Many thanks Tyreman! Your observations seem very likely.
Your comments about watching Mark and his carnival contributions reminded me of standing and watching the Sittingbourne carnival as a young boy in the late '70’s…mainly to watch the lorries ! A&RJ Wood always provided Trucks…seeing Marks number plate(name) in cab,I remember one of the woods lorry had same but ‘Ron’ Mark may be able to confirm?

I have seen this unit as well. Reg no is S778FEU. When Dodds took over in 1998, all of the remaining units and trailers (that hadn’t gone back to Invicta Motors were used by Dodds, but Hammonds kept the 3 EBT Units and tanks running from Dover. They also owned various petrol stations throughout Kent, and had an office in Dover Docks. Maybe this red unit is something that has grown from this?

George Hammond - I was driving down the M20 this afternoon towards Ashford.Shock of my life…I passed a red Volvo FM pulling a container. The lorry had Hammond in white writing on the side and the George Hammond corporate logo (flag etc ) on the windowless sleeper cab.
Do they still have a skeletal haulage operation ? One of you will know the answer I am sure.

As far as i know, this old Volvo is the only lorry still owned by Hammonds. They use it to pull containers locally. Im actually pulling containers myself for Hammonds this week out of Dover. While i’m down there i’ll try and find out a bit more.

Ive done many carnivals over the years, both Sheerness & Sittingbourne, but unfortuanatly due to health & saftey legislation its not worth the hassle any more. The last one i did was Sittingbourne 2005 and i had to take the trailer to Newington first to have scaffolding put round it. Then of cause i had to take it back afterwards to have it all taken back off again. As for ‘Ron’. that wood be the late Ron Reed. He did lots of carnivals back in the 70s & 80s as did many other drivers at that time. I used to really enjoy doing them to be honest and will try and dig out some old carnival photos if anyones interested.

Heres one of me in Sheerness carnival. Not sure what year is was but think it may have been about 1996.

Another carnival photo. This was taken in Milton during the Sittingbourne carnival.

Here’s one of the ex Ashby Volvo’s

Yes - I’m in the process of scanning them. They were taken when the fleet was white. Is there any truck in particular?
