Britain’s oldest lorry driver

Legend

He was on the wireless one night several months ago.
Fair play like!

Horses for courses, different strokes and all that.

I’d like to think he’s doing it because he wants to, not because he has to.

he’s too old to be safe behind the wheel surely?

If he…

Wasn’t driving an Iveco, he’d look 30 years younger.

“Brian Wilson with his mother Gertrude in front of a lorry which he began driving seven decades ago in 1953”

I’d be fascinated to know how he started driving a 1971 lorry in 1953. :stuck_out_tongue:

:open_mouth:
Why?
Just WHY?

I reckon the dozy one will end up working until his 90’s & still be stressing if he doesn’t get 84hrs a week.

Daily Fail strikes again! Did you like the headline, he has to pass a driving test every year?!

Fair play to him and all that and I don’t like being morbid but surely the odds of him passing away behind the wheel are unpleasantly high?

I know it could happen to anyone and I’d hate to discriminate unnecessarily but should he really be in charge of 44 tonnes?

Funny but that’s the first I have ever heard about needing to retake your driving test yearly even for a HGV. Yearly medicals yes.

I would say that’s usual bad tabloid reporting unless anyone can provide a link to the fact. With a quick Google I cannot find anything that says over 70 you have to retake your HGV test yearly let alone a car test.

At his age his reflexes will be a lot slower no doubt about that, let alone possible health issues and eyesight issues. The simple answer is no one should be driving a truck at that age, and lots should not even be driving cars in their old age sadly. There is a reason why you get an insurance price hike when you are over 70 years old, as you are deemed less safe due to age related reasons.

I sincerely hope I can make the decision to hang even my car keys up when the times comes for myself, I hope no one else has to make me choose that decision. I’m not saying it is easy to give up your independence of bring able to drive. But as I said I hope I can recognise when it’s time to stop for my safety and the safety of others.

I wonder if they will still make Ginsters pastys in 30 years time?

I doubt it, he’s more likely to die behind the wheel.
probably a heart attack due to stress and be the richest man in the graveyard

All I’ve asked is ( mrs / girl know ) that I’m buried in my rovers kit , my coffin is draped in the flag I’ve carried round for decades in my lorries & goodnight blast out over the tannoy

Credit to the old chap for looking that healthy at 90 , I look similar 30 yrs younger , passing a medical at 90 , I think I’ll struggle at 61 , love to have a chat with him to find out the secrets of it all , health / looking so well ,
As for doing the job at that age , I struggle with straps / chains even pulling curtains at times now , so I won’t be working & to be fair I’d not want to at 90

There you go, the bar is so low to pass the driver medical. I’m now under the impression a pulse and seeing just further than your nose end will suffice. He probably paid his doctor £120 for the benefit of it too. I’d be surprised if his doctor wasn’t in hysterics whilst carrying out the medical.

‘Plus because of all the gas and electric bills going up, I need to keep working.’
