kent transport

Dartford Wharfage Guy from a Merriworth Trailers brochure. The livery looks like J Clubb’s were they linked? Clubb had at least an 8x4 tipper and a 6x4 mixer in their fleet.
Safeways Supermarket also ran Guy Warrior and Invincibles in the early 60’s as well.

Dartford Wharfage were IIRC part of TDG in fact they may have been the TDG Group’s first buy out in the mid fifties when James Duncan started TDG. Cheers Bewick.

A friend of mine has family connections with Wall of Dover transport, and he asked me if I knew anything about the company. I do remember seeing their lorries but I cannot for the life of me remember what they ran. There’s nothing on Google. Does anyone remember Wall of Dover? Robert

Martin husk owns Coombe Valley Transport of Dover could he have bought this company out ?

.

Coombe Valley Transport & Thomas R Wall are one of the same.

Here’s an AEC Mercury of Wall of Dover. Note that Martin Husk is also named. I think Walls ran Mercedes in later years before they became Coombe Valley. Martin Husk ran his own company plus there was a tyre business.

Well done Tyreman for this quick research! Mark R and I were only the other day wondering if photographic evidence would ever turn up. Cheers, Robert

Re the question of who in Kent ran Guy’s - I was once told that when Marks & Spencer first opened stores in Europe - 1975 apparently, GL Baker - used Guys to do the store deliveries. I’m not sure when Baker’s were taken over by Boc - anyone know??, but while I worked at BOC in the 1990’s, I remember Mick Meenan (our European transport manager) telling me that when they started to deliver to Paris, they got paid more back then, than they were getting in the 90’s. Same old story I guess…

This was mine back in the late 90’s- it was always a pleasure to go to work… My sons are now 20 & 22 yrs old. Some of you - Robert1952 especially, will work out the location - the yard shunter is a clue.It wasn’t my yard, I just rented a parking space.

I remember MCD at Queenborough had a fleet of Guys, which were gradually replaced by Leyland Cruisers.

BOC had taken over by the time this Bedford had been delivered in 1986. My boss always referred to them as GL Baker even after they were taken over. I think the man in charge of transport at Faversham during the early 80’s was Mick Eustace

Thanks for that tyreman. That’s the first photo I’ve seen of a EHN Guy.Will try to get hold of a copy.

I found this 1977 article in CM. It features the Transhield Guys at the Barnsley depot, but the piece could easily apply to the depot at Oare, Faversham. Robert

@ ‘Jarvy’: here’s one of BJ Walton’s I drove. Can you remember if it had a 250 or 290 ■■■■■■■■ Robert

It had a 250 in it. There was that and a Transcon. that came from a company that Brian bought out for the Amstrad work.

Thanks Jarvy - I knew you’d know!! Cheers, Robert

I’ve been meaning to post this up for ages…

Not exactly a Kent haulier, but I worked out of Dartford docks for six months or so with this in 1996:

An ex-Arcese LHD 190-36. Very tight in the cab with the cut-down rear roof over the bunk. A good job, well paid, but too much dodgyness for my liking, so I jumped ship to EVR Traction in Dover which was a little less well paid but they expected you to run 100% straight.

One of Dave Coburn’s (‘Digby’) lorries. Sittingbourne area. Robert

I remember them being in Towmasters old yard in Queenborough. Wasn’t Digby Dave Coburn’s dog IIRC? All of the trucks had reg numbers ending in DOG at some point. What happened to this fleet?

I didn’t know him well, but I first met him when he was on EKE in Canterbury - he was a regular and I was doing casual for them. Then a few years later when he’d got his own lorries I double-manned with him for a couple of days in his F12 Globetrotter on tilt work. It stands out in my mind because it was the first 400bhp unit I drove! It had BKJ, not DOG in the reg. I’ve not seen or heard of him since that period. Robert

I came across this fleet as he was pulling Sealane trailers in the early 90’s that we did the tyres on. He had a number of EuroTechs and EuroStars L/M/N reg’s. and also a couple of older Volvos G and H reg

Not sure how true it is, but I was told by Kev ‘Fonzie’ Fraser that Dave Coburn was nicknamed Digby after the dog in a film - Fonzie reckoned they looked alike■■? Just what I was told - I’ve never met Dave so I wouldn’t really know. I think Fonzie was an old mate of Dave’s. Not sure if Fonzie is still driving - I worked with in the mid 90’s.
