Hi Andrew,
Could have sworn it was BP on the A5 couple of miles further up from Crick I took it, anyway hey ho, who cares as long as we enjoy the pics & can have a chat about the past! Is this the same Marathon as you saw in last shot? Surname not too clear on the door but looks like her!
Regards Chris
hi chris,
you are right.the old bp truckstop at cifton-on dunsmore?we always called it crick.right again, that is chris’ marathon.i don’t think he has a truck now?have’nt seem him in the shows for ages, last saw him when i was in malta last year.you have some great photos ,i remember the cannon volvo’s coming through pyle when they used to load coal from parc slip.
regards andrew.
I think Chris only has his Atki Borderer now. The F88 he bought and restored he sold to someone in Ireland. He has been to the last couple of Gaydon shows but only as a visitor and not with a vehicle.
Great photographs on this thread…anyone have any of the coalville area firms…?..I ve seen a couple of bexton and smiths and a couple of foden tippers from the early sixties from cliff hill granite (scrapbook memories) .Other than that very slim pickings…nobody seem to take pictures of their trucks in those days.
[attachment=1]Couple more Leicester ones. The LPP hand ball was hard work with just a trolley and taillift.Didn"t the owner suffer a bad fall on a night out and died from his injuries?Maybe i’m getting mixed up.
Some great memories on this page and some great photos. I always remember Moores of Ashby as we had a daily job into the biscuit factory. Coates was ■■■■■■■ with Firmin Coates I believe.
My spurious link to fame in Leicestershire was actually started in Lincolnshire
I was driving a TK Bedford for United Carriers and delivered some engine parts to Cossington Commercials and the bloody thing broke down in their yard, it just wouldn’t start again. They got it in their workshop and spent about 5 hours on it, it had snapped the injector pump drive However when I got it back the ERF rep and the Dealer Principle were there and for my trouble they gave me a limited edition ERF Rally Jacket. I was quite proud to own that, especially since our managers at UCL never got any free gifts although the whole fleet was ERF or Bedford, both of which Cossington sold.

i remember lpp well they used to pick the cardboard bales up from sainsburys supermarkets,i think the picture of the fl10 was taken at the lincoln branch of sainsburys, the one where you had to reverse up a pedrestion area then up the side of a pub to get in sainsburys yard, the last time i went there must have been about 17 yrs ago.
I only did a bit of casual for LPP before i went on Drapergrain self employed. There was 2 of you in a truck but the other guy(think his name was Cyril)didn,t have a hgv licence. The picture of the Widdowson’s was when i took it for the annual test.
And well spotted Rich,it is Lincoln. In a day you would do something like Loughboro’ Derby Nott’s Hull Grimsby Lincoln. Always ran out of hours when i did that run.I think the other run was a bit easier.
Apologies for the quality, but these are scans direct from negs, must get the photos reprinted and scanned
Geoff Rhodes Ex Crouchs Scammell @ BP Truckstop Crick
I know Crouch’s are still going, but RW Gent’s Diamond T next to it, not heard them mentioned?
Badger Bros Crusader at their yard, now covered in houses!
Geoff Rhodes Scammell again at his yard, again now a housing estate
John Holman now spends his time playing with Caterpillar Crawlers, but this was back in the day when he ran his Foden/King low loader
A pair of John Wards trucks at Crick
Crowsons still going? Taken at a Truckfest
John Hicks ran out of Husbands Bosworth, can only remember his magnum, but must have had something prior to this? Now shows a restored berliet army truck
Pallets @ Truckfest
Hallmark Tractors, still going, but not as big as the old days
Excellent pics there wardg.
I recall John Holman, used to have an ERF before the foden, think he even had one of those old square ERFs like what John Ward had. Also remember Gents, were’nt they from shepshed, used to park in Andy Sherwoods truckstop J23. Theres still one of Gents old flat top F10s in an old yard near the railway bridge on the road from zouch to wymeswold !
I m suprised that pallettes are still going are they the farmers from nailstone ? they had a mixed fleet in the 1950s and 1960 s did a lot of brick hauling if my memory serves me right.

