EDTRUCK:
I apologise up front if I am having a memory fade moment - didnt Pickfords Heavy Haulage run some Marathon 6x4 tractors with ■■■■■■■ 335 engines - any pictures to back up my vague memories would be appreciated. Im sure sammyopsite would know!!
Any good?
Pickfords had few 6x4 Marathons which were used as artics and as ballast box tractors Lincoln and Leicester depots had them and a few more but I had left when they arrived and I am sure there was one at Sheffield but it may have only been there temporally
I think ive mentioned this before , i could never understand why AEC never went down the same path as Scania, with the Marathon cab , if they lowered it they could have used it right through the range , in its normal form it wasnt far off being a walk thru cab so there was plenty of scope to drop it down quite a bit just like the 80 - 81 / 110 - 111 Scania cabs ,having said that it was `73 when it was introduced so they probably knew the writing was on the wall
Marathon fans may like to know that on my LHD Seddon-Atkinson 400s thread, I have posted TRUCK mag’s July 1978 Euro Test which includes a Marathon 2 with LHD, TL lump and Fuller 9-speed 'box. Robert
Correct gingerfold the Marathon was engineered and built at the AEC factory Southall and later some were later produced at the Guy plant in Wolverhampton and at the 74 commercial show they were exhibited on the AEC stand they had the TL12 engine fitted an engine developed from the AV760

I think the last ones were built at the Scammell factory at Watford , and some were fitted with the L12 engine for the oil companies
just a thought drove a marathon during my time at tankfreight was an all right motor but just a day cab i remember taking it somewhere to have a swing down bunk fitted to it when folded it folded up into the roof of the cab ! not the biggest cab cant remember where i had it fitted but sheer joy my first sleeper cab i was on shell chems at the time so pet regs no windows in the back just nice steel plates instead to freeze your ■■■ off in the winter these where the days before night heaters. Happy days think it was a ■■■■■■■ engine definately a fuller gear box it was replaced with a Y reg daf 2800 so a few years back
