Credit to the old chap for looking that healthy at 90 , I look similar 30 yrs younger , passing a medical at 90 , I think I’ll struggle at 61 , love to have a chat with him to find out the secrets of it all , health / looking so well ,
As for doing the job at that age , I struggle with straps / chains even pulling curtains at times now , so I won’t be working & to be fair I’d not want to at 90

My guess would be his probable lack of ingestion of current ‘foodstuffs’ that he and his healthier generation probably would eschew (not available in the formative years).Guessing obviously but our ancestors were inherently much stronger due to decent food availability unlike the last few decades where big-macs are considered as actual food and even Greggs. The greater irony i’m increasingly discovering, having embarked on a rigorous fasting routine myself,is that when the body isn’t in constant ‘digesting-mode’ with snacks and such,a self-healing mechanism starts to activate called Autophagy and longer fasts 18/24 and the ‘biggie’ a 72 hour grueler, actually re-sets the immune system meaning new gut-flora growth (basis of immunity) and the body starts to…reject the old junk routine which is usually the catalyst in undermining most health conditions unique to this era.

We were designed to ‘starve and feast’ hunter/gatherer style it’s just that unatural carbs and sugars create the discomfort that manifests as ‘hunger’ which essentially is withdrawal from toxic foods hence the plethora of gastro-■■■■ billboards assailing the eye wherever you travel, particularly service stations. The weird and wonderul truth of the matter is once fully detoxed from crapola there’s a marked reluctance to load the shopping trolley with cakes, biscuits and other garbage because it’s no longer recognized as food and simpler, healthier fayre goes much further in satiating the bodies real nutritional requirements.

This gentleman should be lauded not pilliored, there’s far more health time-bombs ticking away behind commercial vehicle steering wheels these days.

Just perhaps he hasn’t been mugged off like you, drinking pop and eating pasties in lay-bys after 15 hours

Speaking of fasting ^^^^^^^ about a year ago i decided that on Tuesdays and Thursdays that the only thing to pass my lips would be water (I actually cheat and have one cup of coffee first thing otherwise life would be unbearable) and MY GOD what a difference it makes! I’m much more awake and alert on my fasting days and my quality of sleep on the fasting nights is amazing. We are designed to go to bed hungry, try it sometime it’s amazing.

Indeed. It’s all about graduality, push 12 hour periods to a 16…a 16 to 18 and if doing it for health reasons 36 and the ‘golden one’ at 72 hours.Dr Mindy Pelz on youtube is my default source of info and there’s a lot of foundational knowledge needed to do it properly but those ‘Stem-Cells’ that work as the repair crew need a lot of coaxing to activate, they diminish with age but i’m hearing incredible tales locally of even diabetes being reversed and paradoxically it gets easier with longer fasts as the body gets disinclined to process junk food.Dieting is futile, you need to be healthy to lose weight not the reverse…it happens anyway.I’ve gone 13 stone to 10 over 2 years.Nice seeing a little abs definition but it wasn’t the ‘main aim’ sort of thing.

Yeah. More detail needed, otherwise that might be like not drinking alcohol on two days, and having 6 pints on the other 5… :grimacing:

What do you eat/drink on the other days? Genuine question, as I’ve started to give the diet a bit more thought lately. I’ve stopped adding sugar to my tea and coffee (I only had a little anyway) , and I’m cutting right back on salt. I’m also cutting right back on processed food, it’s mainly fat and sugars, with very little nutritional value.

That wont be me,as soon as Im 65,thats it,Im done.
Have you heard all those stories of drivers retiring and then dead within 12 months ,because it was such a shock to the system?
I wonder if the statistics back up this theory…

I reckon the dozy one will end up working until his 90’s & still be stressing if he doesn’t get 84hrs a week.

I doubt it, he’s more likely to die behind the wheel.
probably a heart attack due to stress and be the richest man in the graveyard

Well done for spoiling a lovely story about the old chap
For your information , my will states all money / property goes to my mrs / girl

Never ever did I think the topic of fasting would come up on this forum! :open_mouth: Literally just came off the back of a 72 hour water fast last week after two years of regular intermittent fasting. What a feeling, incredible amounts of energy and mental clarity, plus the added bonus of weight loss, mostly fat with maybe a small amount of muscle. Not sure I could have done it sat at home, have to keep your mind busy but a low carb diet + fasting is the way to go IMO!

As you well know my friend it’s extremely difficult as a 5/6 day tramper to eat healthily so I try to look at the salt and fat content of anything I buy to eat. Anything over 4% fat I try to avoid. I don’t do crisps or biscuits as a rule and I try to avoid processed foods. My treat once a week is a full English breakfast, on other days I’ll have scrambled egg on unbuttered toast. I try to avoid eating after 6pm as there is little nutritional value in food after that time. Of course if the lunatic Robroy collars me that all goes out of the window :imp:.

Someone once told me that you should eat breakfast like a King, lunch like a Prince and supper like a pauper. That is extremely good advice IMO.

Try the 24hour fasting ND, once you get used to it you’ll be amazed at the benefits it brings.

You’ll need to put a mugshot up doze for us to decide your ‘poll age’ ie how old everybody thinks you look.
If you look like that at 61 the job has deffo took it’s toll mate, no offence.

Don’t know about his planner,…but if that’s his Mrs I aint surprised he looks like that.

Talk about ageism! Geez! I’ve seen 40 year olds behind the wheel that look like a heart attack about to happen!
My father is in his 80’s and still drives his large camper van all around Europe. He’s perfectly capable, and far less risk to other road users than an awful lot of the idiots you see out there … Like the ■■■■ who overtook my lorry today in his range rover on a a blind bend. We see them every day … What makes a 90 year old lorry driver who’s been driving longer than most of us have lived ring alarm bells in comparison?

You are right about the idiiots, but making a comparison with a 90 year old is irrelevant, a 90 year old is as much a potential danger I reckon, no matter how good he thinks he may be.
At 90 you ain’t got the same reactions or faculties, surely you ain’t going to argue with that.
My Dad is 85 and looks 20 years younger…and an ex truck driver, but I’ve noticed whilst travelling with him I don’t feel as safe as I always used to with him…it’s just part of nature , slowing down.

I would have a maximum driving age for cars,.and certainly one for a 44 tonne truck, more like 75,.and even that would be too old for some.

Farmer Don who I rent my mooring from is 97 and he’s out every day slinging bales of hay around, chopping wood with an axe, driving around on his tractor. Doesn’t even need glasses to drive his Land Rover.

ATJT:
should he really be in charge of 44 tonnes?

About half the drivers I see out there shouldn’t be in charge of 44 tons!

I think its a problem for companies too that when drivers are very old and if they have health problems and having to have operations etc, they spend half the time on sick pay.I think they have a cut off at say ,65 and then after that,is it reasonable to expect sick pay or redundancy,if thats on the table.I would make 65 the retitement age.I dont want to go past that on trucks, bad enough I spent my whole life behind the wheel,I could have done something better than that,if only I had applied myself more and wasted the oppurtunities I could have had.

Sploom:

yes,i’ve heard that story over the years.an old mate of mine, retired aged 65 Christmas before last…died at home 13 weeks later