Wardg,i think J Holman’s ERF was a B series day cab(GunnerH will remember).
A couple of pic’s of J Simmons Foden at work.
The quarry one is at Furnace, between Inverary and Lochgilphead,West of Scotland. The other at Cairndow after crossing the “Rest And Be Thankfull” on a 30degree day at 65ton,1993 or 1994,can’t quite remember.
John lives in Norfolk now,his Rothley yard has houses built on it now.Familiar story eh■■?
TOP bloke to work for,all the time in the world to teach you a tiny bit of what he knows about heavy haulage.
P.S. Pallet’s used to own the two tone green Peterbilt on the “Shropshire Truck show 2011” thread.

I worked for pinnacle for years I drove the F88 VFP621S and then CNR276T F10 then I had YFP490Y the first Merc 1633 twin turbo in the country then B290JRA a MAN 321, they had 3 16ton mercs 2 17 ton MANs and the first MAN 361 in the country plus a 7.5 ton fiat and a 7.5 tom MAN and a LT35 van that we all use to fight over to go abroad in, the good old days. B752GRC MAN 321 was on the Zeebrugger ferry that went down and my uncle Jeff the curlly hard Jordie was driving it and he is my uncle by marrige and now works for Stobarts bless him, I cannot remember when NT Motors packed in what a impeckable fleet as I remember them spotless. CNR276T I bought when Pinnicle sold it and kept it untill mid 90’s I could not bear to see it go, the F88 was written off in Spain and do not know what happened to the others, the early days were Charlie,Mick,Polly, Kev,Speaky and then much later was colin, Jeff and then I lost touch, I have some pictures but do not know how to get them on here.

How long ago was NT motors in littlethorpe? I lived in Cosby from 81 and only moved to broughton astley 5 years ago and can’t picture them!
As for pm rucks, they went under several times, one of our drivers worked for them right to the end when they’re erf’s looked like they were in palletforces colours. I’ll see if he has any pics when I see him next.
Also pinnacle international freight if it’s the one in narborough, is owned by a friends dad, who himself is a director, I’ll see if he has any, but I’m sure they only really run 7.5’s
Think NT Motors finished about 27/30yrs ago,
Venture forwarding took over Rucks transport who themselves were in with palletforce, hence the colour scheme.
Be great if you could speak with your friends dad to see if he has any priceless pics of the Pinnacle fleet. When i first passed my test in 1990 that was the first firm i drove an artic for, a B-reg M.A.N in the old blue colour scheme just before they went silver with dark blue lettering. I also used to work for AML Transport of wigston and we used to do a hell of a lot of traction for Pinnacle, including change overs at dover when they used to turn there drivers back round. I always remember one of their drivers, a geordie lad, curly hair, good laugh too.
Hi all,Jeff is on Stobarts,he was on the telly not so long ago,I knew him well,he’s been on Stobart pretty much since Pinnacle folded.Lovely man.

Hi wardg, you mention Frank R Sandham, he had 2 ERF artics and 1 iveco 4 wheeler, they used to park up at treetops bruntingthorpe. At the time i was on for AML Transport and when Frank Sandham finished we bought a unit and trailer XRY 836Y with a 290 ■■■■■■■ in it. His lad Andre R Sandham drove the other E355 SRY. I actually had the pleasure of driving XRY 836Y for a couple of months. Remember seeing Neil Harbys turbostar and scanny. White with blue writing.

Not got those 2 Sandhams, the only 2 on my records are HPV 191Y & E340 LAY, still depended on what was passing by when I was doing my paperround! Neil Harbys Ivecos were pretty much like the demonstrator livery, I’ve got noted G499 BVN, G821 APY, H305 EAY & M716 HRY (Eurotech); Scania’s L12 TLS & L993 HDC and even a Foden H123 RWJ
