Knocking a cyclist off his bike
When I first took to the road on a motorbike, pre CBT days, so no training. I got stopped by a bike cop in the first couple of weeks.
He told me to ride further out into the road for the very same reason.
P.S. He wa a top bloke probably saved my life. I’d ridden through a red light but instead of just giving me a fine and letting me go. He gave me a right bollocking about my riding standards, (he’d followed me for sometime  )and then proceeded to give alot of advice on how to ride a motorbike. Then let me go without a ticket or fine, but a much wiser person. Just wonder if he’d be allowed to do that these days with targets etc.
No, he’d of done you for dangerous driving.

Not a bike but a car seen on the Traffic cops TV prog came over the double white lines on a left bend and almost collided with a traffic car on the right hand bend - traffic car turned around and pulled said car in - no fines etc - just a very long talking to with guidance.

As the traffic cop said - better to educate than fine etc

Not much chance of knocking down a cyclist around here, they all use the pavement, kids, women and even grown men.I have even seen PCSO’s on their bikes but at least they have lights. The danger is faced by the pedestrians whilst the cyclists ride with impunity.

Colin12:
i think there should be a formal test for cyclists how come everyone else on the road have to take a test were as cyclists dont n they are the ones who end up in our blind spots were we end up injuring or killing them !!!

There should indeed be a road proficiency test, which includes both theory and prectical training leading up to the actual test. Cyclists should also be made to carry insurance and have their bikes inspected at least once a year. Maybe they should also be registered as motorcycles are and possibly pay a small amount of road tax too, after all, they want money spending on bike lanes.

Whilst we are on the subject of idiot cyclists. There is a long stretch of the A10 heading into London from Enfield down to Edmonton, where the road meets the A406. Alongside the road is a very well designed and safe cycle lane, why do cyclists still insist on driving on the road? Do they want to be squashed by a lorry or something, or are they just naturally dense?

Food for thought …
How many pedestrians have been killed or seriously injured by cyclists riding on the pavement ?
How many cyclists have been killed or seriously injured by motor vehicles on the road ?

Well if you do tell her, I’ll tell about the time you were stopped by a bike cop for going a bit quick in your truck leaving North Walsham on a Sunday.
And what did the Copper do? Ticket? Fine? Loss of Licence?
No just told you to slow it down until all the Sunday Driver were Safely at home watching Last of the Summer Wine. :open_mouth:

Maybe we should both grow up a bit

Oh god. Numpty on road tax.
Are you aware that the Polo Blue motion pays no road tax? Aswell as a few other cars. Seat make one aswell. They produce less then 35g/KM of Co2 so it means you dont pay road tax.
Cyclists produce less then this.
You dont pay road tax.

As for inspections of bikes once a year, why not. I wont pay though. You normally find the people with crappy bikes that dont work properly dont ride on the road.

Oh, and i do have insurance for when im on my bike, got it through British Cycling. The other large company is the CTC.
So basicly, errrr, yeh.
Who are ‘they’ by the way? I dont want more money spending on bike lanes. I dont use them. Many are dangerous, in a stupid place, and have glass all over them.

I always find the views of people on here and cyclists quite funny. Along the lines of the high and mighty, when really i dont actually think many people have given much thought sometimes :unamused:

does it really matter who is right or wrong? personally i hope i never have to stand in court explaining why a cylist had to be mopped up from under my wheels and if the only excuse i’ve got is they should’ve been in single file i’ll deserve jail.
i always give the little suicidal [zb] plenty of space.

You sir, are a Gent

Personally, i normally ride on my own, and follow a ‘line’ and dont do anything dangerous. But ive seen enough idiots on bikes, in cars and trucks.

Someone i know was taken off by a dangerous driver. He decided to go on a roundabout, when he should have stopped. The driver took out the back wheel of the cyclist. He didnt have a helmet on as he had broken it and was awaiting his new one.
He was in an induced coma for 3/4 weeks, loss some use of his writing hand, hes got a wife and two kids, an L shaped head and just isnt the same. Apparently it could be 2 years until the end of his re-hab.

Inconvenience of a few seconds worth that?

