Hi gazzap. been awhile since Ive seen you, your brother and Alfie, I met up with a few of the R&A boys last year at Bob Walkers funeral. Brady, Chippy, Richard and Angie, Gary from IOW, Gerbal, Whittler, Mow Baker and Steuart, had a gutful of driving in europe no larfs anymore and the fines are serious as Mr Moorman will tell you, spent xmas at mums in france waiting a week for a backload, no letter to say I was on holiday, the truck hadn;t moved, got stopped and held me to ransom for 4 days in Alencon for 4500 euro’s, FTL Paid now Fingers is trying to get me to pay! fat chance! off to oz for awhile I need the sun, give my regards to the boys,

While trucking in New Zealand a few years back came across this ferry that seemed familiar, can just about read the pride of cherbourg under the paint, not the original one the viking valiant that was first named pride of le havre then the pride of cherbourg???if my memorys correct?

Hi Scotia900 well spotted mate does it still carry freight ■■ Suppose it runs between the North and South Islands does it?
I bet a few driver remembers that old ship :unamused:

Regards Jimski

Young’s of Eastleigh

I,ve just had an E- mail from Fred Blair via Trucknet.
Who remembers Fred ■■?..He used to drive for Squibby ( do you remember him Dave…Fergie47 )and then later for
Colin Wilkes for Hocfun.
He,s been living in the States for 21 years in Illinois as an owner driver doing coast to coast.
I had,nt seen or heard of Fred for about 25 years. Small world innit. :sunglasses: :sunglasses:
Fred obviously looks in to have made contact.
The names he recalls are Bev Wyatt, John Lee, John Smith, Cluey, ( yes you Pete ) and Bingo ( sadly had to tell Fred of Bingo,s passing )
Anyone else on here know Fred.■■?

I think Cluey tried to find Fred when he was working for me in the states about ten year ago, heres a picture of Cluey and me in Alabama. I dont think Fred will recognise him now, At Sheppards do Terry Sparrow asked do you know Cluey? Cluey said, ‘I am Cluey!’

scotia900…Nice pic there mate.
I guess we all change with age aye, some for the better and others not. :unamused:
If your reading this Cluey i,ll ring you tomorrow with Freds E-mail address.

ps…Where are you Jimski ■■?

Hi. Just reading your post about long departed Southampton hauliers and AKT caught my eye from page 1.

Arthur Kneller well, what can I say! I worked for Arthur before he was AKT. It was Ashdown Transport 32 Queens Terrace (Opposite dock gate 4) I started in 1974, 3 day week to follow!!
He had about 4/5 Leyland Terriers then went and bought 2 Scania 111’s (I think) for continental work.
He also had an older left ■■■■■■ Ford D800 and an older ‘K’ reg Scammell unit. (Another heap of ■■■■■■ lol)
He had a couple of Leyland ‘threepenny bits’ as well NTR 23M and NTR 24M on the Embassy Freight Contract. He also ran the transport for the Heathrow depot of Embassy Freight.
My old Terrier was AOW 293K until I went to Embassy and drove a new Terrier (JCR 135L & 136L) and then a brand new Magirus Deutz (ORV975S)
The transport manager was George Holloway (When he wasn’t driving or doing the repairs and, what a mechanic, brilliant). Absolute smashing bloke. Been there and done it all believe me and no ■■■■■■■■! I think you must know him ‘ex — Middle East hand’ as you call him. Now sadly passed away in about 2002.

Arthur was a wheeler dealer and had no idea about transport but had a very good business head.
He bought the name Pentalver way back in the 70’s to use at a later date.

What with the BFC debacle it came in handy!
I went on to the Embassy Freight (Hazel Road Woolston) contract due to personal problems and stayed there ‘til 1978 when I left to do other things. The other driver there was Wilf Cripps. Smashing bloke and, the warehouse foreman was Howard Hartwell another great bloke.

I also worked for Kingswood just before they folded. I left convinced there was something not quite right having had to use my own credit card for diesel in France to get home. How right was I?
I was only there a few months so didn’t really know anyone. I did know a few faces because I worked for Robert Armstrong driving continental for 4 years on and off. What a great job that was.
Other companies around then was Ernie Smart, Cory’s, Itchen Transport (Meachers. I worked on Itchen Tpt for a while delivering bagged flour and then Meachers driving a van), SRT, Norman Offer, Boyes Conning were just starting then. They had an office in Oxford Street, bought a van and went on from there. I worked for them for a while when they were in Hazel Road, Woolston before I went onto artics. They were a good company but now sadly gone. Southampton Cold Storage (I think that’s what they were called) just by the side of the bowling green. Great crowd of drivers they were. I used to work part time in The Sun pub on the corner of the High Street and Platform Road (The wooden building). They would come in on a Sunday lunchtime. I’d go home at 3pm, come back at 7pm and they’d still be there on a lock in, lol. Jim Squibb, R & A, BKG, LTS, Cahalan (Colin) R & A Freight, Bloomin’ ‘eck, where have they all gone?

Anyway I thought I’d put my five eggs in. Great forum as well. If I think of anything else I’ll be in touch.
Regards Richard ATB

Ps. Do you remember Scaniaman the cb man in Woolston? He was a great friend of mine although a lot of people said he was rip off merchant. Certainly untrue in my book

Hi all. After Squibby had gone, Freddy Blair came and drove for R.K.Crisp. Bill Miles? was the manager, No bed in my yellow &white J6 so Fred made a welded bed for me to use on my truck.
Unfortunately it fell down over my back in Switzerland. The bed is now somewhere in Switzerland !!!

Andy Cabel (Drove a left ■■■■■■ F10) (Turned a tanker over on the Winchester bypass full of whisky)
Jerry/Gerry Pollard (Had a bad accident in the yard with a forklift. Lucky to save his leg)
Ray Routledge (Lived in Gretna Green. Original Armstrong Liverpool driver)
George Thorne (Lived in Bridport)
Tom ? (Can’t think of his surname. From Liverpool as well. Went cab crazy and sadly passed away because of it!)
Ted Harnett
Dave ? (Jumped up git went in the office later on)
Rob Jay (Done the tank wash (as did I for a while when he was on holiday etc) and stand by driver. Got on well with Rob)
John Cooper (Depot manager. Nice bloke, I got on ok with him)
Andy Cook in the office.
Jacqui in the office. (Went away with Paul sometimes ) Now living in Mallorca with Paul Buttle
All in all they were a great bunch of blokes and ladies, sorry Jacqui!

I done my first trip with them following Paul Buttle for a week. What a heads up that was!
