Just been out in my car, to cut long story short I got stopped for speeding (34 in a 30)
Fair enough, hands up I did it, work has been informed etc and thats not what my question is about.
When the police officer was looking my license over he asked if it was a LGV or a HGV entitlement on the back.
I said “Are they not the same thing?” to which he said “not according to my form”
On the ticket there are options for 4 types of license options, above a standard car license: Provisional, PSV, HGV and LGV.
I told him to tick LGV as thats the test that I took.
I’d always thought they were the same thing! anyone able to explain why they’d be two different options?
maybe hgv entitlement is for the people who took a hgv test before 1997, and could already drive 7.5 tonners on a car licence through grandfather rights.
that would mean lgv entitlement would be for people who passed the lgv (hgv) test after 1997, meaning that once passed that would entitle them to drive 7.5 tonners as well. this would make sence as a 7.5 tonner isnt a heavy vehicle and has never been classed as one.
Sheeter:
My original black HGV licence has the Class 4 & 4A definition in it:
The tractor unit had to weigh no more than 2 tons - but a driver under 21 years old could drive it…
I knew I’d seen it written somewhere, I should have got my old licence out and looked. But anyway, that licence must have been specially for the old little Scammells etc, perhaps ?
I Reckon The Copper who pulled you over was a Newbie Himself Mate! Just left Police School or something, Think they know it all about everything some of them’

Well not this one’
Yeah I reckon it might well have been, its just with it being on the form, you’d think the people that put these things together would have to check their facts before they got them printed wouldn’t you?
My mate is in the normal police, occasionally has to do speed traps, bit harsh getting done for 34mph in a 30mph, my mate says their tollerance is 41mph in a 30mph, unless driving like a ■■■.
Anyways he admits he doesent know the first thing about tachographs or truck regulations but then again it aint really part of his job to know, he mostly is walking the streets.

Well if they are in a position to pull you then they should be completely in the know about what they are doing.
Sadly they aint.
It used to be HGV 1 - artics
HGV 2 Rigids with two or more axles
HGV 3 Rigids with one axle
I could not remember whast HGV 4 was.
I know if you had HGV 3 you could drive a W+D as trailer law had not been introduced but you could not drive an articulated vehicle.
When it all changed HGV was completely abolished and replaced with LGV
So it went from HEAVY good vehicle to LARGE goods vehicle
So maybe someone should inform the police that its all changed - back in '97
I do remember when they changed the licences from the little black books to putting the entitlement on the ordinary licence.
Loads of truckers were pulled by the cops and questioned as to whether they were entitled to drive the truck or not.

Was it the traffic police or normal police.

Excuse me if I am wrong here but driving at 41 in a 30 zone is driving like a ■■■, and your mate should be re trained What hope is there when a normal plod lets something like this pass him/her by.
