Jimski:
Now now lads, only went in a couple of times,a young driver persuaded by older buggers to look at the finer points of life in Southampton. It were nowt out of the ordinary, not after spending two and half years in Singapore in the early 60s.
I eventually started to stay over in a transport motel in Millbrook(?),near Freightliner Terminal and Calor’s depot so the Juniper Berry was too far to walk to.
Hope you wernt down in Sambuwang village Chris in Singers !! good run ashore that was !!
The place your on about in Millbook, is that the place with that Damm myna bird !! Wasn’t you Chris that taught it all that bad vocabulary was it !!!
Regards Jimski
I can’t recall a Mynah Bird in that place Jimski,I suppose it would be about 1972/3 when I first stayed there,it was handy for away to ISR at Hythe,a regular tip/reload for us. There was a big boozer across the road from the motel, but I can’t remember the name of it. Certainly more upmarket than Juniper Berry but not half as much fun. Sembawang was RN wasn’t it,I was a Crabfat at RAF Changi 1964-66,Bugis Street,Lavender Street and Lorong 33 Geylang were Juniper type areas. Changi village could be quite entertaining at night as well…
I had to behave mesen as my dad was a Flt Sgt in the RAF Police/SBI at Seletar at the same time and also I was married with our lass with me,by my side, watching…
On second thoughts there may well have been a Mynah Bird at Millbrook, might have been the one that said “BRS drivers are wan*ers”,can’t be sure.
Hi Chris yeah Sembawang village was our run ashore I was 16/17 years old then and having a Damm good time, I had a photo taken in a bar there with a Cheif Stoker form our ship the photo went missing years and years ago then about two months ago my Daughter turns up with it blimey what a shock I looked like a kid! Well that’s time for ya !!
Still with your Dad there at the time would have kept you away from places like that !!
Like Pat said the pub was probably the Regents Park or the Sailors Return which was also just across the road!
It looks like it was Sammyopisite who is to blame for the myna birds vocal humor !!!
Regards Jimski

Hi Jimski I said I got blamed it might not have been me but I still seem to be blamed for most things
cheers Johnnie
Chris Webb:
The Regents Park sounds like the pub I mean,Sailor’s Return I would have avoided as it would be dodgy ground if the buggers had been at sea for a long time - Rum,Bum and Baccy and all that.
A more refined place to stay was a place on the Fawley road,on the right before turning down to ISR at Hythe, think it was called The Pinewood. Nice and clean and good snap. Was it Marchwood, can’t remember. There used to be some digs as you ran into S’oton on the A33,maybe called Seven Dials or summat, late 60s when I stayed there.
Hi Chris that place near Fawley is called Hardley
There was a place in Southampton called Six Dials (now long gone) where six roads crossed and there was a big pub on one corner there called The Edinburgh, Bakers had a yard quite near.
I seem to recall the cafe was set quite far back with parking in front and it would be BRS / Pickfords depot as freightliners was only a new project then and I am sure they all shared the same yard but each had their own office. The Calor gas outlet was near the entrance so easily accessible from the road if I remember correctly but this would be around late 60s early 70s.
cheers Johnnie
Firstly a very well known Southampton Haulier who is now half the man he was, and he outside the yard of another local haulier who is unfortunately now deceased RIP.
Thanks for the Southampton info lads, aye,Hardley was where the Pinewood was and I think I parked on the road when I stayed at 6 dials,I don’t recall a lorry park. Anyroad tankers didn’t have to be labelled in those days so it could have been watter inside it for all the passers-by knew.
Another place was called - I think - Cliff Ore’s,can’t quite recall where those digs were but not too far from the J B.
It weren’t Sammie that taught that Mynah Bird to swear,Northeners wouldn’t do that sort of thing,I reckon they were day trippers from Jersey or Guernsey that did it…

Eyup richard,happy new year.
Had a week in Jersey for Xmas and a feller over there told me that trippers from Jersey went to S’oton shopping and stirring up trouble, including teaching Mynah birds to blaspheme. Flew ovver t’Solent and looked for ISR and then Juniper Berry but too much cloud,I did see one of Mainland Market Deliveries wagons on that new M-way called the M40 but he left our plane as though it were hanging in t’air. He’d be in Manchester before we were in t’Isle of Man.
Best get off to bed, getting dafter, take care.

A short explanation;
Hi John
Mark Harris gave me the pics today he was in my yard today with Mick Leech they were picking up a heavy load just 400 yards from me!
His wife, or ex should I say, used to break horses, yes of course it was the late Mick Chappells old yard by his house!
When I worked at Prince’s I used to go across the road for my dinner some days to the “Pop In” Cafe which is still there, run by different people but still could be family to a big guy with a moustache, he had it then in the late '70’s…Frank?
Was it Queens cafe outside Fawley Gate 1 roundabout? Always had a sarnie in there when on a trip to Blackfield Depot, mid 70’s. It used to be very busy, always trucks on the front but in the latter years just the odd white van man.

Hi Gazzer I think you’ll find that the Pop In was run by a fella called Pete with the tash and some time in the 80’s if memory serves that cafe got closed for a while … um yeah not to good
