A couple of nice un’s for this thread

Also I’ve just put the T45 brochure on here viewtopic.php?f=35&t=51362&p=728953#p728953

Does anybody remember these blue T45 Interstaters being on TV back in the 80s? Some sort of challenge where a bunch of non truck drivers (male and female) had to get them round a course, couple and uncouple trailers? I was only a kid at the time, but remember it being pi** funny cos none of them could do it.

Nice Interstator, bit of a Peter Roff look to the colours!

Would I be right in saying the last Roadtrains were fitted with DAF engines & ZF transmissions rebranded as the Leyland DAF 80 series?

Spot on. The Roadtrain made it up to 1993 as the Daf 80, before the 85 came in.

I loved the look of the Roadtrain T45 and thought with the Daf running gear and power it would be a great motor. My only experience of one was with the Spicer box which I hated, or just couldn’t drive it properly. That is the normal reason for hating a gearbox.

My favourite slogan was the Leyland marketing tool.

Oh yea of little faith!

I had that sun-strip in my Lotus Twin cam as they were about as reliable as Northend Thistle :stuck_out_tongue:

Was there a difference between the TL12 fitted to the Marathon and the one fitted to the T45 ? and why was it dropped was it unreliable?

hi thie Robert international interstate is my 2nd truck. all the fleet were in the same livery. we had a scammel roadtrain b reg, a leyland roadtrain ( my 1st truck ). 2 DAFs 1 x 3300 d reg i think and a e reg 3600 and a left ■■■■■■ F12. we were based at Sandwich kent on mainly traction work with our own trailers or Danzas. we were then taken over by the John Dee group who ruined the trucks by lack of servicing and letting subbies have all the paying work while we did the sh*t runs into steel works in wales were you would sit 2 days of the week waiting to get unloaded or back loaded.

Couple of shots that may be of interest of my mid '80s Roadtrain. The first one is waiting for breakdown assistance on the A31 nr Poole. Had to jacknife to tilt cab on a transporter.

thomas armstrong bought some ex demo 8 wheel tippers and liked the colours so painted all there trucks the same and still do

d reg

e reg high datum cab ended up as a shunter in the sand quarry

Hi all some pictures from a T45 leaflet tell me if you want the whole one and then I will scan them for you ? Tony

If anyone wants a project mine is for sale :sunglasses:

A couple pictures I took at snaith last year of the Wimpey Leyland Roadtrain

i liked the old roadtrain but i thought the midlift looked to short did anyone have a rearlift conversion on one i bet that wouldve looked some beast especially with interstater cab

thay were made short to come under the legal length at the time. were the only 6x2 to be able tow a 40 foot trailer.
think some fuel companys had a a rear fift on small wheels, mason shrewsbury had some.

dad had a 6x2 350 tx off dave    pickering 4 month old. had picture of lorry and train on the front, logo on train was where getting there. down the side of lorry was we bin there and back

i had a E reg with 350 ■■■■■■■ more like 400   come from scotland which was white with the t45 logo and strips in blue
used to lugg spuds round the country.

i converted a couple to 6x2 for my uncle

remembered, dave walker

My 2nd truck was an interstater reg E245 or something similar it was plain White with the eminox up the back of the cab, it had a 320 ■■■■■■■■ with twin splitter box, my gaffs bought it off Geoff Simpson in exhall Coventry who had two for sale at the time, the other was a 350 we found out after. Loved driving it, it went well and sounded great. Only problem we had was brittle wiring Which kept coming away from connectors especially behind the headlights.

They were bought out by Turners (Soham) Ltd.

Not really much difference in basic design, later pump settings and injectors gave improved economy. The TL12 was dropped because of the economics of producing relatively small quantities, proprietary engines such as ■■■■■■■ and Rolls Royce were cheaper.

You hear mixed reviews of the TL12, some operators had reliability problems, most operators thought they were very good engines and capable of high mileages before needing attention. The late Pat Kennet rated them very highly in his Leyland (World Trucks Series) book.

me &my road train tl12 when fitted in t45 it was called tl12 flexitorque pity they spelled my name wrong–alan
