When I used to be parked up on a night out by the baths on Western Esplanade I would hear those ERF’s of Meachers going out on nights, those with the 8cyl Gardners were one of the sweetest sounding motors going.

Now come on Trev, tell us what you really thought when those Meachers 8 potters woke you up? " Yow 'am noisy [zb] [zb]" !! Happy new Year by the way ! Cheers Dennis.

Yes happy new year Dennis ! No those motors didn’t wake me up, I’d be going over the road to the Juniper berry to get a skinful and see the local sights :open_mouth:

Now now lads, only went in a couple of times,a young driver persuaded by older buggers to look at the finer points of life in Southampton. It were nowt out of the ordinary, not after spending two and half years in Singapore in the early 60s.
I eventually started to stay over in a transport motel in Millbrook(?),near Freightliner Terminal and Calor’s depot so the Juniper Berry was too far to walk to.

I can’t recall a Mynah Bird in that place Jimski,I suppose it would be about 1972/3 when I first stayed there,it was handy for away to ISR at Hythe,a regular tip/reload for us. There was a big boozer across the road from the motel, but I can’t remember the name of it. Certainly more upmarket than Juniper Berry but not half as much fun. Sembawang was RN wasn’t it,I was a Crabfat at RAF Changi 1964-66,Bugis Street,Lavender Street and Lorong 33 Geylang were Juniper type areas. Changi village could be quite entertaining at night as well…
I had to behave mesen as my dad was a Flt Sgt in the RAF Police/SBI at Seletar at the same time and also I was married with our lass with me,by my side, watching…
On second thoughts there may well have been a Mynah Bird at Millbrook, might have been the one that said “BRS drivers are wan*ers”,can’t be sure.

Hi Chris

That pub could possibly have been the Regents Park Hotel straight across Millbrook road and about a five minute walk up on the left!

Here is a pic coming out of Southampton towards that motel it was just past the freightliner terminal on the left.

I dare say you would have gone around this (Millbrook) roundabout, before they put a flyover here, on your way to Fawley

Regards Pat

Hi Bev

Not sure on the cafe but yes the road used to split into Waterloo Road coming into Southampton and Millbrook Road going out! on the lefthandside going out just before Freightliners there was a Motorcycle dealer Lawton and Wilson!

Also do you remember when one of the the roads out of Southampton went past the front of the Swimming Baths and Pirellis factory by the old walls.

Notice the old Thames Trader behind?

Jim I stayed at the Millbrook for a couple of weeks we were doing some big loads internal at Esso Fawley and bye the time we nearly done the mynah bird was fluent at straight speaking Yorkshire vocabulary and I was blamed and received a bollocking but it did know the words already and and it was only its pronunciation which changed
cheers Johnnie

Yes Scorey P should be in today as usual but I don’t know who else will come!

Yes I think Pirellis had a few, one in town, one at Leigh Road, Eastleigh, and another at Chickenhall Lane, Bishopstoke.

Hi Chris yeah Sembawang village was our run ashore I was 16/17 years old then and having a Damm good time, I had a photo taken in a bar there with a Cheif Stoker form our ship the photo went missing years and years ago then about two months ago my Daughter turns up with it blimey what a shock I looked like a kid! Well that’s time for ya !!
Still with your Dad there at the time would have kept you away from places like that !!
Like Pat said the pub was probably the Regents Park or the Sailors Return which was also just across the road!

It looks like it was Sammyopisite who is to blame for the myna birds vocal humor !!!

Regards Jimski

The Regents Park sounds like the pub I mean,Sailor’s Return I would have avoided as it would be dodgy ground if the buggers had been at sea for a long time - Rum,Bum and Baccy and all that.
A more refined place to stay was a place on the Fawley road,on the right before turning down to ISR at Hythe, think it was called The Pinewood. Nice and clean and good snap. Was it Marchwood, can’t remember. There used to be some digs as you ran into S’oton on the A33,maybe called Seven Dials or summat, late 60s when I stayed there.
