Can’t pinpoint the exact location of that particular one mate, but looking at the terrain

Hi Stuart,
Last time I saw you was with Martin Lyons, and Robin Bartlett in the yard at Fareham station,do you remember Edward Bear and the police taking pics of Martins house on the hard shoulder of the M27 ?

Richard
Hi Richard…I, of course , remember you , but not that specific time you speak of with Martin and Rob " Loose Cannon " Bartlett…
However, I remember the yard and in particular Mr Leonard " Eddie Bear " Watkins…and his garage business on Station Approach…he’s the one that used to come over , have a cuppa and tell us tales of his time as a wheel man for the Krays… I thought he was full of ****… How wrong was I ■■? I’ll tell a bit of the story later…
Hope all good with you by the way… Steve Johnson and Roy Maclean were about at that time, am still in touch with Roy, but Steve? Last I spoke about 10 years ago or more he was in Eastleigh working for ■■? Cant remember… doing wine though I think…
Colin Smith was a subbie… and saw him at Claudes about 3 years ago… cheers. Stu

Blimey Jim, that could be almost anywhere but I,ll guess at being on the coast road
past Monaco heading towards Ventimilia.
Good guess Tony , nearly got it ! Over looking Genoa, flatbed and ropes and sheets !! went to Genoa with a container but can’t think what I reloaded !! Long time ago now .
Will call tomorrow ,

I wasn’t,t too far out then Jimmer, in the early days on Davies we used to
sometimes take containers out ( been mentioned before ) and loaded back
with washing machines from Philcos near Bergamo.
Maybe you did that or was it tiles or marble ?

Hi Rich… ta for the info …when and where is the August bash? I might just come out of my reclusive state and show up!
I remember the Eddie Watkins thing very well, mainly because for a while I was suspected of being involved! Eddie had come to us and asked that we take a 20 foot box that he had " refurbished " in his workshop to Rotterdam ( empty) the story was that he had sold it. We quoted him and he paid cash , no invoice. We were a driver short at the time so I did the job , accompanied by Eddie. We shipped Dover/Ostend but whilst waiting in the queue to load we were turned over by customs and they found 10 grand in Eddies holdall.I think there was a limit on the amount of cash you could take out then… They carted him off but released him after questioning and allowed him to keep the money. I remember thinking that was a bit strange.
We took the container to Rotterdam , and unloaded it into a transport yard and Eddie was met there by a few dodgy looking geezers. He stayed , and I went off to back load . About 3 weeks later Eddie asked to rent a unit and a skelly, I can’t remember what the story was this time…but Martin rented him an M.A.N. and a skelly. it was a couple of days later that he shipped in through Dover with 2.5 Mils worth of Cannabis hidden in a false floor of the “refurbished” box. He was under surveillance and when Police and Customs stopped him in East London, he drew a gun and shot Peter Bennet a customs officer.
When the balloon went up , we were raided at 7.30 the next morning by armed police. It turned out that I had also been under surveillance and my phone tapped. They had pictures of me on the ferry with Eddie and also the police had commandeered a house opposite mine ( coincidentally, next door to Mickey Leach )and had pictures of me taken from there. I was taken to Cosham police Station and then to Southampton where i had about 2 hours of " good cop, bad cop ". Finally, when they decided I was innocent, I then became an important witness! Thankfully I didn’t have to testify at the Old Bailey, just my statement read out.
Eddie wasn’t one of the big fish, but the 2 main blokes were Colin " Duke " Ashton, who was shot dead a month later and dumped on Hackney Marshes and George Francis, who was shot outside his haulage yard in 1981. Eddie got 25 years and topped himself in Brixton nick.
As for the spuds, my gardening mentor is Lord Busby of Burseldon and am waiting for this weeks tips. All the best, Stu.
Hi Tribsa Rich… Thanks for the info…
Mike used to be a regular in the Elm Tree Swanwick when I used that pub a lot about 10 years ago and he was living in Locks Heath.
Roy has been in a wheelchair with MS for many years now.He remained employed by Royers as a consultant and Director, not sure if that’s still the case. I used to visit him regularly until I moved out here 4 years ago. The last time I spoke to him was about two years ago. I lost his phone number but I must make an effort and get in touch… Cheers for now… Stu.
Hi Balders bin reading your little story and your brush with the boys in blue pitty it was not longer as I was getting right in to it,not quite a book but then Mappo’s brother Keith has been going to publish his ever since I have known him and has never quite got there,by the way gardners update is on the other channel DIT so for your update you must log on there, cheers Buzzer.
Mornin JD… re “B” for Bedford
I did a little bit for H Aburrows delivering fruit and veg for a while when I was about 19. They had TK’s. It was an awful job, 4o’clock starts delivering to schools and hospitals in Hants and Wilts. All, for about 5 bob a week. Their yard was on Curdridge Lane…( I think) probably got houses on it now… I took my test in a Tk artic… If you could call it that, with a little empty 20 foot trailer… In the mid 80’s I drove a KM for Scorpion Racing from Thruxton, I seem to remember having a few battles with it’s gearbox!
Also in about '73 I was driving a TK three tonner for a bloke near Heathrow, used to go all over the country delivering paint and tyres , all rope and sheet. I remember you could just about kip on the shelf at the back! It was there , I did my first trip abroad, to Brussels. I shipped Dover , was as green as grass. I spoke to a bloke on the car deck, an 01’er with a 110 Scanny. He pointed me in the right direction for the drivers lounge. I didn’t realise you got a meal, and somehow ended up with a plastic plates as per a normal punter. When I sat down next to this bloke and the other drivers he said " look at that mate. When you get a proper truck you’ll get a proper plate! "…cue much laughter! Ha!, never forgotten that.

I didn’t want to go on too long about it, but it was certainly an experience! George Francis used to trade as G. E. Francis and had a few trucks from the 70’s onwards, ran M/E for a while and gets a mention on the Astran thread now and again. He was involved ( allegedly) in the Brinks Mat robbery at Heathrow. If you google " the curse of the Brinks Mat robbery " it’ll throw up some info about him and a few others I mentioned…
perhaps we should start another thread for True Crime and Gardening! Happy Hoeing . Balders.
