Knocking a cyclist off his bike

whos to blame if you hit a cyclist of his bike whilst hes riding 2 abreast, surely its his fault , if he hasnt got the common sense to ride in single file on a main road he has to expect the drivers behind to become frustrared ,try to get by and knock him off .
surely hes the one doing the dangerous cycling thats caused the accident not the poor driver whos just trying to do his job :exclamation: :exclamation:

The fault is with the driver not the rider BUT extenuating circumstances will be taken into consideration.

There is no LAW that says cyclists MUST be in single file
HC - Rule 66

You should

never ride more than two abreast, and ride in single file on narrow or busy roads and when riding round bends

A driver cannot use an excuse of inconvenience in any circumstances to perform an unsafe overtake/pass

However frustrating the actions of the cyclist are if the driver hits the cyclist because they messed up an overtake then it the drivers fault.
Sadly lack of Common Sense isn’t an offence.

my mum used to ride a bike and hated lorries because they often passed without giving her much space, she always used to ride very close to the edge of the road, my father who also rode a bike didn’t suffer from this problem because he rode so far out in the road that cars and lorries couldn’t pass him if something was coming the other way, when they did pass him he had space to move over if they were too close, his position would have been about the same as a rider who was 2 abreast.

I think he was the safer rider.

If you hit a person on a push bike then it is your fault

When I first took to the road on a motorbike, pre CBT days, so no training. I got stopped by a bike cop in the first couple of weeks.
He told me to ride further out into the road for the very same reason.
P.S. He wa a top bloke probably saved my life. I’d ridden through a red light but instead of just giving me a fine and letting me go. He gave me a right bollocking about my riding standards, (he’d followed me for sometime  )and then proceeded to give alot of advice on how to ride a motorbike. Then let me go without a ticket or fine, but a much wiser person. Just wonder if he’d be allowed to do that these days with targets etc.

I’d ridden through a red light but instead…

as it was illegal but not unsafe AT THE TIME then…

Which is worth more to everyone than a few points and a few quid

ANY SENSIBLE traffic cop will still do the same

My belief is if the gene pool needs some chlorine in it, then let the pool boy get cracking

Looking back a with over 25 years experience of riding motorbikes, I think it was both.

I hope so, and I hope that some snotty little youth would still listen, as I said it probably saved my life.

This is much the same as the driver who tried to convince me that a car he had damaged was at fault because it was parked badly. Just because the other guy gets in your way it doesnt give you the right to squish him.

The other week I was heading long the kings road in Chelsea towards Wandsworth bridge, there were roadworks that reduced the road to one lane, governed by tempory traffic lights. As I entered the roadworks I noticed three cyclists coming through the roadworks towards me, they had clearly ignored the red light on their side and were forcing the cars ahead of me to swerve, couldn’t do this to me because the size of my vehicle, and they were forced themselves to mount the pavement to get by me. The last cyclist stopped to give me a dirty look, like I had blocked his path on purpose, to which I pointed at the traffic light on his side and said “it’s a red light you stupid (zb)” and drove off

Now in this situation had there been a collision would the cyclist still be blameless?

Grayham:

Lets assume there was one - did the cyclist ride into you or did you drive into the cyclist ? - did either attempt to stop ? - probably many more questions before a definitive can be given…

What was the cyclist doing wrong in your opinion?
If you were driving along a road in your lorry, its a single carriageway and your doign 40mph.
A lorry comes past, maybe a car take your pick, and hits you as you go past.
Who would be at fault? You for driving along? Or the other driver for hitting you?

To the OP, how long were you inconvenienced by the cyclist? Minuets? Seconds?
How bad was the cyclist after you had knocked him off? How long is he going to be inconvenienced?

Grayham, you should have run those POB(people on bikes) over, or just crushed their bike. Honestly. If your going to jump a red like that, then you deserve to be run over.
I have been through road works when on green though, and just as im going through they go to amber. If theres a head wind or i dont have much left in me then speeding up to sprint through them isnt an option, so i have sometimes been left near the end or halfway when the lights the other side would have changed. If that happens i will sometimes go into the coned off area if i can and either wait or proceed slowly, or took right in and keep going.

does it really matter who is right or wrong? personally i hope i never have to stand in court explaining why a cylist had to be mopped up from under my wheels and if the only excuse i’ve got is they should’ve been in single file i’ll deserve jail.
i always give the little suicidal ■■■■■■■ plenty of space.

BAN EM :imp: :imp: :imp: :imp: :imp: :imp:

You sir, are a Gent

Personally, i normally ride on my own, and follow a ‘line’ and dont do anything dangerous. But ive seen enough idiots on bikes, in cars and trucks.

Someone i know was taken off by a dangerous driver. He decided to go on a roundabout, when he should have stopped. The driver took out the back wheel of the cyclist. He didnt have a helmet on as he had broken it and was awaiting his new one.
He was in an induced coma for 3/4 weeks, loss some use of his writing hand, hes got a wife and two kids, an L shaped head and just isnt the same. Apparently it could be 2 years until the end of his re-hab.

Inconvenience of a few seconds worth that?

As for the Ban Em comment. Who? Cyclists or impatient drivers? Got the guts to ride a bike on the road yourself?

Ady u arent planning on knocking someone off there bicycle are you?? or have u already done that!!!    :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp:

I must agree with MrB i assume all cyclists, pedestrians, cars and vans are all BRAINDEAD Numbties and it seems to work but then i drive at night and not too many nunbties out and about after midnight :grimacing:

i think there should be a formal test for cyclists how come everyone else on the road have to take a test were as cyclists dont n they are the ones who end up in our blind spots were we end up injuring or killing them !!!

No no no. Come on. We need some sorting out here.
We having Cyclists. These are the people you see who wont get in your way much, ride safely, and will actually help you out.
You then have POB(people on bikes) who basicly, will ride like idiots, go in your blind spots, jump red lights and just really annoy you.
Knock a few POBs off. but dont knock cyclists off.

It does amaze me when i ride home from work, overtaking cars when they queue up, how people will move out, and even tell me i should be on the left, undertaking.
Not a place i like to be.

There was a campaign trying to educate cyclists about the blind spots etc. I had a spoke card on my bike for a while which had a picture of a truck. it said, “Right side” on the right side, and “suicide” on the left side.
Pretty good i think. No idea if it will help.
I did actually have a cyclist come up on the left hand side of me at traffic lights. Not completely on my left, to my left and back. I was turning left after the traffic lights.
It was not nice to have this bike go up the left hand side of me just as i was about to turn, and just as i had clipped in so wasnt really going fast.
Idiots wont learn. I did actually hope he got wacked one day. No idea if he has done.
