the bills. WPS parcel contract and Wickes deliveries
(bought the 2 RTS vans from Richard Ebejer and changed the name of my company to RTS from T.O.P.S. Transport)
Also had a Hiab 7.5 tonner.

Had a few problems after that and worked around a bit, PJK, Kingswood, Stainer <<(another non entity! Caught up in their debacle in Spain that cost me £1k) Cahalin, Lamberts,
tipper work, and several I don’t care to remember.
Happy days, sort of, lol.
Heres a picture of me at Co-op delivering coal (That’s what buggered my back) Denny Belbin (Davies) was there at the same time as me.
Must be about 1971/72. Oh how time flies.
Back later ATB Richard (nosmo)

Hello Jimski
I haven’t seen Richard for a few years now. My last contact was to hire his car for a wedding for my daughters friend about 8 years ago.
He used his Merc iirc. (I’ll see if I can get a picture of it) He also had a Mk10 (I think) Jag. Lovely deep red jobbie like Morse’s, but in better nick!
He was last living in Hedge End behind The Fountain pub and was still working for BOC.
Nice bloke was Richard. Had his head screwed on, that’s for sure.
My first meeting with him was when I had my burger van. He would bring a Mustang or, something similar and burn the tyres out in the car park.
Didn’t do me any favours with the residents but I wasn’t going to tell him!

Hope this helps.
ATB Richard (nosmo)

Hi Nosmo it depends how long you go back with the yank he had, I think you’ll find it wasn’t a Mustang but a 68 Firebird
Convertible, he bought off my brother but that’s going back some :unamused: do you know Pete Green ■■

Regards Jimski

Oh yes! Pete was my neighbour 'til he upped sticks.
Pete had a lhd pink Cadillac with ‘Left ■■■■■■’ painted on the back.
It depicted a ■■■■■■ that he done hisself because as you know he was a signwriter.
(My wife still sees his ex, Pearl, in Bitterne occasionally)
I think one of his daughters emigrated to Oz about 5/6 years ago.
I knew I wasn’t correct about Richard’s car but I knew it was a yank. I didn’t really know him then.
There was a story going round then that some bloke upset him and he pulled him out of his sun roof and gave him a slapping. Sounds about right, lol.

Many moons ago now but I’m still in the same house, same road.

Hi John I remember Bert Stanard, Ron Griffiths at STS bought that yard off of him in Andes Road, a very long time ago. I also remember Jimmy Alford having a run in with one of his drivers in fact he (Jimmy) chased him into Berts yard in his car and promptly got hit over the head with a hammer by the driver!!!

Hi pat got the wrong road there must be an old age thing. regds.john
