It’s not the job that’s rubbish but some firms make it rubbish…
Get a good firm a good truck and a good gaffer who pays a fair wage & leaves you alone to do the job then it’s one of the best jobs ever.
Nail on head mate, and when you are forced to leave that sort of job through in my case ceased trading, and redundancy, and you have to resort to a crap or average one, (or in my case best of an average bunch in my area) that is when the moaning and discontentment starts.
I’ve managed to get a decent number within the co, so tbh I aint too bad at the moment.
When I look back at a certain couple of jobs I have had in last 20 years, I did not know when I was well off…or rather I did.
It’s ok for some to say ‘‘leave, go somewhere else’’ but most firms in my area pay the similar only half decent wage.
That is why in fact, most of my previous jobs were as an outbased driver for a firm in Essex, and a couple of European ones…although one of the Euro ones was also crap

I’ve had people since I started saying give it long enough and you’ll hate it. Well, 20 years later I still love it, it may not be best for pay and conditions but sitting in your own climate controlled environment listening to Radio all day takes enjoying the scenery some beating
It’s alright for you Luke, you’ve got Bertie to keep you company, and entertain you with his witticisms!
BTW, when’s your next video out? My lad is having withdrawal symptoms!!!
As some have already stated, I’d say it’s crap firms rather than the job. I’ve only been doing it 10 years but still love it, been with same company since I started out, fairly cushy, couple of nights out a month and treat like a human. A couple of months ago I fancied a change, got another job where I was promised this that and the other at the interview then ended up being run ragged and being told things like I need to be in Dewsbury for 8am after parking up in Ipswich at 9pm then being told “do what you need too do” and no parking reimbursed. I actually saw why some lads say the jobs rubbish, needless to say a week and half later I got my old job back and back to enjoying it again!

You were lucky somebody didn’t jump in mate, and you ended up being stuck with that crew.
.(…‘‘Do what you need to do’’ , ‘‘Yeh ok, fair enough mate, I’ll take my 11 off and re start’’ . Phone put down and knocked off for 11 hours.)
I hate those type of tossers, not telling you in as many words so their arses are covered, but implying and expecting you to run bent.

And you will be surprised how many drivers old and new do break the rules to get the load there on time,
“Yes men” are a blight on this job

And so am I
Well yes there is that! We have many a long intellectual chat while driving. Its great to have someone on my level to talk to

Yeh we all have those guys to endure mate, not so much rule breakers in our case, more teararse out to impress heroes.
I just sit back and laugh at them while I get on with my own job …and get paid the same rate as them.
Boxlife77:
Never understood the guys who constantly say how rubbish the pay/conditions are. Nobody has a gun to their head, more than welcome to go and get a job in a warehouse or Tesco or wherever they think is a better job [emoji38]
They would not last in a warehouse they’d have to physically do some work and get paid £7.20ph
I love it and wouldnt want to do anything else, mind you, i just do groupage/ singular loads from one place to another and the tilts are already loaded so no grief to speak of and apart from northern France in the winter generally have warm climes to work in .Id never work for an employer ever again…just lining someone elses pockets…
The hardest work of all from my point of view is “Boredom”.
I’d rather be run ragged, than have to drive from place to place waiting for hours and hours to get tipped, and all during that time I am “Not free to dispose of my time as I see fit”, because of course, officially - it’s classed as “on duty” time.
Sitting in a cooler somewhere is the most boring thing of all of course.
Doing it in a flat 8 hour shift for say, 3 hours - makes that shift seem like a 15 hour one, where at least I’m busy all shift long.

Don’t ever get a job carting tarmac then, many days we did more waiting than actual driving. Stick it on break for a few hours and either get your head down or read a good book, tell the gang to give you knock when they are ready haha!

Don’t entertain boxes then on my 2nd long tip of the day 3 & 3 quarter hrs at Toy R Us Coventry first thing, now been in Rugby since 12, and I reckon it’ll be another couple of hours yet. As it was still dark at 6 am when I arrived at Coventry, I got on the bed and had an hours further kip, well I did start at 5am when I left there I went to Hinckley were we have a yard for stand trailers picked up this Rugby trailer, stopped and had a bacon roll enroute to Rugby, once I got here and on the bay I cleaned the inside of the cab, been for an hours walk, had a brew and got on here not the most arduous of jobs is it
They’re only doing this, because last week I was on my way home at 1115 Friday morning out of driving hours for the fortnight, The week before I’d caned the hours in, including doing a Saturday, and didn’t let on til mid way through Thursday that I was short, to late to be given long tips with little driving all week
Its all a game
PS I just checked, I booked on at 5am, and now at near as dammit 3pm I’ve caned in 1hr 53minutes driving for the day
I never tire of sitting around doing nothing and getting paid for it. Apparently the latest social media craze is “the mannequin challenge”, pah, I’ve been perfecting that for years!

Pete.
yes and find they’ve let a few trucks behind you tip first whilst you were snoozing
My best job was working for an owner operator on here…Event work throughout Europe and UK. It was the easiest job I’ve had or will ever have. Wished I’d never left him TBH.
Winseer:
Thanks - I’d rather stay in my cab, but that’s not allowed for delivery drivers to Tescos alas…
The worst waiting room in my experience was “The Cooler” at Didcot, being run by nobby dressingtables at that time.
I was supposed to be evicted from the cab, but I left my passenger door open, snuk back in, and drew my curtains…
No go though.
Yard Marshall guy catches me minutes later, and warns me that I’ll be banned from site if I dare try such a thing to circumvent H&S rules again!
F… That place. If I never go back there again - it’ll be too soon.
The ■■■■ you lot have to put up with in the UK
I take the view its my truck and ill do whatever i please with it and if that includes sitting in it waiting to be tipped so be it. The things i read on here its like ■■■■ germany at RDC’s it seems, whatever is the matter with some of these little hitlers■■?

That’s a bit of an oxymoron, social media ie interaction, yet “the mannequin challenge” must be exact opposite
Drivers love a moan no more than a forkie moans or a factory worker whether the moaning is justified or not its what gets some people through the day… I’ve learnt to just try and have a laugh about things safe in the knowledge that eventually I will get home and forget all about it but I’ve worked with others who seem to thrive on ■■■■ stirring and moaning but don’t say a word when sat in front of the manager

Don’t worry - I wouldn’t dare! Don’t you get lumbered with “day cabs” in this line of work as well?
I’m not one for being able to “get my head down” in some contorted position, not with my back at my age.
