No then about a year later I progresses to an SX 200 Lambretta which I bought from a mate of mine who’s son is now married to my daughter !! Hang on it gets better ! I was riding along Winchester Road, in Shirley and I was just coming up to the junction with Anglesea Road when a maroon MK 2 Zepher pulled right out in front of me What a Tos…r me thinks, after pickin meself and scooter up off the road I found one of my shoes in the front garden of one of the houses, yeah came off big time ! Any how the Zepher had stopped this fella comes up and says sorry nipper didn’t see ya ! So now comes the exchange of address’s so I gave him mine, he gave me his … Mr Steven Drake !! The next time I saw him some 12/13 years later was when I was shipping out one Sunday night out of Pomey think he was on for Morry McNess, any how as I knew Morry I told him the story, so then there was a Oi Drakey !! at the top of his voice you knocked this fella of his scooter, made a right screen, what a laugh!! I knew him right away ,and so do a lot of the fella’s on here !
once you’ve meet him you’ll never forget him, Hi Steve !  he probably reads this !!

Yes pat was gregs it was his boy john that worked at bennetts, i always used to hang about the shop and had a part time job in the tumble in cafe next door do you remember it

There was another place we used to go to for spare parts caleed Ron Stillo’s you could get nearly anything there as he was a breaker as i remember it was near where i took my bike test which i failed first time.Saterdays were spent cruising round the dealers to see what they had in new,Lawton and Wilson i always thought had the best stock.Jim i never would have had you down as a mod with all the trimmings i thought you would have had a big Triumph.
Charlie you are right my ariel did smoke like hell and the same happened to me as Jimmer thought i was clever and came a guttser on the first bend going to fast but soon got the hang of it and soon progressed to the bigger bikes, course only when i still managed to keep my license which was not for long, cheers Buzzer.

Hi Buzzer yeah John MOD’s were the way ! But Greasers always had the better bikes  how about you getting another bike I’ve got my Harley we could do a trip to see Fergie47 via La Ferry Boat, maybe Pat could get another Triumph and do a few wheelies on the way!

Regards Jim

Hi John.

Yes I took my bike test near there aswell the test station was in Dukes Road in part of the old glove factory.

Ron Stillo had a yard in Verulam Road, Bevois Valley, in fact it used to be over the wall at the bottom of the garden of the house where dad and my brother and sister now live in in Clausentum Road, we used to live in Empresss Road. I believe Ron is still about and he lives over Botley way, I moved and stored a big crawler crane for him a few years ago, he spends a lot of time in Australia.

I also remember he owned the ex Lowmans (The Bakers) building in Dukes Road where Brains had a workshop I expect Les can confirm that as I think he worked there!

Ron’s son Colin was a fitter for Brains and Pentalver I am pretty certain he died a few years ago.

Regards Pat

Not very likely Jim now as I don’t mind admitting I absolutely hate being on a bike now, I feel too vunerable and prefer some steel around me.

The bike I had was a 700cc 1959 Royal Enfield Constellation I had built up from parts way back in 1969 here is a pic of it with me onboard!!

If I remember rightly they were known as the Black Cat,s

I remember the Black Cat Fodens named Black Cat and Black Cat 2 I also seem to recall that the second one was stolen from the dealer in Avonmouth and was cut up and sent to Australia by Cranes and Commercials here in Southampton, the engine was found in Australia after a haulier who had bought the engine contacted Caterpiller for any history of it. The first one went to an owner driver I think.

So not sure if Ralph did have any!

Regards Pat

Ralph did run a couple and there was a subbie from Northants with an Irish plate (North) HIL ■■? think his name was Edwin .It is true that a young lad put one of the Fodens over the side of the mountain on the N6 between Vallodolid and Madrid loaded with Kodak from Hemel Hempstead (RIP) I think the Fodens were on contract hire from a firm in Stoke on Trent as were 3 Scania 113s F ■■? TAD and several others such as an ERF L15 ETR? and several Renaults and 3 MAN 6x2 Units L ■■? JSS
