Here with have one of Hammonds Atkinsons
The next batch of Mercs for A&RJ Wood were 1619’s and had the short sleeper cab. Here is XKR3S in A Woods colours. The reg numbers would be worth a fortune now.
We had XKR1S - (X KR1S) on an MB service van for a number of years before it go transferred to a company car for a while.
190bhp tractor, those were the days!

Another nice photo Tyreman…heres another from the Woods archive. Four 2035s loaded with Christmas trees.
Thanks Mark. That reminds me that George Hammond used to hire in trailers before christmas for a contract they had collecting christmas trees for the garden centre in Tunstall

For low powered trucks, Woods got their moneys worth out of those S Reg’s, as they lasted until the D Reg 2035’s were supplied in 1986.

RJ Wood had run a small fleet of Dawson Rentals Volvo’s in the early 90’s along with a handful of Mercs. During this time they were looking to replace both the unit and trailer fleets with new vehicles. They decided on 12 Scanias and 12 Lamberet trailers, which were delivered in August 92. This coincided with a change of name to RJ Wood Coolchain, and a new livery. The units became K341-352PKK, and were joined by K91-94SKR a few months later. During this period they also ran three second hand Volvo FL6 Fridges. Here’s an article form Truck Magazine explaing all.
You certainly know your stuff tyreman…it was about this time that i joined the company. The K regs were soon joined by a batch of L regs. These were all twin steers as opposed to the original rear lifts. The photo in the magazine was taken outside Scantrucks in Sittingbourne and is a supurb photo ( i have a large framed copy ), and is of K341PKK which was driven from new by Dave Kemp.
This was L891 ■■■ which Dave Kemp drove after K341 PKK. This photo was taken at Stuwart Woods farm at Conyer nr Teynham.
Thanks Mark I didn’t think that picture was taken at Teynham - I can see it’s Scantruck now.
After the L reg’s were delivered Scania wanted to keep tyres ‘in house’ so we lost the business. There was a batch of M reg units delivered just as WRM took over, (I believe there was meant to be 10 but only 8 were delivered) As part of WRM Mercedes later put in some N Reg units, which I think replaced the remaing K reg Scanias.
It was at this time that things started to get messy, the M regs were the last motors in the Coolchain blue & white ( i had M750 OKM ) and were Streamlines. The first WRM livery trucks were also Scanias M608/609/610. Three more Scanias came on N regs, and were soon followed by 14 Mercedes 2538s.
Later on that year WRM took over Henleys, some of the first trucks WRM put into Henleys were N100/102-4XKJ, which went to Rochdale, RJ Wood had N85-7XKJ, so these Scania link both RJ Wood and Henley fleets.
