Jenrick speeding

The immigration minister was caught speeding on the M1 at 11:30 at night, 68 in a 40. The important question to ask is wtf was the speed limit 40 on an empty motorway with all 4 lanes open?

Maybe he deserves it for driving in lane 3 of an empty motorway?

My guess

No hard shoulder means it’s a smart motorway.

We can’t see the camera but we can presume it’s attached to a gantry across the whole carriageway displaying the speed for each lane or a matrix sign displaying the speed. In my experience the cameras only work when the speed limit is being displayed on that gantry/matrix sign.

The image says “Time since speed limit change … 34 mins” so it hasn’t just changed.

Empty motorway and 40mph says to me that the speed limit was reduced for the road workers to collect the cones. Usually it’s 50mph even when down to one lane. Either it’s just ahead or just as likely they have already been collected and no one has bothered removing the restrictions yet.

Also (it would make sense that) lanes 1 and 2 might be red X or yellow arrow depending on road works location.
</no evidence>

Always do the posted speed limit (past a gantry/matrix displaying the speed limit, especially of you can see the yellow camera attached to the nearside support).

I presume that’s a photo from the speed camera? Is there a second to compare distance travelled?

^^^ very perceptive analysis. Sorry I should have posted the story as well.

They mention another photo of him going under the gantry with 40 displayed. He’s not disputing the 68mph, just that he failed to see the roadworks, I mean speed limit, I mean speed camera [emoji6]

Theres lots of times its 40 on an empty motorway. It doesnt bother me.I just knock the cruise down to 40.Its just as boring as doing 56mph for me

It’s obvious that the motorway speed regime like all the rest is being weaponised to create maximum scope for fine revenues and criminalisation for licence removal.Bearing in mind it used to be three endorsements for a ban regardless of the margin over the limit.

Speed limit was probably 50 on the gantry before the one with the speed camera on, then it mysteriously dropped down to 40 to catch those sleeping. I see it almost everyday on M5 Bristol. Sneaky ■■■■■. :imp:

I’d rather get home 40% quicker.

I can see where you got the 40% figure from, but it’s wrong:
100 miles at 40mph = 2.5 hours or 150 mins
100 miles at 56 mph = 1.8 hours or 108 mins
Difference = 42 mins, which is 28% of 150
With the risk of points/speed awareness course and all the rest of the hassle

I for one have zero sympathy for Jenrick or any of his ilk; If it were a truck driver getting done for a second speeding offence in the space of six months, the talk would be all about safety and “speeding juggernauts”.
Love the picture that goes with the Sunday Times report, says it all

Maybe the 40% was of 70mph…the legal speed of Jenricks car? Not Splooms truck? ~about-ish correct.
But for the 40% trip time saving to have any validity, the speed reduction would need to apply to the whole “journey home”, not merely a section of roadworks.
Open to correction.

Yes I’d agree with that, and the longer the journey the smaller still the proportional impact on the overall journey end time. I was just contrasting a very basic 40mph average speed to 56mph average speed.

No journey, not even a night journey, is devoid of unexpected delays, so again I’d say speeding is even more pointless.

Jenrick’s “defence” is laughable
“had not seen the signs for roadworks
and
“Please note by way of context that I was driving at 68mph on the M1 motorway, below the national speed limit of 70mph,”
and
“At the late hour I was driving, the road was largely empty and I do not recall there being roadworks.”

Would that work for a “dangerous juggernaut driver”? I think not, so I don’t think it should work for him.

Absolutely

Understood

Yep.
“I didn`t see the huge flashing signs above my head” ?
Sounds like a demand for a life driving ban, rather than a plea in defense/mitigation, dunit!

'Had not…

Seen the sign for the roadworks’.

Due care and attention then.

Here’s your driving license… rip rip rip rip rip… confetti.

Ok I misspoke, I would rather not take 40% longer to get home. [emoji6]

I wont speed for no one,no way ,no how.If you have to speed to do your job, youre not in a good place,I dont think

Ok, so what if they lowered the speed limit on an empty, fully open motorway? What if it was 20 mph? What if it was 5mph? Would you accept speeding then?

(Everyone has a price [emoji23])

Actually, only a couple of nights ago, there was a 20mph through the roadworks, because of an oncoming vehicle.I just simply set the cruise to 20,which is about how low it goes.I had a 2 mile queue behind me,but again,I wont break the law for anybody.
But one thing I dont understand, how is moving at 56 any more fulfilling?
The job is boring anyway,I think, its a means to an end.
But,as for a price,I would surrender my HGV for 100k.Or 25k for 3 points,I cant do anything else,so I would have to spend the rest of my life flipping burgers or ckeaning toilets and so on

It’s like the speed reductions for ‘obstacle’/animals/debris reported etc etc etc lasting for miles.
Strangely the obstacles and animals and debris conveniently always seems to be on those sections of motorways which have gantry signs installed and the ‘reports’ never seem to say exactly where they were seen or which if any lanes are affected.
The irony of a government minister falling victim to his own party’s radical anti road use agenda.Which is as bad as anything which their ‘opposition’ could dream up.
