Ray Bugg retired back in May this year. I was lucky enough to fill his boots,so to speak! A lot of the other drivers have been there 20 years plus at Northampton and they all are a great bunch !
This is me BTW !
I know a couple of the drivers from Remie ,Ruud,Arthur. I Also know a couple of guys who drive for NAP in holland like Gerard,Robbert and Max .
I used to drive for DHL out of London Colney but moving over to TNT was the best thing I have ever done !!
I have just been speaking to Mick Ihme who extends his regards to you all . Also Tony Willoughby and Mick Wilson still work and drive for TNT Northampton …
Ruudje hallo, this pict was taken at Jabeke, regards gringo01

hi all,i used to run to the ipec depot @ round spinney for sayers transport out of heathrow, used to run with a subbie called jon morton, yellow daf 2800,also recognise a few of the drivers names, jim broome , jimmy topping (orange 2500 daf) jim had a 3300 if i recall, nice bunch of lads, wonder if anyone knows there whereabouts■■? cheers. was only a young driver then but made me feel welcome
Jim Broome had 2 DAF 3300, Jimmy Topping had one running out of Thornbury (Bristol) depot and the other ran out of another depot but I can’t remember which. They were consecutive reg no’s. Jimmy Topping also had a DAF 2800, FYA 852T, if I remember but it was 30 years ago! Jimmy was best man at my wedding. Jim Broome lived in a bungalow at Cambridge, Gloucestershire. Ivor Wheeler also worked for him and did IPEC work as well as going to Italy in Jimmy’s old DAF 2500. Ivor was a big lad and I seem to remember the lorry going in for service and they asked for the step to be straightend. When it was not Jim Broome was on the phone and was told to sell the lorry. The step was not bent, the cab was and he would never be able to get a windscreen fitted if it went it was that far out of shape!
I can remember a young chap but can’t remember his name, it could have been Jim, coming into TNT Bristol depot running for a subbie on nights on the IPEC run, he’d park up al day there & after a wile TNT brought the trunk in house & we overed it 6 night a week up to Round Spinney. I think he then went on to pull for Independant.

There was a young chap at the ICD who did night shunting, blimey he could handle those wagon & drag outfits even with a left hand drive lorry on it. I can’t remember his name now, but he used to wake us up when our trailers were ready to go. I hope he’s a member of this forum.

His name wouldn’t be Damien by any chance?
I was running into Northampton 2 or 3 nights a week from Belgium between 1996 and 1999,and Damien was one of the night shunters at the time.
I then started driving Belgium - Sweden and would only do the odd trip to Northampton, but I did see Damien quite a few times on the road,he was double-manning by then.
Hello KW
I can’t remember his name mate, I left TNT in Feb 1988 to become an owner driver (it was a mistake) so I knew this young shunter prior to that date. One thig he did that I’ll never forget was to get one of our drivers to have a go at shunting a wagon & drag onto the dock there one night.
We had a cracking chap running out of our Southmpton depot called Graham Guppy, he was the life and soul of the party and would always be there looking for a windup. The b**ger had me at the TNT Atherstone hub one day & if he reads this he’ll remember it! Anyway, he was always on the case of the IPEc shunter, one night we all got there lined up at the gate & a wagon & drag was across the yard. The sunter came along the line & got Graham, took him with us following to the lorry & said “you put the dam thing on the dock if you think you can do it beter than me” It was one of the funniest 10 minutes I can remember watching a man tie a LHD wagon & drag in a knot. Fair play to Graham, he took it in good faith, shook the shunters hand & we all went about our nights work.
Our night rota ran over 6 weeks & I always enjoyed the IPEC week, it was 6 nights but always a good crack, we used to stop in Jacks layby bus Cafe on the A43 (I Think) for a up of tea, gather there & run up together. Brilliant days, lovely memories.

thanks bristolron,i pulled for a subbie when TNT consumed ipec & sayers, had my own unit for 3 years now MAN TGA 480 XXL,back doing airfreight out of heathrow, was great to have a wander down memory lane!!!
Do you know a TNT Driver from Heathrow called Les Prater by any chance. He’d just had a new R cab Scania unit for a Subbie but in TNT colours. I used to see him at IPEC sometimes but mainly up at TNT Atherstone hub. Nice chap Les.

I was an owner driver from Kempston nr. Bedford and in the early eighties i occasionaly subbed to IPEC at round spinny. Ian Mold was the transport manager and his assistant was a mate of mine, well known in Northampton, Dave Hammond, who gave me some work when they were busy. It was a good job and although i tried, i could not get on there permanently. IPEC was owned by four Australians and when they sold out to TNT in about 1983/4, they set up Independant Express, with Mick Eagan as MD. I started with them as a subby, at Luton depot where Dave Hammond was the manager and i stayed for a couple of years, until they were bought out by TDG, who integrated Independant into Tuffnells parcels, who they already owned.
I remember Ipec/Gelder Spectra/T N T if they didnt clear in Northampton you did not want to be behind them up the stairs

Hi Huntsman; Dave Hammond! Now theres a name from the past! I knew him at Ipec and also wehen he went to Independant. I built him some models of the pink MAN’s. I wonder if he still has any of them…Also remember Ian Mold but no so well as Dave.
What was your truck? Did you get it painted pink at any time?
Hi Truckerash, Dave Hammond was my wifes cousin, and i am still in touch with him, although i dont see him very often now as he lives near Hull and i am living in Thailand. The photo of the Man Artic (PBD 960y) you have put on here is the first ArticI had on Independant. I leased it off Gerald White. I had it for a few months and then changed it for a 3 axle unit. Also i had a Man M/T and a small L/T which i started with when Luton Depot first opened. We were the busyest depot on Independent, mainly due to the fact that we had a full trailor load of spares out of vauxhall Motors every day plus another 2 trailors of ordinary freight. Dave made a deal with a small one man band, who started an overnight parcel service using Independant for his deliveries. It was called Nightfreight and Dave is proud of the fact that although Independant didn
t survive, he helped to start another successfull company. The more you think about the past, the more memories keep comming back.

Hello Craig
Next time you see him, shake his hand and pass on my best wishes if you would. He might not remember me but Colin Bishop is the name & I drove nights out of TNTs Bristol depot for years. I used to have a great crack with the boys there & Graham was the life and soul of the party without a doubt. Ask him about the day someone messing around on the phone sent a driver off to a depot to pick up a trailer. It was him on the phone & me who managed to get out of the hub Solo. Everyone believed the daft bugger on the phone it was so funny. There’s so many names from the past going over in my mind, it was a privelege to work with them believe me.

iirc did he not get in to some bother with TNT over certain alleged not quite scrupulous activities ? during his time at IPEC