As for the Ban Em comment. Who? Cyclists or impatient drivers? Got the guts to ride a bike on the road yourself?

Quote of the day for me. I would also ad, on foot, and tractors etc.
The older I get, the more I realise that to be true.
Oh and the smaller you are, the bigger the effort you should make to be seen

There is a big difference that many do not appreciate - the difference between a ‘cyclist’ and a ‘pedestrian on wheels’ - I would imagine that JoeG is a cyclist

My club kit is a lovely yellow and green with some black.
Ive got 3 lights ont he back of my bike for night(ove very bright one) and 3 lights on the front.
I am hard to miss. Its been proven i think, 3 years of cycling, and havent been hit off yet. I have a lovely red glow on the floor behind me from my lights.

whos to blame if you hit a cyclist of his bike whilst hes riding 2 abreast, surely its his fault , if he hasnt got the common sense to ride in single file on a main road he has to expect the drivers behind to become frustrared ,try to get by and knock him off .
surely hes the one doing the dangerous cycling thats caused the accident not the poor driver whos just trying to do his job :exclamation: :exclamation:

If you come across a tractor doing the same speed, is it the tractor’s fault if you rear-end them?

Current National Cycle Training Standard (what has replaced the Cycling Proficiency Test) is that, where appropriate, you should ride far enough out into the road to prevent vehicles from overtaking, where it would be unsafe for them to attempt to overtake you (for example, at pinch points like traffic islands).

Learn some patience and stop trying to blame others because you’re too incompetent to overtake safely.

Depending on the circumstances the driver is obviously at fault unless the cyclist did something wrong that would cause him/her to be knocked off the bike.

Frustration is not recognised as a free ticket to knock people off bikes :open_mouth:

Cyclist = proper training which is usually done through a cycle club or may be via local authorities - easily spotable as they usually have proper cycle gear attire and act ‘professionally’ on the highway - they will probably see you before you see them
Often seen waiting properly in queues of traffic

Pedestrian on wheels = a pedestrian that just gets on a bicycle and moves it - they may see you when they are about to get squished (I like that word  )
Often seen trying to squeeze through a gap that requires the rider to be anorexic

Mug question of the week this.

Professional driver? That involves safely dealing with all manner of hazards.

Please dont use your truck as a weapon. I ride bikes aS WELL As drive commercials.I was knocked down back in Mrch ,still have some pain, the lawyers are still shilly shallying over this minor case . the driver was convicted of careless driving.

Simple.
Numpty on a bike, is a POB
Cyclist is someone that is usually dressed in cycling gear, on a decent bike, and not riding like an idiot.

Moving out when there are pinch points is about the only way to stop idiots overtaking when they shouldnt. Its mainly people who did the OP that give you the trouble, because them slowing down for a few seconds to wait abit longer(often just slowing down from 30mph to 20mph)
Moving out doesnt stop everything though. The most annoying for me is when i look behind, and move out as i approach a long queue of traffic, and i just know the car behind is going to overtake.
The car will then overtake, to quickly pull back in. Meaning i either have to undertake that car and go infront of it at a stupid angle, or slow right down so i can go behind the car and overtake everyone.
Much easier to be able to just move out and go past(on the right, never the left) without having to brake alot, or do a stupid angle.

Theres a book called cycle craft, which tells you how to ride on the road now. I never bothered and just taught myself. Had problems along the way.
Ive been spat at, had things thrown at me, driven at, given endless abuse, chased(i looked behind me when approaching lights and had a mad guy come after me), someone got out their car to try and tackle me off my bike for shouting oi when they came to overtake, sat on my right signalling left, ive also had a so called professional driver try and intimidate me at lights by sitting right behind and releasing his brakes then putting them back on, cut up, ive even had someone test their brakes infront of me :unamused:
And thats just a few things.
And their you lot say your lower then low on the road :unamused:
Im a normal person, with family and a girlfriend, and i get this, because im on a bike?
How many would have the ■■■■■■■■ to tell my family, girlfriend and friends why they have knocked me off and killed me? And actually tell them face to face?
If i was in the position i wouldnt be able to.

Ive asked that question many times on here, but i dont think anyone has ever answered it…
