The black one with the yellow stripe looks very much like an ex ‘Barber of Oughtibridge’ Roadtrain  Think they had about 7 or 8 on ACL/Cunard container spot hire work in the 80’s all B reg and all a different kind of base colour with a stripe around the middle. Funny thing is, if that is the same motor, I got to drive it regularly on agency when Barber’s had the first NETTO contract and were running out of Gildersome in the old United Carriers place. It was still a good tool then nearly 10 yrs old and I’ve got a couple of pic’s somewhere that I took on Woodhall serv’s; with a brand new 45ft yellow NETTO trl; behind and it looked really smart   the colours just seemed to match
Regards
Dave Penn;

That’s right Dave the next one along was one of Barbers, in fact C135FKH (my old motor) was sold to Barbers and they painted it green and grey and ran it under a company they owned called Dunstan Valley Motors. I thought that with it being black already they would just add a coloured stripe but they repainted it completely.

If Steve had kept it I would probably been roped in on polishing duty

This Leyland Roadtrain was my 1st unit to call my own, to put all my stuff in, and 1st real job doing general haulage on artics C66 SBC, a ■■■■■■■ 14l 320 i had her from about June 1990 til about August 1991.
Then this was the one i had after, G250 UNR also known as the PREDATOR she had a Rolls Royce eagle 325 . She’s the one with the black cats on the wings and a real flyer

Colas have recently started to sell of their working Roadtrains - one popped up at Welland the other day:

Hiya …i worked for Colas at one time and they had some artics with a drive to the trailer wheels. these was single axle.
looking at that roadtrain it looks like it has Albion type drive axels on the trailer. I can,t remember seeing that leyland but it
looks intresting

This was a driven axle trailer too - the trailer wheels also steer – this used to work from the Rowley depot next to the M5 - where did you work from?

Hiya …I worked for Colas building products Chester. we tinned products (H4) for Colas roads. Shell sold Chester of to a management buy out (Laybond)
we still did work for Colas roads for many years after. The depots we run to was Exeter(recently burnt down) Warrington…Grantham…and the midlands depot but not very oftern but did drive past going to Howse paints on the other side of the M5 and once to Inverness with a part load.
If you go to France almost every road construcion job is Colas France. who now own the British Colas plants.
For the people who are asking why they had the Multi-drive(i think thats what its called)system on the trailers was when tar spraying on steep gradients the bitumem would run to the back of the tank transfering the weight off the tractor drive axels and caursing the unit to spin and get stuck. lesson over.

Has anyone got the picture of the Popemobile, it was a cabriolet version in maroon livery

wasnt the cabriolet built by aston martin tickford? seem to remember an item on it in truck magazine.bob

Hiya …i think someone has crossed wires here. the pope mobile was a 6 wheeler constructor with a green house type thing on the back
of the cab not the tickford thing at all. the pope thing was in the truck museum at leyland.
John.

99% sure popemobile is still in the museum at leyland,it was last year, its a 3 axle constructor, and its mint,

needs the daft body dumping and a tipper puttin on it tho

wonder where the colas roadtrains are being sold, one would look great on my drive

Hiya …Popemobile it was in the Leyland museum. but has been sold to a private collector in 2006 for $70,000

Wasn’'t there more than one?

The one in the pic belonged to Mick Hayton for several years

monstrosity that body!

im positive i looked round the popemobile back end of last year,sept/oct before we went on a road run up the A6.

i recon there is more than 1,if you go on bcvm website and search ‘popemobile’ 5 photos come up of it being built,

in the first pic you can see another body behind the one being photographed.

didnt put a link as the pics are copyright and i dont wana go to jail

why build 2 though,seems odd.

oops.

and theres a photo with the reg on SCW 533X

the hayton one is SCW 532X.

guess there are 2.

more reason to bang a tipper on one

Hiya …it dose say Albion on the truck in the photo and it said it was used to transport the pope around Scotland. There was a Ford used in Ireland so maybe
as the truck was,nt as fast as a plane. there would be another truck waiting in the London area…There was a Range Rover at one time doing the job.

Doe’s anyone remember ‘Barbers of Oughtibridge’ they used to have a fistful of Roadtrains on the ACL contract out of Seaforth/Felixstowe. IIRC they were all painted different stripey colours and all had the air deflector kit fitted. I think they were all new B & C reg with the 320 ■■■■■■■ and what’s really weird is that around 92/93 Barbers got some of the NETTO contract out of the old United Carriers depot at Gildersome, Leeds and I did some agency work for them and ended up using one of the old Roadtrains! They must have been nearly 10yrs old by then but still went like the proverbial s** off a shovel.
I do have some photos and as soon as I find & scan them they will be up on here.

i remember barbers on netto contract they were starting to look warn out by then it was 96 97 when i used to see em at netto tong strret bradford when i was on my dinner at hight school they sounded mint love the 14 litre ■■■■■■■ my dad bought a road train in 91 for two year contract hauling garden furniture it had the 290 rolls 75 all day long it was sissons old motor b reg al scan pichure up shortly we had all foden fleet just two left now scanias on fleet now not as gud as fodens
