I used to deliver reels of paper from Blyth Harbour imported from Finland, One firm was called Pettys Near Holbeck Lane ■■, Plus Waddingtons, & The Yorkshire Press that I mentioned earlier on, I wonder if they are still in business to-day ?, Regards Larry.

It’s there but it’s not called Pettys now but the grey cells won’t change up a gear this morning so I can’t remember the name. It’s a huge 24hr operation now, always a queue of motors at either end of the works, reels in at one end, finished product out at the other.

It’s called polestar but everyone still calls it Pettys , we take reels in there and pick up magazines can be a nightmare when busy.

yep loaded out of there myself years a go ,tipped reels nr York, not a good place to find if you do not know leeds ,keith

Aye the place next door to it Readmans I think, They sell clothes etc, The manager used to complain about the artics waiting to tip causing a problem for his customers getting on to their car park, The git used to phone the traffic Wardens office & they would send one of their smart arsed gits along & tell the drivers to move otherwise they would be handed a PT, Well I was there when this occurred, So I asked the TW, What was the problem as there was plenty of room for the cars to get past, But of course he wasn’t having any of that he said if I didn’t move he would give me a PT, so I said well Im on a break so I cant move for another 20 mins, He totally ingnored my reply & wrote a PT out, So I asked him If he had any brains, He just smiled as I f he was enjoying himself I came very close to giving him a slap, But being a hard working owner driver I controlled my feelings, I then said well now you ■■■■ I have the PT, what do I do, He said Oh well you can stop there as long as you like HA HA , Now wheres the bloody logic in that Eh, Mind you I appealed to the Head Office in Leeds & The PT was cancelled, Regards Larry.

The “Parking Attendants” ( they don’t call them TW’s anymore) have managed to kill Dewsbury. It’s not far short of a ghost town now due almost entirely to these people. :imp:

Hi guy’s, this a great page, every-one looking back on the old day’s and using memories to bring back old fiends and companies, just like Kieth did for A1 Transport a few years ago, and it’s a creddit to him that we’ve all been able to remind ourselves of what great days they were and bring people together just like he did with the A1 page but sadly those days will never come back which is a shame considering that today is over-regulated by people in Westminster and Brussels.
I’ve been looking at some of the messages from you guy’s and one in particular was the one about “Dunlop & Rankin”, I was working for Chapmans at the time in Bradfrod doing London trunk but one night I had to do the shunt from Dunlop & Rankin loading trailors since at the time we had the contract for them, I had loaded a trailor with every shape of steel you could think of, RSJ’s plate, and bit’s and pieces on top, Quite a few drops for some unfortunate driver, there was also some 40ft RSJ’s on top of some plate, when the checker looked he said the plate on front had to come off because it had been delivered, so off came the RSJ’s then the grab’s came down to pick up the 7 ton of plate, I was still stood on the trailor when they were over 6ft up in the air, then down they came so fast they brushed down my arm and one of the grabs hit me square on the face smashing my nose as flat as a frying pan, and the next thing I knew I was in an ambulance on my way to LGI, but when I came out nothing happened because when enquiries started for some “compo”, the foreman had left, the other workers on that night shift had left, and my claim came to absolutely “Nothing”, the union wasnt interested so I gave up trying, but that was when we worked for a living instead of how things are today, too many rules and regulations.
Kind regards to you all for the memories, :-Jack

Hi “Grumpy old man”, I have only seen one “traffic warden” in 3 years where I now live, I lived almost all my life in the Bingley area and worked out of Bradford and Leeds, and 3 years ago I moved to a place “which is a state secret” where there are no speed cameras, no traffic lights free parking except for a parking disk, but even the disk isnt used much because traffic wardens are like “hen’s teeth”, which is why I’ve only seen one in 3 years and all he was doing was checking people had paid on the only parking place there was in my area.
Looking back on my life I wish I’d moved many years ago, but that’s in hindsight and now it’s too late, but I can assure you it’s like living in heaven now I’m an old git and retired, when I go back to see my kids it’s like going into a foreign country, and talk about traffic and things there are more speed cameras than before more traffic lights, and the place is run by foreigners of every race, one thing I always do is carry my passport with me just in case I need it to get back into the Bradford area, but it’s nice to come back and see some of my old mates from years ago, may-be we could have a reunion of drivers like we had with A1 Transport for a couple of years, it brings back old driving palls together and have a few pints and spill some “diesel” on the floor and have a laugh about old times, it’s good to use your old memory once in a while especialy when were all together, it’s good for every-one and give’s us something to laugh about.
Kind Regards :-Jack
PS, they only call them “Parking Attendents” to make them feel important because they cant get a job doing anything else.

Dewsbury used to be a fine old market town, now it’s the gateway to Asia and Eastern Europe (you know what I mean), it’s a hell hole. Wife and myself have lived and worked here all our lives and now, we’re too old to move. Then I think, why the hell should I move, this is my town.

Aye, Ive had meny good breakfasts & dinners at Briggs café, It was one of the good ones in its day, Regards Larry.

Never parked up at Briggs, too near home, but I’ve had the nosebag on there many times. It was a decent caff. All gone now.

Used to be a lady worked at Briggs Cafe called Anne Lockwood, she lives near me now but she has some fond memories of the place. As for the cafe itself, its a housing estate now.

I remember a girl called Anne from when we used to call in at Briggs on the way back from Leeds to Huddersfield for Hansons.
She was a small pretty girl and always good for a laugh with. Say hello from John and Ralph.
