Is this right?

So iv had my start time changed from 5am to 7:30am and when I asked my manager why he said “we’ve had a couple of agency’s guys start and we are obliged to cater for there start time so we’ve had give one your start time” his exact words… A couple of drivers told me when I started that agency drivers get the best hours, trucks and routes and now I’m starting to see it myself so my question is is this normal practice at other places?? Don’t get me wrong iv got nothing against agency drivers but why should I give up my start time for some new agency driver when it should be the other way round. Now I could potentially be working up to 10pm at night! ■■■■■■ off is an understatement

I doubt it…

… it’s more likely to be 10:30pm.

Clearly your company has an agreement with the agency, which sees you getting ■■■■ on apparently, is it morally right? Probably not, but you had been pre warned by the sounds of things…

Remember you’re helping out someone out whose less fortunate than yourself

Our place do the same. The thinking is (I imagine) that a full timer will just put up with whatever the company throws at them but agency drivers are free to easily move somewhere else if they don’t get what they want such as easy/long hours runs and good trucks.

When the work drops off though it’ll be them that take the hit, remember that.

However, if you’ve started at a company on an agreed start time and that start time is in your contract then you have grounds for concern. My guess is though you’ve signed up to be flexible when it comes to such things.

It happens at many places, almost impossible to get limpers between 00:00 - 04:00 so new starters get those times.

Subbies get the nice long runs while the full timers get short runs, thats how it is with the majority of large outfits.

You could make it clear to the management along with you’re fellow full timers that you are far from happy with the situation and should it continue you will be looking for another job, or of you are in a union take it up with them, neither will probably be much use but its better than doing nothing.

Did you clock in/turn up for work at 5:30 today ? If so 8:30 is home time no matter what

It used to happen regular when I was at Woolworths in Rochdale , you would be going in for a basic 8 hr rugby trunk or maybe a couple of local stores Then finding out that the limpers were getting the swindons, moss end. , Bedford trunks anything. From 12 to 15 hrs used to ■■■■ me right off too pal

At out place it’s the opposite way round, agency drivers want the longest runs and get messed around with start times something chronic. Early starts then a late start the following day etc.
Regular employed drivers get mostly the same runs start times each day where possible.

And to rub salt in the wound the limpets are probably on better money :smiling_imp:

There is another consideration from the company’s point of view. Unless the company strike lucky then the agency drivers won’t know any of the drops so a bit of shuffling around will be necessary to give them work that they are likely to complete in their shift. Naturally not all companies work this way which is why stuff is brought back.

So the full timers have to be penalised for the limpers who can’t do the job right :open_mouth: I understand what your saying but its still a bitter pill to swallow specially when their on more money than you :unamused:

All part of the ’ joy of Stobart’s '. Wait until you start getting 15 hour Fridays including store deliveries.

Transport is a mad world, our place pay £520 a day spot hire for a unit and driver more often than not they **** it up and do roughly half the work they are paid for, damage the trailer get lost decide to have a kip in a lay by en route and so on.

The same day a good full time driver will loose £25 from his pay for going a few minutes over their break, all the decent guys leave lots of inept licence holders appear wreck all the kit and so it goes on, the attempt to save money ends up costing considerably more than the initial saving, one does not need to be a graduate of Harvard or the L.S.E to work it out.

I’m so glad we don’t have this crap at our place.
Don’t use agency and no silly docking pay for silly things.
Hardly ever any damage to trucks and we all get along.
Think I’m lucky when I read about other company’s problems

I’ll crack on for now and see it how it goes… it’s all a bit of an eye opener for me I always thought it was the agency drivers who got messed about who knows maybe it’s the way to go in the future…

Which depot are you running out of Berty?

I queried a senior planner over this once. He was completely honest about it.

If I give him a crap run, he might not come back tomorrow morning, if I give one of our drivers a crap run, he won’t like it, but he’ll be back in in the morning.
