When i’ve been driving and speaking to other drivers they have different opinions on what a strap, chains etc can hold. I once secured a 9 ton half height container with 3 straps and then was asked by another driver why it wasn’t chained. Is there anywhere that states exactly what straps, chains etc are good for?
can’t see the problem myself, each strap is minimum 5 tonne, giving 15 tonne
next time you see this eeejit, hit him with a big wet fish

You will probabally find a chain more suitable for that job

you have a very valid point there mate
euroscot, next time you see this eeejit, hit him with a big wet chain
is that better 4whatitsworth?
This might not be exactly what you’re looking for but there is an old thread on the law on carrying loads where Denis F suggests a couple of books which go into more detail on the subject.

I wouldn’t have even have bothered with the 3rd strap, but then again when I was driving artics it was a common occurence to load 6 minis with only a rope crossed across the back one

Thats what i thought 5 ton each and i was playin it safe, when he gave me a bollockin he said after their first use they are then down rated to 2 ton.

I wonder what a two tonne strap would be rated after it had been used.
I know we live in a throw away society but…

I’m afraid he would haha. He used to train new starts but he works on the gantry now in the dales site where i pulled in when he had a word, he also knows me and proceeded to call me ‘driver’.
Not all straps are 5 tonne, the swl will be on a label on the strap and the ratchet.

Yeah, they have some crackers. I used to do part time work for them, had enough of this kinda crap then their own drivers can’t even couple up with breaking something.
BS EN 12195-1:2003, gives detailed guidance on lashing forces for load restraint
assemblies and the calculation of restraint required. The Standard states:
The general requirements for safe transport are:
- the sum of forces in any direction equals zero
- the sum of moments in any plane equals zero
For a load restrained by frictional lashing, the Standard provides a formula for
calculating the number of lashings required to secure the load against sliding.
Where n is the number of lashings, m is the mass of the load, g is the acceleration due
to gravity, μD is the dynamic friction factor, k is a factor given by tables in the Standard
and ! is the vertical angle.
