Myself and a few lads from Bevois Valley went to the old Hampton Park Hotel Swathling quite a few times in the late 70’s it used to be a real rough old boozer it later changed it’s name to The Old Black Cat and then it was closed because of all the trouble and later became a Mac Donald’s.

my time at Clapcotts contd.

towards the end of the 80’s the crude oil contract was gone as the oil was now being pumped by pipeline from the wells direct to a purpose built storage
centre and railway siding alongside the A31 at Holybourne. Another nail in the coffin was when Esso decided to put all it’s tanker work out to contract, this was to have a huge impact on both SWTD and Clapcotts. they decided to bid for the contract as a joint partnership but unfortunately lost out to Wincanton transport, who were running out of Nursling at the time. most of the drivers, including myself, were given our notice and I was lucky enough to get work with Wincanton, although Clapcotts had managed to secure some other work and wanted me to remain we parted company. They continued to have two trucks on the Sulphur contract for Berk Chems. and now had trucks running for “Nynas” at Shoreham. this was a Swedish company supplying Bitumen to asphalt plants.
this truck was originally on Berk contract but was now labelled up for the Nynas contract. in typical Clapcott style!!!

Eventually they sold off their contracts and leased the yard out to Testwood motors…another one bites the dust.
