So maybe someone should inform the police that its all changed - back in '97
It was earlier than that, IIRC 1990/91, so they’re even more out of date I know I got a ‘new’ style licence in 1992.

Agreed : It’s 30 for a reason - so do 30
Or even less. The reason for a 30 zone is partly to do with pedestrian judgment. The judgement of when to cross the road, plus other important hazard situations.

I smugly suggest that thirty is the limit given absolutely sound conditions …not a target simply because. I suspect that we all know this - but many vehicles only get spec’d with a throttle on/off and it’s their drivers that really need to read this lark instead of being normal…
an HGV with one axle i think not
hgv 3 was two axle rigid
hgv 2 was three or more axles and rigid

Was it the traffic police or normal police. My mate is in the normal police, occasionally has to do speed traps, bit harsh getting done for 34mph in a 30mph, my mate says their tollerance is 41mph in a 30mph, unless driving like a ■■■.
Anyways he admits he doesent know the first thing about tachographs or truck regulations but then again it aint really part of his job to know, he mostly is walking the streets.

Is it ? So you know the road ? The circumstances.
The plod don’t have a mind of their own these days, thats the policy of the force he works with. Fixed penalty above 41mph.
Just glad i dont live in England where speed cameras grow like trees, and just about every 40mph speed limit has been reduced to 30mph.
Local councils have been messing about with speed limits for so long, even that police chief for North Wales agrees a lot of the speed limits have been reduced wrongly and are too low. 15 years ago i would have agreed a 30mph limit was fair in most places, these days in a lot of areas its a joke.

We’ve the lowest death rate on the roads since time began …as apparent recent figures announced and I don’t have a single snag with them. Ex girlfriend drove me back from the pub in my car and got flashed/fined. I laughed, she got the ticket/fine and I got credibility for spotting it, keeping zip & not back-seat driving. I got a kicking for laughing though…
Kenny1975:

Or we’re all getting the blanket treatment because a copper’s discretion to ‘ping’ the real guilty fools is no longer an available asset because they’ve been taken off traffic and put into anti-terrorism branches…?
Fatalities rates have been in the decrease for 30odd years, mainly due to improved car design and fixing bad roads. Infact it has slowed down where not getting the large drops used to get, infact the other year they went up.
My idiot of a neighbour crashed a brand new Toyota thing, going 90mph on the M74 was nothing left of the car and he walked away from it. Seen a Corsa smashed into a motorway bridge on the M6 not much left again the girl driving it standing next to it crying apart from that fine. Try that in a Nova and prob be dead.
Old A77 Kilmarnock to Glasgow dangerous road, lots of fatalities replace it with a motorway, i sit at 80mph in the car and most other cars are flying past me as if i am standing still yet not a single fatality on that road.
Speaking to a few white van men about speed cameras they say they are the greatest thing ever to happen. Lets them go as fast as they want, with a satnav and the fact most are bright yellow, pretty hard to miss them. Means as well little chance of police being around.
Guess the offshot of that policy is things like drink driving, driving with no insurance and general bad driving is on the increase.

Hi Guys,Just been out in my car, to cut long story short I got stopped for speeding (34 in a 30)
Fair enough, hands up I did it, work has been informed etc and thats not what my question is about. When the police officer was looking my license over he asked if it was a LGV or a HGV entitlement on the back.
I said “Are they not the same thing?” to which he said “not according to my form”
On the ticket there are options for 4 types of license options, above a standard car license: Provisional, PSV, HGV and LGV.
I told him to tick LGV as thats the test that I took.
I’d always thought they were the same thing! anyone able to explain why they’d be two different options?
Alex
Um why was he asking the entitlement as u were in a car the others dont come into the picture.
could be you will get points and not the option of a low speeder training day

ACPO guidelines on tolerance used to be marked speed+10%+2mph, so in a 30mph zone up to 35mph before action taken, obviously at the officers discretion.

OK you clever lot.
I suppose I should have said only one axle at the back.
I stand correcstsed. - I love the idea of an LGV Ricksahw though

Well you could have refused to sign the ticket until this matter was cleared up with DVLA. He may have decided to let you off as he may of thought about having to do lots of paperwork.
I still think its a bit strange that they changed HGV to LGV when the entitlement is based on weight not size

I think the wording of the HGV, LGV, is irrelevant, the reason the copper will need this information is so he can inform the TC that you held a vocational licence and should have known the speed limit. It doesnt absolve you of informing the TC though.

@Alex,are you certain it was 34mph you were travelling at? Bear in mind of the plus 10% rule.
ACPO guidelines are 10% +2 mph but that in itself isn’t a defense.
What you need to check is how he measured your speed, it sounds like it was local plod not traffic, if so then if he used his speedo to measure your speed the speedo must have 1mph increments, which in a local car is very unlikely. Check out www.pepipoo.com.

And these figures can be solely attributed to the growth in speed cameras - I think not!
