found the article in truck about the interstate still running mag datednov2000 will post it up
my dad is the current owner of C66FAF the leyland roadtrain that used to be owned by conway baileys. it started life of working for dingles down in cornwall and then it got bought by conway’s and stayed there for some time until it was bought by Jack Ford in derbyshire. The current cab that is now on the roadtrain is the exact cab that was parked outside of the Leyland works at Leyland and the chassis came from scammel from watford. The running gear is a 14 litre 320 BHP Big cam ■■■■■■■ engine twinned with a Fuller 8 speed gearbox and a Rockwell back axle which was fitted by Conways in place of the noisey Leyland axles. When Jack Ford passed away Kevin Dennis from Wainfleet sold the lorry in Jacks favour to my dad who has now owned it for 3 years. This is all i know for the history of the lorry if anyone has anymore information regarding it please could you get in touch and tell me because we would like to know the full history of this inovative lorry.
thanks
If it was owned by Conway, you have got a flyer.
Baileys have owned many Roadtrains over the years, all 6x2’s that were kept very well and would outrun virtually anything on the road once they had been ‘tweaked’.
this one is languishing in a friend of a friends recovery yard
that symbol on the cab is a bus company cant think which one though !

yes the Roadtrain does outrun pretty much everything that ison the road. it is unrestricted and we have had a gd 80MPH out of it with still more pedal to go to be honest.
do you perhaps know anymore history about the lorry because me and my dad would love to know its full history.
I took all these pictures in the last 5 months – the tar sprayers are attached to Multidrive trailers
at Gaydon
for sale…
still in use with Colas
beheaded
still in use
another sprayer

i seem to remember a version of the roadtrain interstate cab at the earls court motor show on a heavy haulage unit that looked like a ‘longline’. it had been extended back so it had bench seating (converting to beds) and a table.was this a one off? cannot think if many were done but it was a huge cab.bob.

Leicster Heavy Haulage ran a simular big cab Scammell S26, and ALE had also had one. I remember Tony Morgan in south Wales ran one, this may have been the same unit Leicsters had. Somewhere on this site is a picture of that yellow S26 at the show, just cant think where!
Hello, heres one with a long cab
Cheers Bubbs.

I don’t know the history of that particular vehicle but, working for Baileys,it would have been kept busy hauling farm produce from Cornwall to wholesale markets all over the country and backloading agriculture related products aswell on curtainsiders and flats.
I think Baileys had as many as twelve Roadtrains running at one time but as far as i know they’re all gone now, certainly off the road anyway.
ERF’s replaced the Leylands which are now being replaced by DAF 105’s.There is also a few Foden Alphas on the road.
A few years ago there was a single Renault Premium which was bought, apparently, because the Renault dealer offered by far the best trade in price on the last couple of Roadtrains.
Most,if not all the Roadtrains, were tweaked well above the 320 on the badge.
The amount of people who used to ask,“whose the crowd with the orange Roadtrains down your way?”
There wasn’t much that would stay with them, partly because of the performance and partly because the blokes that drove them seemed to have no fear of driving 38tons as fast as possible.
One of them was coming home on the M5 around Weston Super Mare one day and was overtaken by a fire engine on a call, blue lights, sirens etc.
Not to be outdone, the driver cogged down, floored it and went past the Fire Engine doing well over 80!
Has your unit still got the eminox stack that was fitted to them all?
When pulling or when slowing on theJake brake, they sounded fantastic.

yes our one still has the eminox stack fitted to it but we could really do with a new one because it is in a very bad shape since it was hit with a trailer i am guessing and the chrome cover that is on it does not say eminox it actually says Wasey. Plus the jake brake no longer works on it because it has been disconnected which is a shame really because it would be good to hear it through the exhaust stack.
Has anyone got the picture of the Popemobile, it was a cabriolet version in maroon livery
Hi Wheel nut
The cabriolet was built by someone just for a bit of publicity, was on a thread on here a while back, think its in Keighley now, blue & white, being restored.
If i remember rightly, the popemobile was based on a constuctor 6, all white, think its in a museum somewhere ?

I have a picture(maybe two) of this one and got to sit in the drivers seat when it was on the Leyland dealers stand at the Royal Cornwall Show in the mid eighties.I was around twelve at the time.
It had a white leather interior IIRC and was badged as a 17-34 i think.
Would that have been a RR engine?
I’m afraid i don’t know how to post photos.
The Popemobile is in the British Commercial Vehicle Museum in Leyland, or it was last September.
Saw a green one on the A5 at Muckley corner parked up on Sunday coupled to a low loader looked like ex Army and had the standard sleeper cab
and I didn’t have my camera
