Leyland Lorries

Heres another of Lees leylands, Simon lee is sat on the trailer.

Here’s a few Clydesdales on our yard at Longford, on the left of the picture is CTV 296T bought new by my dad, John Wakefield, in the middle is CTV 280T which was bought new by Denis Salt, I worked as a mechanic for Denis at the time and bought this lorry of his son Gavin who had taken it over by 1987, it is loaded with insulation board from Heysham Dock for delivery to Leicester, a return load I picked up after tipping Blackpool, I can still remember thinking “is it worth the £80 haulage rate” as my sheets were blowing away towards the Irish Sea.The sleeper cab version on the right of the picture LBO 29X was a vehicle I bought, painted, but never ran. I went to a breakers yard one Sunday morning for a piece of exhaust pipe and ended up coming home with LBO 29X. This picture and many more of our families transport photos can be seen on my website wakefieldsoflongford.co.uk

Aye Walter was a good lad, He worked for Walker Bros, Newburn ,He worked for us about 9 years he was very reliable & trustworthey, He got the Freighter F 851 MVK. Brand new. I dont know if he is still alive, we allways got a Xmas card from him after he retired but not this time, I called at his house but I was told by the Lady living there that she didnt know of his whereabouts. Regards Larry.

Here are a couple of Leylands at the yard of Denis Salt of Longford, the Reiver KUE 526 V in the foreground had just been painted ready for the road after being purchased from Tarmac, Cauldon Lowe. In the background can just be seen a Clydesdale BRE 476 T which had also been in the paint shop. Both these lorries ran in Ballidon Quarry near Ashbourne around 1985/6. Denis ran all types of lorries over the years he also ran a lorry repair business and at one time had a coal round, he also tried his hand at the licensed trade when he ran The Wheatsheaf pub in Wirksworth.

Very smart Leylandsto say the least, Im a Leyland man myself ran a few of them ourselves & had good service from all of them, This Reiver was terrific it never once let us down it did local & ditance work all the time with a 17 Tonne Plus Payload & good on fuel, Regards Larry.

Would this motor qualify to be on this thread Larry ? I took this photo just prior to setting off to Rochester with it’s first load,I was still waiting for our first two York trailers to be finished at Corby and the one the “Leyland” is coupled to is one York loaned me while they built the new ones.I could get 10 MPG out of this motor if you drove it canny like, which I did !!! Cheers Dennis.

Jogged my memory that last shot so I had another dig and this is a side shot of the loaded trailer,The front main and the fly sheet are off my D1000 which I’d just sold to a geezer in Kent and the cheeky ■■■■■■■ tried to get the two sheets for his “Luck Penny” !,the rear main is a brand new one so no “water ingress” there then !! The 33ft York trailer was out of their hire fleet and it was only on 900x20 tyres, but they were fairly new and MICH X so OK ! Cheers Dennis.

Of course it would Dennis , the owld Leylands were good owld workhorses I have a lot of friends who ran them , OK WE did have some minor probs, But it was nowt compared to what other hauliers were fronted with, I could mention lots of fellow Haulage operaters, Who tried the Imported Gear, But quite a lot of them were very dissapointed with the end result , mind you this was in the 60s, & I must be honest the Imported gear did get bet very quickley, & Did make an impact on the British Manufactures, Big Time, Sad But Very True, Regards Larry.PS, Anyway Dennis I will be driving a 1943 K2 Austin a this weekend the 21st Oct, at Brunton Show, With the courtesy Of Colin Hogg, (Murray Hogg Transport Ltd.), Regards Larry
