Long Departed Southampton Hauliers (Part 1)

Trev_H:
This thread reminds me of pre sat nav days when somebody would give you directions by pub names

Hi Trev,

When I was a lad I used to get directions from the Gailey roundabout to Cannock chase, not by any M&B Pubs

Regards
Richard

Hi John yes I can think of a few more 'M’s

The Malvern Winchester Road went to a Christmas do there a couple of years ago and who should I meet but Maury Macness and his wife they only live a short walk away. Also didn’t Lambert Bros have a yard or start up in the road behind?

Another prestige pub The Mountbatten next to Sainsbury’s in Lords Hill!!!

Another is The Mitre (formerly The Belmont Hotel) in Portswood we take dad there sometimes for a meal, also the late John Shaw only lived around the corner in Shaftsbury Avenue, his late wife Maggie worked there doing their accounts, and they let him park my unit behind the pub!

Regards Pat

Dint Freddy “The carrots” Sparks drive the 240? Or was it he had the F10 on Rawlings? Perhaps he felt inadequate and had to improvise for earnings?

Freddy had the F10 but sort of went over the top onto a trainline , I now the hill going down and a hard right hander, but my brain wont tell me where it was .
Ian Helly man did not stop after Freddy had the accident, he had to get to the Customs in Italy!!!

Hi Richard,

Hope you are keeping well, I seem to remember Fred’s accident being at Bellegarde, but it’s a few years ago now so not so sure.

Regards
Richard

Hi Rich

You’re right it was just before Bellegarde down a steep hill turn sharp right over a railway bridge (Fred didn’t) about 1k after that was the ‘Swiss routiers’ on the left, then after that was a hairpin left and a climb up to the ‘Monkey house’ also on the left.

regards to you and Ange

Update re Fred Sparks.I`m pretty sure he did not roll the F10.That was Stan Longs motor. What I found out today Fred is or was a director of Aldershot Town FC.He got remarried and now lives in a large house in Camberley. No wonder the Shots have gone into liquidation.Nothing implied there Fred! Regards Charlie

Over to you Pat for " N " pub as I cant think of one, cheers Buzzer.

The New Bridge Inn Woolston used to be called the Cliff I think

There was the Nags Head in the High Street

The Northumberland in the darkside of Southampton off Derby Road!!!

Finally the New Farm House Mount Pleasant Road I lived around the corner from this pub in Empress Road and have passed by it many many times especially when subbying for Sea Route Ferry!
