If only……

… there was a system in place to warn lorry drivers about low bridges ahead.

Haven’t a minute to live, no time for sign reading.

Gave up trying to watch. To many pop-up and stupid “verify your not a robot” windows…

Where is this please?..

So before everyone blames the driver it’s not always their fault. Here’s one that caught me out.

So lets say you’re heading up the A1 pulling a double decker and you’re going to go to Retford…

A1 Northbound exit for Retford at Ranby.

At the end of the sliproad…

Then when you turn left you finally get to see

tinyurl.com/bdd6p5dw

So no warning of the low bridge until you’ve turned left. And when I found that out that little sign didn’t exist and the first I knew about it was when I got to the bridge where fortunately I was paying attention because the sign is actually on the railings at the top of the bridge where you’re unlikely to notice it and have next to no chance of seeing it at night.

I ended up in the middle of morning rush hour having to reverse back past the junction so I could rejoin the A1 north.

When I contacted the Highways Agency about that they said it was the council’s job to sort out the signage, the council said it was the Highways Agency.

The small sign you only get to see once you’ve turned left assuming the tree hasn’t grown over it has only just recently been put up but there’s still no advanced warning until you’ve got to the junction where your only choice is to turn left or right onto that road then reverse back past the junction so you can return back to the A1.

Ok Conor good points, but as far as I can see in the pic it was hit in daylight.
Bridges were always drummed into my brain at training level, to the point of now as a truck driver, where I even notice the heights (or the bridge  ) when I drive my car, …as I’m sure you do.
Down to driver end of…

And what about these ■■■■ 400 quid sat navs they all use these days, never used one myself, but afaik they include bridge warnings. :unamused:

The first warning of a low bridge - really needs to be a triangle miles ahead at the mouth of the road that leads miles later to the low bridge…

Trouble is, a lot of these triangle signs - get taken down during road works, building jobs, and anything else that might result in the sign being “moved”, only to end up “not being replaced”.

Winseer:

No, some bridges require triangle warning signs, eg arched bridges: These warn you should not pass if you’re too tall; others require circular prohibitory signs eg flat soffitt and skewed bridges, these warn you must not pass. Simply passing a circular sign without hitting a bridge is worth a fine and three points (contravening a road sign)

I’ve got an - as was at the time - top spec TT6250, never sent me down a road towards a too low bridge. However, having a sat nav that does the job is only half the battle, some drivers just ignore warnings, thinking “it’ll be alright…”

Standard penalty for a bridge strike these days is a PI for the company and a DCH or the driver, with an HGV-entitlement suspension up to six months being common now.

You can get a 14’9" under a 14’6" bridge. Only it won’t still look as new as when you left the yard.
The motorway was closed and he was rushing to get parked up before running out of hours. Apparently it happens every time they close the motorway.

Some times the re routing on nights causes it,cheap sat navs can fail to alert drivers. But mostly it’s the tired over worked mind.
It’s my biggest fear tbh.

Never…

Be afraid to stop the job, get out of the cab and calmly explain to the vehicle behind you why it’s all gone to rats and you need to reverse back (however far that may be).

You’re welcome

Nah no excuse,.we all get tired,.and if you are (literally) overworked it is your fault for going along with it.
It is up to YOU the DRIVER to check these routes first then maybe eh?
That is why those who have their heads screwed on use a sat nav purely as a guide.
Maybe there should be some law for drivers to carry a low bridge marker map then eh?

My sat nav is a cheap Car one (I’m sure I’ve already mentioned it  ) so any route I ain’t familiar with or any diversion that comes up, it takes me 2 minutes to consult it.
Old fashioned yep, …but 100% effective when you consider how many low bridges I have hit. :bulb:

There appears to be low bridges un-marked, as happened to me, I took a wrong turn and ended up having to reverse, with the help of a kind car driver…

Turning left you come across this bridge…

Shrek:
HGV Alliance Low Bridges, Truck Stops, Weighbridge Directory – Google My Maps

You’re welcome

That’s excellent, it’s got all the correct measurements of the ones near me that I can remember. So, 2 things, how do you save it (without coming back to your post) and can you use it for routing (like using Google maps normally?)

Try the A237 at Wallington railway station near Crawly, no signs except for the little 16ft sign as you get to the point of no return, not a road for turning round in or indeed ,I suspect, for 20 hours of the day one you can reverse away from with it being London.
I’m told some deckers are up to 16ft 2 these days……
