GazIOW,
Hi Gary wish Steve a Happy Retirement from Angie and myself,I haven’t forgotten his phone call at 3.30 am many years ago to tell me he was on Frankfurt services and a German livestock wagon had just reversed into the front of his truck,or him climbing up the ivy at Paladini’s trying to get to the girls from the office,in their bedroom   and falling several feet to the ground.
Give my best to Richard GREEN.
Regards
Richard

On to " C " for the Coopers arms on the corner of William St. where Les Slatey had his workshop, spent an hour or three in there, always had a meat draw Saturday lunchtime but had to get all the washdowns done before going in, think its called something else now cheers Buzzer.

Hi Pat, thought you had the hump with us as you’ve been really quiet, now i see why. I am off on the Ventura at the end of this month, the wife wanted to try a “cruise”. more of a channel crossing though as we are on a 2 Dayer to Brugge.

Colin

Hi Pat welcome back and thanks for the" Coach and Horses ", do you know if Billy Robinson is still with the ex Landlady of that pub her name I think was Audrie but not sure. Do you remember when Billys dad upset him when they lived at Minstead and he drove his new F88 straight through the garage and destroyed it and also when he had a funny turn in his house in Romsey and went awol cutting up all the furniture with a chainsaw, rumour has it the police would not go in till he ran out of petrol, cheers John.

Hi John I haven’t seen Bill for many years so do not know if he is still with Audrie! I sometimes see Jimmy Alford on the golf course at Hamptworth I will ask him next time he may know! Last time I saw young John Symes was at Tutty’s party at Alresford a couple of years ago I think he was driving a unit pulling a medical scanner, and had been on for Meachers!

Carrying on from and earlier post.

the first job for newbies at Clapcotts was running crude oil from oilfields, in Horndean and Alton, down to the Esso refinery, this meant many trips through the infamous Hockley traffic lights where in Summer you could queue for hours.

ERF with crude oil trailer ( the lettering had been changed to the drivers initials)

Later in life with sleeper cab and new owner.

From Nutsey Lane Clapcotts had tankers running on contract to Esso fawley, Berk chemicals, Carless Exploration and Shell whilst at Poole they had a contract with BP at Wytch Farm oilfield and also some work for Shell. They started a transport company in London called STAG, made up from their names (Seymore, Trevor and Graham), but the operations manager there was ripping them off and it was eventually sold to City Transport.

Hi Colin

No I did not have the hump as you put it, I try to log on when ever we were in a port but only had limited data allowance! The internet on board the Ventura was very expensive so I switched data roaming off! Calls both to and from my mobile were also extremely expensive £1.64p a minute to call and about £1.30p to receive calls!

Your recall of the Clapcotts is interesting I knew they had a depot at Millbank for years if fact I helped to demolish the workshop, the ground was incorporated into Halls Aggregates yard. I also knew they had a workshop/yard at Nutsey Lane now part of Calmore Ind Estate, where was their yard at Nursling?

I knew Trevor and Seymour quite well they used to drink at Minstead Club, and that is where I last saw Trevor at Pip Hickmans daughters wake a few years ago, he was not as sharp as he was and said he knew me and called me ‘Murphy’ . Seymour was living Oxford way. I did not know Graham that well although had a few cups of tea with him and Seymour at their Parkstone yard just around the corner from Mark Compton’s yard, he had a very nasty experience when his home was broken into and he was beaten up quite badly.

As JD would say “More Mary Hopkin moments”

Pat,

yeah I got that wrong, I meant Nutsey Lane (now edited post).

as I said previously I found them all, including Colin and Neville (the outcasts) really nice people and all had terrific knowledge on trucks, engines, fuel pumps etc. in fact the Co. was called “Diesel Fuel Pump and Injector Services” but everyone knew the firm as “Clapcotts”.

here’s one of their old AEC’s at Mannings Heath, i think this one had been parked up for some time!

Todays pub letter is " E " for the Elephant and Castle although it is no longer there as it was demolished to make way for houses and flats on the Bursledon road out of Southampton, cheers Buzzer.
