IIRC didn’t Capstaffs used to advertise in Headlight offering return loads ? Memory is a bit hazy now though ! Cheers Dennis.
This is a clipping from the Eve/Chron, Newcastle, the is defo Cappies A Type Bedford, Regards Larry,
I recall J.W.Capstaff having a depot at the top of Byker Bank, It was Orrel & Brewsters to begin with. Cappies moved to T.V.T.E. Into a brand new depot, & they had a Cafe & Digs called the Highwayman or something like that it was a licenensed place also. I do know from a driver I new they did the work out of Tyne Brand in North Shields, The building is very derelict now, They used to do the Ambrosia Creamed Rice from Devon too, I dont know if any of the drivers are still about, they will be very old if they are, They also ran a few tippers based at Swarland nr. Felton, Regards Larry.
A Capstaff Commer in the background.
I must be getting old as I remember Orrell and Brewster, did Capstaff take them over or just the depot?
There’s a Crow’s Transport sheeted trailer in the photo as well but does anybody know who the Atki belongs to? D M smith of Wishaw maybe? Just a guess.

,Aye I took a container there in 1971 there was two of us but form some unknown reason we couldnt get tipped, The union was involved, The union geazer was a Harry Hull, anyway we returned them back to North Shields, & the next day they were spotted heading back down the road on Cappies wagons, I never found out what the problem was but the firm I worked for said they got paid for the job, Regards Larry.

I’ve got a pic of a Cappy’s motor that has the name written as Capstaffe, with an E on the end, I’ll try and dig it out.
Always seemed to be a Capstaff motor around in the Sixties. Jimmy Logan might shed some light on them, my old man said they were a smashing set of lads driving for them, I believe it was a canny firm to work for too.
Franky.
Aye, there was a driver who lived beside me at Wideopen, He worked for them years, Allan Platten a real nice bloke to know, & there was a one called Koggi, now he was a real character,He went to work for Trembles at Benton after he left Cappies, I think his full name was Bernard Koggins, It would be very nice to hear from anyone who knew these drivers & some original photos of them in the old days, Regards Larry.
