Long Departed Southampton Hauliers (Part 1)

Fergie47:
Is that Endle street Pat, near Bakers yard ?..for the life of me, I can’t remember the name, although I’ve been in it a few times…

No Dave

It was the New Farmhouse near the Mount Pleasant Rail Crossing, I had a couple of pints in the Old Farmhouse opposite on Christmas Eve, and that was where the pic was hanging on the wall.

Used to pass it on my way to and from Southampton Docks pulling trailers for Sea Route Ferry in Empress Road.

Regards Pat

Maybe the reason for the lapse of memory Dave is the consumption of a couple of bottles of “fine” red and a few Brandy’s this lunch time, well I’ll bet it was far better than the “screen wash” you sent me this Christmas!! By the way it still hasn’t arrived, are the Ferries on strike by any chance ? Oh!and can I wish you and the Family a Merry Christamas and a Prosperous and and Happy 2013,Cheers ,your pal from up 'Norf !! Dennis.

Hello Den…you know, I didn’t want to surprise you again this year, what with the load of Brie and 40’ ft van of our best red, that Carryfast delivered last year ( I do hope you got it ? he said he was very trust worthy) So, I thought I’d back off a bit, didn’t want to show favoritism to the “Up Norf” brigade, and also, seeing the picture of that 240 in that Big J that was on another thread, I thought you might have had a cardiac arrest, and had to go and lay down over the Xmas period…that would have been a waste of a decent vin rouge, so I sent it to the Southampton home for penniless and retired S’oton lads…which happens to be in Pat’s yard, open Thursdays only…so if you’re that way Den, drop in… :unamused:

Anyway, a happy new year to you and Anne, hope 2013 is good to you both…

Hey Richard i did not know your first trucks were painted green,JD.

Was sent this old pic Mappo’s first truck

Presumably Monty used to drive this 1962 Albion Chieftan. Interestingly it’s parked on the old Southampton lorry park, behind the old swimming baths .The lorry park was originally surfaced with clinker from the power station (located where Toy’s R Us etc are currently) Smith’s had an office in West Park Road (behind the Mayflower/Gaumont)

Think that was his 20th wagon Pat, he got that brand new when he was 45…after that he got the one that’s on the back of Richards Maggie, but it was a bit slow, only 2 Italy’s a week… :unamused:

PS. New Years resolution…stop bashing Mappo … :smiling_imp: …Naaaaa…think I’ll break that one, no fun… :stuck_out_tongue:

Correct, for a short while, it was more a spare shunt wagon before being sent back to Maddiston…and the pic was taken at the baths car park. I spoke to Mont last night, we’re gonna go through the pic’s that Pat put on, and give discriptions of what, who, where, and when, just top make it more interesting…
I started at Smiths in '68, when the office was at West Park Road, Bob Alford was the manager and Pete was the traffic lad ( can’t remember his last name, but he went on to sell old books somewhere in town )…The “yard” was down by the floating bridge, along with Jamesons and Yardleys, the pub opposite the yard ( Name ? ) was the second “office” !
Did you work for them roolechat ?
