I was a mechanic at Crossroads when it was at Birkenshaw, I started there at 16 and was there about 7 years before moving on to A.One Transport.
The N10 in the picture TUA 666R was the last of the S&R N10s we used to call it the beast , when CBL had it , it was a proper piece of junk that spent more time in bits. We were sure the drivers used to sabotage it as it was in every weekend without fail, I’ve repaired the engine and gearbox on it. The truck was a pain in the arse to repair especially doing the pistons and liners as the back two cylinders w were in the cab and it was awkward to get in . I seem to remember it having a second hand cab fitted off a Hargreaves N10 quarry tipper which was up at the spares yard at Birstall called Bridge Trailers where ikea is now. CBL used to share the yard there.
I seem to remember 2 of the regular Beast drivers were a bloke called Cess and another lad called Chicken legs lol
Gees of Wakefield ended up with 666 R and refurbished it . It did the odd show, I wonder if they still have it ?
Any of you S&R men would know Terry Rayner out of the Rothwell workshops who I got to know well
when he worked for F.Knowles and son in Rothwell, a good old school mechanic who is enjoying
retirement now
And Keith yes your right the pub on the roundabout is called the Halfway House , we used to drink in that and the other up the road called the Golden Fleece now the Birkenshaw. As a Bradford lad I would usually end up in the Holme Lane Tavern on Tong Street which was my neck of the woods and usually had a couple of A.one drivers in and Austin from CBL who used to chain smoke Capstan full strength

Some good memories here chaps. I took my class three HGV in Leeds. United Carriers were at Gildersome Spur but they used Hargreaves Training ground for manoeuvring exercises. We also used the canteen at Burtons on a regular basis. I was only there for 4 nights but became quite familiar with it all. Anoter company I worked for had a 7 day week contract with Yorkshire Chemicals carrying ice from Hull Fish docks to Leeds every day in a Guy Big J tipper.
another baptism of fire was to deliver to the agents who stocked the shelves for Ever Ready Batteries

Oooh, Yorkshire Chem. Black Bull Street, Try reversing an ERF artic, NO POWER STEERING, off the main road and down that narrow yard. Not for the faint hearted. It was usually a late shift job and ALWAYS at rush hour. Black Bull street was/is one way, bloody cars and buses everywhere trying to get past on every side, nigh on impossible job struggling with no power steering but, we did the job.
Hi everybody, Leeds, The Holy City, or String of Beeds, or in CB lingo Circle City, call it what you will. Coming from York I,ve done a fair bit around Leeds and the one thing that sticks in my mind was parking up at the back of the Shaftsbury cinema on the A64 and fiddling home. Did the LDOY at Burtons Tailoring factory on Torre road a few times in the 80s.
Burnt my mouth on a red hot sausage sarny as a lad with my dad in the Cuppa corner cafe during the 50s with his Flowers Transport Commer TS3 parked outside. Used Dunhills on South Accomodation road as well, remember the old girl that used to collect the pots but can’t think of her name !
Dads Commer would have been supplied by Cox the Rootes dealership close to Crown Point bridge more or less next door to Lax & Shaw the glass factory now theres a name from the past.
Also took quite a few coils of steel into Dunlop & Rankins on the A58 and then collected it a few days later as sheets of 8x4 for onward delivery to anywhere.
Sadley like a lot more towns and cities in our fair land most of the old firms and industries have gone, but they are not forgotten !
Regards Tony H

It’s there but it’s not called Pettys now but the grey cells won’t change up a gear this morning so I can’t remember the name. It’s a huge 24hr operation now, always a queue of motors at either end of the works, reels in at one end, finished product out at the other.

It’s called polestar but everyone still calls it Pettys , we take reels in there and pick up magazines can be a nightmare when busy.

The Halfway House is still open but the Golden Fleece has been boarded up for a while now. George the 4th is still open, on route to the holme lane.
