Left-Hand Drive B-series ERFs

Greek B series.JPG

Looking closer at this magnificent specimen of a LHD Greek B-series ERF, I notice that it has roof-mounted air-con and visor; a roof mounted light-bar with Michelin men; an unorthodox under-run bumper to accommodate the fogs and spots; and ■■■■■■■ badges (reassuring!). The registration number is TE 2530 and the legend on the headboard reads, Patavalis-Charatsis, Volos GR (and a telephone number). I am surprised by the small fuel tank, but assume that there is one on the other side. The trailer is a Crane-Freuhauf tri-axle with a water carrier, box and wheel-carrier slung underneath. Neat. These two appear to be the same unit. Certainly, the first one (with the box) was identified by a blogger who has contacted me to say that he thinks he recognizes this as DVT 979T, the LHD B-series ERF Albert Dale replaced his 7MW-cabbed NGC 420 ‘European’ with. He believes it to have had a ■■■■■■■ 320 lump. If this is the one, then Andrew Thompson set up on his own with it in the Stoke-on-Trent area. Robert

We also know, courtesy of Michel who provided the bottom photo in the first place, that it was Swiss registered. This links it even more closely with Albert Dale. Any further info on this? Here are the pictures again. Robert

What happened to that lovely picture, taken in Belgium I think, of some gentlemen gathered in front of a Continental B-series ERF? I can’t remember what company it was, or who posted it; and I didn’t ‘save’ it so it has gone… Robert

Here?

ERF-Continental:
Here?

That’s the one, A-J! Brilliant! You can just imagine one of them saying, ‘Let’s slip down the Route National 10 at Poitiers and have a leisurely lunch at Vivonne. Then you can run into Bordeaux for your load of wine and I can carry on and tip in Dax in the morning…’

Cheers! Robert

Were you the photographer them overhearing that wining- and dining-plan?

Pictured are the 4th, 5th and 6th generation

Ah! So between them, they would certainly have driven some very interesting old lorries from the unique Van Steenbergen fleet! Robert

Happy New Year! Here is a nice clear version of the Eric Vick pic from my collection. Robert

And here is an '80s truck advert for LHD B-series ERFs! Robert

This mirror image came up on the Trans Arabia thread today. Fleet No. 120, so one of the 13speed 290s. Robert

More LHD B-series pics scenes from Saudi. Do read the stories that go with these on both the Taseco thread and the Trans Arabia thread. Robert

More pics of Vermeulen’s 6x4 LHD B-series which seems to have spent more time being a ballasted tractor than a tractive unit. Pictures are courtesy of the Dutch photographer, Leo Mes. Robert

Cheers Anorak! We have a couple of Van Rumpt ERF pics on this thread, but the site is well worth a visit to explore. Robert

Jerry Cooke sent me this picture of EWR112Y, which if you remember was originally a 4x2 unit with Millfield. Later it acquired a tag-axle and ended up with Nick Bull who used it on Middle-East recovery work. This picture is interesting. Jerry and I were chatting on the phone this morning and reckon that it was probably taken before Nick Bull took it over. Nonetheless, it had a Middle-East export style double bumper when both Millfield and Nick Bull had it, so the picture could still post date Nick having it. Note what looks like an F12 air intake behind the cab. It also has a huge fuel tank and head-lamp stone-guards so its clearly going somewhere interesting. Would the Mirlin reference have anything to do with Wirlinmirlin by any remote chance? The headboard shows a name Jerry believes is still going today. Any further thoughts on this intriguing picture? Robert

Here it is in its other guises:

Just a note to say that I’ll be ‘off-line’ for a brief while.

In the meantime, let me leave you with this magnificent picture of that Greek B-series, now in my collection, to keep you going. Dunno who took the photo.

Robert

Here’s another little pictorial feast for LHD B-series fans, posted by ‘Ronhawk’ on the Trans Arabia thread. Trans Arabia 117 pictured in the 2nd pic had a ■■■■■■■ 290 and 13-speed Fuller. Robert

On other ERF-threads there is a vivid discussion on the E-series which is quite something else
than the NTCE290-series installed in for example the Van Steenbergen’s B-series, with their
registrations 94.HC.9 and L.768.M from 1977. The ■■■■■■■ N-series (14 litre) is dating from
1960 and most recent existence of the NTCE290 is from july 1976.

Just to clarify: you mean E-series ■■■■■■■ not E-series ERF, don’t you! You make a good point. Was the NTCE290 still a small-cam engine? Robert

Yes (small cam) and made in Shotts Lanarkshire!
