Was 340 the biggest engine RR made for trucks, not including Heavy Haulage motors?
The 340 was the largest they made before the take-over by Perkins, then it was re-worked and became the 800 series Perkins. Think they topped out at 410 with that motor.

Doe’s anyone remember ‘Barbers of Oughtibridge’ they used to have a fistful of Roadtrains on the ACL contract out of Seaforth/Felixstowe. IIRC they were all painted different stripey colours and all had the air deflector kit fitted. I think they were all new B & C reg with the 320 ■■■■■■■ and what’s really weird is that around 92/93 Barbers got some of the NETTO contract out of the old United Carriers depot at Gildersome, Leeds and I did some agency work for them and ended up using one of the old Roadtrains! They must have been nearly 10yrs old by then but still went like the proverbial s** off a shovel.
I do have some photos and as soon as I find & scan them they will be up on here.
I remember those, they were black with a different coloured band that went up the side of the cab in line with the windows, I think one of them had a gold stripe, pretty smart looking motors at the time.
I did a trip to Italy in one of the later Roadtrains with the high-datum cab, it had a 325 Perkins/Roller, a twin splitter & what felt like really good brakes after the Transcon I’d had before it, as I remember it was a decent enough motor & i wouldn’t have minded driving it full time, but the money was crap so I got another job.
That mob out of Frome that do the Cheese (Hardings?) had a load of the Interstate model & they looked really smart
Here’s one I came across at Lymm about 10 years or so ago:-

Hardings fleet did look very smart.
Blue cabs, red chassis and cream trailers IIRC and always kept clean.
Are they still around?
hello everyone
i have a friend who is searching for a leyland roadtrain cab it needs to be able to fit over a ■■■■■■■ engine and also needs to be in fairly good condition (not that there are many roadtrains cabs about that havent fallen to bits) he will pay good money.
if anyone knows of any roadtrain cabs avaulable please contact me
plus me and my dad will be appearing at Gaydon vintage rally in warwickshire soon in the roadtrain so if anybody wants to come and have a look at it closely they are more than welcome to come along.

Hi
There were 3 at the The Great North Road Rally at Newark over the bank holiday weekend.
The Interstate stood next to a flat cab350 chargecooled that was still working out of Lincs, sorry no pic, and the Scammell was ex RAF used for pulling radar units.

hi thanks for replying but i was at that show my dad owns the roadtrain interstate and the one parked next to it was kevin dennis’ of wainfleet, skegness and the grey one was a chap whos name i didnt catch but he did tell me of a place that would have a scammel badge that would replace the leyland one on the front of my dads lorry because it is technically a scammel because the chassis is scammel but the cab is a replacement cab which jack ford from darley dale and the cab is the original cab that was parked outside leyland works which makes it a leyland cab.

this one is from truckfest around 90-91
i drove this truck when Robert international had it, it was painted in a style to the Peter Roff trucks, then John Dee group took over and the next time i saw her she was painted like this.

my dad is the current owner of C66FAF the leyland roadtrain that used to be owned by conway baileys. it started life of working for dingles down in cornwall and then it got bought by conway’s and stayed there for some time until it was bought by Jack Ford in derbyshire. The current cab that is now on the roadtrain is the exact cab that was parked outside of the Leyland works at Leyland and the chassis came from scammel from watford. The running gear is a 14 litre 320 BHP Big cam ■■■■■■■ engine twinned with a Fuller 8 speed gearbox and a Rockwell back axle which was fitted by Conways in place of the noisey Leyland axles. When Jack Ford passed away Kevin Dennis from Wainfleet sold the lorry in Jacks favour to my dad who has now owned it for 3 years. This is all i know for the history of the lorry if anyone has anymore information regarding it please could you get in touch and tell me because we would like to know the full history of this inovative lorry.thanks
If your dad is Chris then I have no doubt that the truck is in good shape. He really knows how to look after a vehicle, does Sniffer. Shame he couldn’t get one of Brians old Leylands. B759 DAV would have been favourite I reckon.
You driving now, Stevie? Runs in your veins, so to speak.
I spent many a night in Vale, Bridgewater watching Conway Baileys Roadtrains heading north, but I wonder who was quicker, CB or the A Team…?

hi no my dad isnt chris. he never worked that far down south. i am not driving yet as i am too young i still got 4 more years to go.
Another Steve Knight then…
Never mind. That good old Roadtrain is Cornish plated and still running… See, Cornwall makes them to last…
I remember when the T45 Roadtrain range was released in 1979 the first models were day cab only,a popular conversion at the time was to have them fitted with a folding bunk that was folded up behind the seats when not in use.I also remember the then British Leyland heralding it as a truck to take on the world.
Would I be right in saying the last Roadtrains were fitted with DAF engines & ZF transmissions rebranded as the Leyland DAF 80 series? I recall the former Inter-City Transport depot of TDG in ■■■■■■■■■■■ run a few of this model as did Munro Transport (Aberdeen).I also heard they were pretty good trucks in this final guise.
My only venture in driving Leyland Roadtrains was a trailer repair company in Broxburns recovery artic,it being an D reg 265 Rolls-Royce Eagle with a 10sp Spicer transmission & my thoughts were it was ok. I drove numerous Freighters & Constructors though & I found the TL II engined 6 wheeler tippers brilliant ,especially off-road.
A company i worked for had an 8 wheeler full width cabbed Constructor fitted with a 265 RR Eagle it was useless you had to put the headlights out in case it saw a hill coming!
Cheers guys

Spot on. The Roadtrain made it up to 1993 as the Daf 80, before the 85 came in.

Stephen,If your Dad’s Roadtrain was originally owned by Dingles, then i think i have a photo of it,brand new,on the Leyland dealers stand at The Royal Cornwall Show.
The photo, along with some others of mine,is posted in the ‘Cornish Companies’ thread, kindly posted for me by Bubbleman.
slight correction there rivit, the early roadtrain full width restcabs all came out of the factory with that fold up bunk, it was an option on the Constuctor8 version though.

yes i believe i have seen it a friend of mine found it it is hooked up to a low loader. it could be the chassis but it will not be the same cab because the cab we have is the original cab from outside leyland works.
A couple of nice un’s for this thread
Also I’ve just put the T45 brochure on here viewtopic.php?f=35&t=51362&p=728953#p728953
