I mentioned the Twin-splitter gearknob on LHD: now I come to think of it, I have used one in a LHD lorry and the thumb-switch was on the left hand side of the knob, just as you would expect!

If it’s any consolation, quite a lot of drivers have problems adjusting from RHD to LHD and vice versa. I remember on Breda Transport, a very experienced (and very skilful) Dutch driver switched to John Mann and had to drive a RHD artic from Sleaford to Casablanca in Morocco. When I met him in the docks in Tangiers, he told me that he’d hit every [zb] kerb between UK and North Africa! Robert

Who was the driver,Rob?

I can’t remember his name. We were having a jar in the Yacht Club bar (before it was demolished) in Tangier port when he told me. He was a bit of a character, and claimed to be descended from native Americans. He also claimed to have driven to Calcutta for Dutch Shell. Nice bloke. Robert

Wasn’t Rudy,was it?

No.

No.

You’re lucky. There used to be a Rudy working in Basel who claimed to be Austrian, but his English was too good and sounded like Dutch way of talking. He was always getting fired for aggressive behavior. Years later I was in a transport hub in Coventry when I clocked him driving an Irish rig. I hid up and never seen him again.
