Here are a couple of Chris Hill’s pics anyone know where they were taken??
The 2nd picture was taken from outside Heinz (BRS) Warehouse in Central Road, showing the Hill’s vehicle Westbound and about to cross Central Railway bridge
I meant Southern Road, not Central Road as the BRS depot was in Southern Road (later became Norman Offer transport depot)
Yes quite correct the New Police Station is there now.

here you are john/tony/pat,a mans motor, this is the motor John which i met up with Scott with. I contacted Bubbleman in desperation as i had looked for her in the Foden thread, but found nothing a big thankyou to Bubbleman(Marc) for looking through thousands of Foden photo’s once again Marc Many Thanks. When we first had this truck she travelled extensively into Europe, North Africa and Turkey plus Eastern block and Scandinavia. The Canadians call this truck a four and a quarter snorker she had the big CAT engine in her married up to a 12 speed fuller. This picture was taken courtesy of Marc(Bubbleman) at the Shepton Mallet truck festival. I used to load a lot for Ralph Davies with wet fish for Spain out of Bellshill and Aberdeen. Also did a lot for DelCampo SA, down to Spain with Sun Valley turkey pieces, but she started her life working for Chivers International out of Chingford regulary running to Tunisia i remember once loading Sun Valley 40 ton payload turkey pieces for Delcampo and took these to Pontavedra on the west coast of Spain between La Caruna and Vego. Was running with 2 of Ralph’s 500 centurians and we approached the mountain at Ordenza and weigh tfor weight i just feathered the throttle and let the pump take over i went by Ralphies centurians with a big smile on my face. If anyone else has any photo’s of this truck pm me please.

Hello trunker08
There are a couple of names there i remember.Les Tull drove for Russell Davis for years mainly on TML contract if i remember correctly.
Bill Bodmin ended up at Henry Smithers as head of engineering.I think dad has a photo of Brian Pore and Bill Bodmin i will put it on at some point. All the names you mention ive heard dad speak of those drivers.I think dad mated with Reg Green for a while.Have you spoke to dad lately?
Regards Jacko jnr
Les Tull was one of the 4 original drivers to join Silver Roadways when they opened their Southampton depot in 1973 (3 of the drivers were ex Bakers-Les Tull,George Loveridge & Doug ----.The 4th was Pete Prouse ex Lamberts)
Nationally Silver Roadways were by this time predominantly Mercedes operators, but 4 new Leyland powered S39 Fodens were
allocated to Southampton. Tate & Lyle had various dealerships & at Totton ,TES became the ERF dealership which late passed to KL Commercials ( Meachers)
Les Tull’s time with Silver Roadways sadly proved to be short lived after he entered the demolition business when coming down the hill in Whitchurch.Note that his well roped load of packaged sugar didn’t move
Gerry Whelan was another Totton driver (having transferred from Silver Roadways London depot). He then became an owner driver with a MB 1924 tractor unit financed by a farmer/smallholder from Linwood in the forest (Pete Hailey) He then worked for LTS Freight Ltd on containers & traction, as did Mike Walker((M&S transport,Swanage) with his violet coloured Scania 80 PRV—J.
Both later moved further afield with Astrans
I knew Gerry Whelan RIP quite well and I bought his last truck from him a Scania 140 KJN 671P
This is KJN when Gerry had it
This is KJN with Eddie Huntley who drove it for me
It started life at Astrans as a rigid drawbar outfit and was later cut down to a tractor unit
hi kerbut, i cant honestly remember ralphy having any mate,he was buying centurion when i was pulling for him,but hay, he my have had one or two but never saw them mate. :rol cant remember hearing about the accident there used that route quite a bit myself, running down to aviro in portugale and 'load for HURGOS on the yugo/hungerian boarder with cod steaks.
kerbut:
If I remember rightly they were known as the Black Cat,s
I remember the Black Cat Fodens named Black Cat and Black Cat 2 I also seem to recall that the second one was stolen from the dealer in Avonmouth and was cut up and sent to Australia by Cranes and Commercials here in Southampton, the engine was found in Australia after a haulier who had bought the engine contacted Caterpiller for any history of it. The first one went to an owner driver I think.
My first venture abroad with the Solent Southroad Pidgeon Federation from Southampton. Driver Colin Read and Convoyer John Heuze. Pidgeon release here at Rennes 1973/4.
hi gazza,i took a load of stinking skins once down to pau for rawlings at alton ,and remember loads of pigeon carriers heading down to pau, often wondered how many made it back,as pigeon is a delicacy in france, and funny enough if my memory serves me well,PAU in french stands for skin, no doubt someone on here will tell me im wrong, pat scorey might know,he speaks pretty good french.
Bloody hell Gazzer, you,re a bit of a dark horse, you kept that to yourself. Never knew you did that.
Like you Bev, i remember seeing loads of pigeon carriers back in the day.
