I was a mechanic at Crossroads when it was at Birkenshaw, I started there at 16 and was there about 7 years before moving on to A.One Transport.
The N10 in the picture TUA 666R was the last of the S&R N10s we used to call it the beast , when CBL had it , it was a proper piece of junk that spent more time in bits. We were sure the drivers used to sabotage it as it was in every weekend without fail, I’ve repaired the engine and gearbox on it. The truck was a pain in the arse to repair especially doing the pistons and liners as the back two cylinders w were in the cab and it was awkward to get in . I seem to remember it having a second hand cab fitted off a Hargreaves N10 quarry tipper which was up at the spares yard at Birstall called Bridge Trailers where ikea is now. CBL used to share the yard there.
I seem to remember 2 of the regular Beast drivers were a bloke called Cess and another lad called Chicken legs lol
Gees of Wakefield ended up with 666 R and refurbished it . It did the odd show, I wonder if they still have it ?
Any of you S&R men would know Terry Rayner out of the Rothwell workshops who I got to know well
when he worked for F.Knowles and son in Rothwell, a good old school mechanic who is enjoying
retirement now

And Keith yes your right the pub on the roundabout is called the Halfway House , we used to drink in that and the other up the road called the Golden Fleece now the Birkenshaw. As a Bradford lad I would usually end up in the Holme Lane Tavern on Tong Street which was my neck of the woods and usually had a couple of A.one drivers in and Austin from CBL who used to chain smoke Capstan full strength :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

:open_mouth: You went in Holme Lane tavern■■?..and lived to tell the tale■■? that was a very brave thing to do.

they still a old AONE driver in the holme lane at weekends Alex dam lost his last name :unamused: dont knock it i was crawling out of there sat night

mason bros erf in kirkstall forge livery ( off the mason bros thread)

Kirkstall Forge that’s a blast from the past too, I often loaded their for Coles Cranes Sunderland, IIRC There was a good transport café nearby, Regards Larry.

I delivered oil to Kirkstall Forge, I used to watch them stamping out front axles for Volvo. The site now is levelled, I reckon that within 5 years there will be hundreds of new houses on the site, it’s ideal commuting distance for the city centre.
