here is a left hand gearbox…walk away whistling!!!0Whut on earth is that from, an old ERF or something?! For some reason have the name Spicer in my head - am I warm?
They were bad, but not that bad. Er, clue’s in the 9th gear location on that pic. Don’t panic. Think you’ll find it’s probably a bit of fiction, either that or from a lorry that squirts water when you toot the horn, blows puffs of smoke out of the exhaust, the doors fall off and all the clowns fall out.

It aint from any “old ERF” I’ve ever driven, and it aint a Spicer either, only thing that I’ve used that could be quite confusing,( ok not as bad as the one we are on about) was the old back to front/upside down Fuller in the Sed Atk 400. The days when truck driving was a series of skills when you needed a bit more than just arms and legs to drive them .
But I reckon I’ll be talking a foreign language to some of the Auto box truckers on here.
As for left ■■■■■■ gear changes you just use the other hand
Yes robroy the Seddon box was quite an experience for the first two or three days especially if in traffic and you were trying to quickly think what one you needed and where the hell was in that back side foremost set up. Eddie.
" left hand drive gears"…says it all really…
No such thing as left-hand-drive gears, but someone mentioned the Twin-splitter in a LHD lorry. The thumb switch would need to be on the left side of the gear-knob (not the right) to make life comfy. I’ve driven on fleets which had both RHD and LHD lorries and you soon learn to switch from one to another pretty effortlessly. The only gearbox I can think of that felt different was Scania’s old 10-speed 'box, which had a dog-leg 1st/6th position. In a LHD Scania this was much nicer to use because you pulled the lever towards you for the dog-leg instead of away from you. I am right-handed but I do have a preference for left-hookers. It’s what you feel comfortable with in the end. Robert

Point taken, Irish Lorries. I can see where you’re coming from. From memory, it’s simply a matter of getting used to it; after all, it’s just a skill like anything else involving truck-driving. You’ll be fine after a short while. Robert

Thanks for the advice I never had bother with any rhd lorry but have never drove a lhd since that 164
I used to change gears for my dad when I was a kid.
So I’m ambi gearshift.
You could always try reversing the drivers seat and put a great big mirror on the rear of the cab to see where you are going! We had a LHD Bedford TK sweeper and I only drove it occasionally but didn’t have a problem with the gears, road positioning was a different matter though as I kept drifting across the centre of the road! I also worked on a dual drive BMC sweeper which had two steering wheels and that took some getting used to as the LHD position had a central throttle pedal as well.
Pete.

Hahaha
I mentioned the Twin-splitter gearknob on LHD: now I come to think of it, I have used one in a LHD lorry and the thumb-switch was on the left hand side of the knob, just as you would expect!
If it’s any consolation, quite a lot of drivers have problems adjusting from RHD to LHD and vice versa. I remember on Breda Transport, a very experienced (and very skilful) Dutch driver switched to John Mann and had to drive a RHD artic from Sleaford to Casablanca in Morocco. When I met him in the docks in Tangiers, he told me that he’d hit every [zb] kerb between UK and North Africa! Robert

Who was the driver,Rob?
Having never driven any LHD Vehicle, I always imagined the gears would be spun over so they played the same as they would on a RHD (Work towards yourself). Guess I’ve learned something

I can’t remember his name. We were having a jar in the Yacht Club bar (before it was demolished) in Tangier port when he told me. He was a bit of a character, and claimed to be descended from native Americans. He also claimed to have driven to Calcutta for Dutch Shell. Nice bloke. Robert
