LEEDS

Had a few nights out in Leeds, would have been mid/late 80s when you could use the car park in the city center behind the police station.
Used to backload out of EJ Arnolds, the co that made exercise books/school supplies.

Hi, All
I used to run into Leeds regularly on nights , twice a night onto CrossGreen from Humberside. Many is the night when the first run was like a taxi service for S&R drivers picking them up at Gunness and Hensall and dropping them at Rothwell.
I remember well how Leeds used to shut down,in a manner of speaking , when the Yorkshire Ripper was on the go.It used to be like a ghost town round Marsh Lane and York road area. The police used to pull you and want to know everything about your night. With him on the loose you didn,t mind how many times they stopped you if it helped with catching him.
Twice a night to Leeds for four nights a week, sounds boring but we didn’t use the motorways much and I,d do it again.

Cheers Bassman

I did parcel delivery for Hanson Haulage from Huddersfield to Leeds in the 1960’s for about 4 years. We carried a lot of cloth from the textile industry in Huddersfield to the Tailors and Clothiers of Leeds. We had 3 vans covering Leeds. One did all the outskirts, I started at Pudsey and worked my way in through Armley, Kirkstall Road and up to the station and York Place,(very tight), then past the University and Headingly swinging round to Chapeltown and finishing up at Montague Burtons factory. We had a small Commer cob artic for City Centre deliveries.

Could not help but notice the photograph, obviously with you stood in front of the Volvo N10 and the fact that you mentioned S&R Tankers. I took this photo in 1983 at Crossroads Commercial in Birstall, before the Junction 27 Retail Park. Were CBL any relation to S&R as the colour schemes are similar■■?

My lad works at Crossroads now (ace mechanic of Youtube fame…ace mechanic my ar*e. :unamused: )
Me? I used to deliver fuel oil all over Leeds in the 60/70/80’s. including Burtons. There were some tight spots with an ERF artic with NO power steering.

This topic is like stepping back in time for me, I remember all the firms mentioned, most likely ran fuel oil into most of them
Any of you S&R lads remember David Howram (brother)? he did his apprenticeship there, worked as a fitter and went on to be Gods gift to VOSA.
“If you come near my lorry with your tapping hammer you bar steward I’ll tell our mother” :stuck_out_tongue:
Thankfully he’s retired now, he had a bit of a “reputation”. Bloody power mad.

When I was a drivers mate at Ripponden & District, I was on the Hunslet run,one of about 7 wagons in leeds every day,in1967.
Two or three of the wagons used to meet up at Burtons at dinner time. We used to get our dinner in the huge canteen, I remember it was very cheap and you had to leave a returnable deposit on your cutlery !!
On Fridays,we would have the odd swift half in The Crompton pub opposite.
As has been said,happy days.
Regards John.

Hi Lee,just asked my mate who was the sparky there and he said they moved to birsall in about 94,i think the old crossroads now as houses on it,keith

yes it’s an housing estate now. Iused to play as a kid in the yard on a weekend when it was shut. They always had interesting stuff to play on ! That was when I was about 10 yrs old, I’d still find interesting stuff to play on now though and I’m near on 40!
