Aren’t you also supposed to secure the items to the floor of the
trailer using more than their own weight
.
To be honest, I’m not sure. I don’t do curtains.
VOSA are responding to a “rumour” that straps coming
from the roof of a curtain sider cannot be used to secure loads.
THAT IS DEFINATELY FALSE.
VOSA are saying that roof straps CAN be used for
pallets NOT MORE than 400 kilos.
But you can no longer put pallets in a curtain sider and expect the curtain
to secure the load. IN MANY CASES YOU WILL BE FINED FOR THAT
AND PREVENTED FROM MOVING.
As I understand it, I would put one ratchet strap across and
over every two pallets and fix them to the trailer bed. I would
need 15 straps for a full load because I would also put two
criss-crossed straps across the two rear pallets. (To stop backward movement)
All straps are rated with tonnage labels so if I had 2 x 1 tonne pallets to
secure, then I would use a 4 tonne strap. (Double the weight)
.
Wot a loada bollox.
.
Ok superhero, explain this one to me. 26 pallets of coke averaging 1 tonne per pallet. How will you secure these pallets to the trailer over the headboard where there is no chassis to strap to and over the axles where surely a H&S issue could arise?
The internal straps are redundant because they are only good for up to 400kg. The rave is no good because that too is only suitable up to a certain weight so how do the experts at Vosa advise strapping such a load to a vehicle and could they show a video or photos of such a strapped load please?
24 pallets of Coke, ‘Restrained’ using the internal straps. That’s the best I can do, can’t use ratchet straps because they will crush the pallets (hav’nt got any corner boards)
Lots of ‘So Called Professional Drivers’ take the Pee out of me because I strap or ratchet strap 99% of my loads !
I’ve said this before, the companies that send these pallets out should have a responsibility to shrink wrap in corner protectors if there going out on a curtainsider and at the same time haulage companies need to start buying euro spec trailers with side boards, curtains with mesh reinforcement, hooks on the bed and holes in the rave… Big ask? Well not really as its certainly common practice across europe and certainly in Germany…

Good work.
Let them take the pizz - you’ll have the last laugh.
Question for Dieseldoforme . What is the LEGAL definition of an insecure load or part of a load referring to road transport and can you show where to find this …

.
From memory it’s part of the Road Traffic Act 1991.
vosa can not, I repeat CAN NOT fine you for strapping any load with internal straps only.
if you get pulled and you’ve internally strapped your load all they can do is advise you how to strap the load with rachets without damaging the goods.
you can’t rachet 50% of goods that we carry that is why internal straps are fitted.

I don’t think Dieseldoforme actually knows any answers. He merely quotes text from documents that he reads. He has failed to answer any direct question totally and personally I don’t think he has a clue what a lorry actually looks like and if asked to secure a load he would put on a condom.
Please advise how to secure the load below with 26 internal straps. Complain about the load and you will simply not work there again.
Again, use all the internal straps but they will not stop the load from going forwards when you hit the brakes hard and as the load moves forward it comes away from the straps. The straps are merely there to make it look pretty and make Vosa believe that the driver has secured his load.

the only way of strapping that is in front of the goods on each pallet to reduce the risk of forward movement
billybigrig:
that’s the bees knees there. When I worked in a warehouse many moons ago and later when I started driving 30 odd moons ago Proctor & Gamble would use a cardboard filler that would fit between the empty spaces on the pallet.

I suggest that you do complain - many firms would like to see the back of you, you
winjin git, like DHL and Lynx when you were a winjin parcel boy.

So if I load 26 pallets into a curtainsider in Portsmouth, pull my frilly curtains halfway across the side windows ,switch on my fog lights , think of the children , then fire up the V8 and drive North to Cairnryan and get pulled at Caste Kennedy weighbridge by Vosa - they look inside and tell me I have an insecure load . Really - I’ve just driven 8 hours up the road and the load hasn’t moved on what grounds do they have to take me to court?

In that 8 hours have you had to take any evasive action which may have caused said load to shift?
Or are you telling us you know all the places where the child runs out in the road,or you quickly have to change lanes, or you may need to anchor on pretty sharpish etc
