Do you mean LGV learners? If so they probably have limiter set to 50mph, mine was years ago…

My truck is set to 52 mph
It’s a speed limit not a target
First tell us what sort of vehicle your on about HGV Car van, WHAT
If a learner vehicle is not doing the speed you think it should be doing, whats stopping you overtaking.Limiter maybe.
Did you tear arse around whilst you was under tuition or on a motorway for the first time,or are you one of the “got a licence I can do it all” brigade
Car drivers
Ah, but what was the limit on the road at the time for that vehicle?

I that case they’re not actually learners then are they? They’ve passed their test already and in fairness to them they’ve decided to cough up extra money to receive training on motorway driving. However I do agree that given that they are already full licence holders the instructor should be directing them to (within the speed limit) match the speed of other cars around them. Pointless using an M road at B road speeds.

Wrong, learner drivers can now be taken on motorways. Came in to effect last year.

No true anymore.
Since 4 June, learner drivers have been allowed to drive on the motorway. The changes give learners the option of having lessons on the motorway, should their instructor deem them competent enough to do so.
Wow, live and learn eh?

I think it is exclusively registered driving instructors though, ie an ordinary driver cannot take their kid / wife / girlfriend on the motorway whilst teaching them in a car.

You’re supposed to be a professional driver so easily able to cope with this and you drive a vehicle that is limited to just 6 MPH faster with several companies limiting their lorries to 50MPH anyway (Sainsbury etc).
If they cause you such an issue maybe you should consider going for some driver training.

So if you took a 17 yr old learner on the M25 for what could be their first motorway lesson you’ll tell them to make straight for the 70 mph limit would you ?

No I would not take a learner on the motorway unti they were competent on a dual carriageway at 70 mph
I had no idea they were allowed on the motorway until I read this - almost makes me feel bad for hurling abuse at one the other day!
As has already been stated, learner drivers are allowed on the motorway, only when accompanied by a fully qualified driving instructor in a dual control equipped driving school vehicle.

I also spent some time making sure the pupils were competent at 70mph on dual carriageways. But I did not have the freedom to go on the motorway with L plates then.
Once they passed, I insisted we took a ride on the motorway. Stevenage, A1M, M25, M4, into Heathrow Airport for a coffee then back. Made them sweat…
Cheers

Personally I think car licenses should be graduated more. Only to be allowed use of a motorway after passing basic competency test. Maybe with a minimum time (1 year, perhaps?) on the road before being allowed to apply for a motorway license.
After all, we already have graduated car licenses in principle. You cant just pass the basic test, go home and hitch up your caravan and set off for the highlands of scotchland.
