Kilsney Quarry

Who owned it and when did it close? and why?

Who owned it and when did it close? and why?

Heard several reasons for the closure
1 When several years ago the major aggregate companies were busy taking over each other, the Monopolies Commission told them to close some of their quarries, similarly with Threshfield Quarry

2 Yorkshire Dales National Park refused permission to extend

3 Well-to-do ‘Off ■■■■■■■■ moved into property at bottom of access road by Fish Farm, wanted quarry to open later in the morning, as the noise from the nasty lorries was wakening them too early. Amazing how much clout some of these buffoons actually have!!!

No doubt there will be other drivers more able to give the real reasons

Number 2 and 3 sound about right. Same crap in the Peak District National Park. Never mind about the loss of jobs for the local community.

Kilnsey closed mid 90’s can’t remember exactly someone will be along with a precise date I’m sure.
As to why , It was environmental and nimby’s and planners all in one , access road very narrow just where barns/ houses were.
As for Threshfield, that closed when Tilcon merged with Tarmac and Swinden quarry just down the road being bigger was kept open .
It was said at the time that Threshfield had plenty of reserves and permissions left and was only being mothballed.
All dates approximate, other quarries are available.

A few interesting things on google about kilnsey quarry ,Omen 3 the final conflict was filmed there ,also see daelnet .

Kilnsey finally closed for good in 1998 during 1997 ken longthornes tippers cleared the last of limestone out prior to being left to rewild, planning consent expired in jan 1999.
Better Limes trading as Kilnsey limes owned the quarry till 1977 then the lease was sold Eskett Quarries in 1987, Eskett Quarries became a subsidiary of Evered Quarries Ltd part of the Aggregate Industries group by the early 1990’s a Bardon roadstone sign was put up at at the Quarry entrance

Bloody 'ell Quarryman , that was just the answer I was looking for I worked for Clogger early '90 s for about 8 months , long enuff !
When did Threshfield actually close then ?
Jim

Threshfield quarry was mothballed December 2001 with some redundancies during 2002/03 all the crushing /grading plant was removed. When planning was granted to extract a further 24 million tonnes from Swinden quarry in 2008 this was the last nail in the coffin for the Threshfield quarry having walked into the upper quarry recently there are millions of tonnes still left up there to be quarried

was still open in 96 (i think) thats when left aja smiffiessss

Cheers Quarryman, I was talking to a workmate who also worked for Clogger and he said he got one of the last loads out of Kilnsey before it closed.
You are obviously from the Grassington side of the hill, I’m from Pateley I would think paths have crossed at some stage.

Did Anyone know Colin Wright from kettlewell or his sons Andrew or David ? He was a transport photographer who also published some books which most of his photos are from Dales areas ,I wondered where his photos are now ,according to one of his books he’d got 4000 of them .

Yes i knew colin wright from Kettlewell when he died in 2010 his wife Rose sold all his photograhpes 10,000 or more to PM photography [phil moth] he has over 250,000 photos which he does sell write to him or look on the internet at one time in the 1980s cloin had a photograph of every 8 wheeler in the dales and north lancashire.

Thanks Quarryman ,it’s a bit like a mini Derbyshire up there ,a quarry on every hill ,and villages with lorries hiding behind houses !

The small village I grew up in Larry across the valley from here was full of owner drivers all tippers also many drivers who drove for the quarries ,there was a official parish council lorry park in the village until about 10 years ago it was full every night about 15 lorries plus sometimes ,now there’s only 2 lorries park there .

I paid a visit to Kilnsey sometime ago and couldn’t believe that wagons had to pull up between the houses to get to the quarry. This pic conveys it best:

Colin was always in a rush, whether at his little printing business in Grassington, collecting at Toy Fairs and when taking photographs!!! I had the pleasure in meeting him on several occasions and was seen by Colin as competition with regard to taking photographs of trucks around the Dales. He searched for me when in the area on the CB channels until eventually we met up and compared photos. I could never understand though, why he chose to take black and white photos of the trucks? I was fortunate to know him as he was always interested in where and what I was able to find and photo, and still have all the books he published, particularly the 8 wheeler book, slightly ‘dog eared’ now. Just before he published the ‘Pickfords’ book, he took me to London for final checks with the Pickfords management and we took the opportunity to go to A J Bull’s premises to photo some of their bulkers in Gold Livery, possibly their 100th year in business.

It helped him greatly that his brother-in-law, Joe worked on the weighbridge at Kilnsea, as when any new tipper was on site, a quick phone call would bring Colin out from his printers to capture a few images in the quarry. Personally, I was always surprised at the speed of the trucks going up into and down loaded from Kilnsey, not the easiest place to photo!!!

PS I have a few photos taken on the access road, near Mastiles Lane and some of ‘Uncle Kenneth’s’ trucks from the eighties up to today and will put them up when time allows.

Thanks Barry ,I’ve got the 8 wheeler book and the fair ground book ,in them he writes of doing more volumes did they happen ? Thanks Dan
