Yes it defferntly was a sad day Coullings shut there gates, hears a few pic of Blythe Bros another company my grandad use to drive for, he is sat a top the Akinson which he thought was a great lorry.

Is this the same Blythe’s that became W.J>Blythe from Faversham?

Yes that’s is the same firm, I spoke to my grandad about it the other day.

Do you remember when EH Nicholls ran a fleet of Guy Big Js ?..I’ve never seen a photo of one though!

I don’t think they ran Big-Js, though I stand to be corrected. Robert

Hi Chris, ive got several photos like that and that was the best of the lot im affraid. I think that Crusader started off in their original green colour but was resprayed blue later. To be honest it looks like it was painted in the yard with a broom!.

Somewhere, I have an photo of it in its original green livery, taken by the driver (a Mr Boorman, IIRC), but I can’t find it. It’ll turn up eventually. Robert

Just realised I’ve only posted one pic on this thread of my own lorry! So here’s another. Robert

Nicholls had a fleet of Guy Big Js in the early 70s. When they became unavailable they started buying the ERFs, the first of which were B Series day cabs. There was also a solitary Foden too.

IIRC Nicholls, Hazledens Swains, G.L. Baker, Husks and Pascuals(Bennetts?) all ran Big Js at one time. I think Mumfords never had any later model Guys than the Invincible. Alan Firmin had one Invincible too.

And LV too, according to this pic! Robert

Dartford Wharfage Guy from a Merriworth Trailers brochure. The livery looks like J Clubb’s were they linked? Clubb had at least an 8x4 tipper and a 6x4 mixer in their fleet.
Safeways Supermarket also ran Guy Warrior and Invincibles in the early 60’s as well.

I didn’t know EH Nicholls had moved to a new custom built site! Looks good too, after that old quarry site they used to occupy. Robert

Dartford Wharfage ran Atki and then Seddon Atki after the Big Js. The Guy Big J was a very popular lorry in Kent, I’m sure that Swains ran them too, before the Leyland Marathons.

Swain had at least 3 Guy’s. Not sure how many Haseldons had, but I found these pictures on e-bay ages ago.
